Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has been indicted on two misdemeanor traffic charges in Tennessee after an accident that seriously injured another driver.

District Attorney Kim Helper says Haynesworth faces charges of reckless driving and having expired registration.

Haynesworth, a former Tennessee Titan who signed with the Redskins last month, was released after surrendering Wednesday. Maximum punishment is six months in jail and a $500 fine on the reckless driving charge and 30 days and a $50 fine for the other charge.

The charges come from a Dec. 13 incident in which police say Haynesworth was trying to pass another driver, who crashed into a concrete median.

Haynesworth’s agent didn’t immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

The difference between careless and reckless behavior is substantial, and yet often blurred in traffic matters.
Could you elaborate? How is it often blurred? Are you saying he was possibly just careless but getting inappropriately charged with reckless? Or did you mean something else?

dude got tickets man, how is this even news? We get it. Football players are not special they're just like the rest of us.
Possible 6-7 month jail term is news for a guy someone just signed to a $100m contract.Though even with no real knowledge of the details of the case, I would doubt he gets the max. Just on the assumption he'll have a great lawyer.

I doubt he gets anything besides commy service...crap look at what Pacman has accomplised w/o spending a night in jail. Unless an NFL player shows up at the doorstep of a judges home with the head of their victim on a stake (either human or dog), these people are going to see no jail time...none. Non-story here IMO.

And so begins another Daniel Snyder team implosion....will be awesome seeing the Skins not win anything again this year after spending loads of $$.

dude, read the article, it happened in Tennessee. I'm sure the Redskins front office looked into things and knew about it prior to the signing.

It would sure be interesting if they did not do their due diligence on this one, or were wrong about their assumptions. If he goes to jail, there's a likely league suspension to follow.

And I am not a Redskins' hater, and I don't really care either way. Just seems kind of sketchy for this to come out now. When you sign a contract for 100 Million, your kinda the face of the organization. Well done skins!

I disagree or at least I wonder. If the full article from AP was posted, people would know that the guy he caused to lose control of his car now has a hip that needs to be replaced and cannot walk without the aid of a walker and sometimes uses a wheelchair.

Even if you excuse for a sec that some NFL folks don't remember the Gurode incident, every NFC East fan sure does.

So it's either-

How do you offer 100 mil to someone that stomped on a players face and recently did that

OR if they plead ignorance

How could you not research these things before offerring 100 mil?

It's shaping up to be a PR nightmare and making me wonder less why the Titans didn't offer a truckload of $ for him to stay.

Another thing(which I heard on radio but...good point) if this gets in front of a jury or judge, there is no way he is getting off easy when they see this man unable to walk. If you had to answer as to why we have reckless driving laws, wouldn't you come up with something like to stop this from happenning? His lawyer has to plead and get this over with as quick as possible.

Sounds like he got off easy, but what else is new? Dude is a turd, always has been, always will be. He will win football games for the Redskins, as long as he isn't in jail, but the Hogs can have him...

Bump.

Haynesworth Pleads No Contest

Washington Redskins DT Albert Haynesworth pleaded no contest this morning to reckless driving, a Class B misdemeanor, and was given a three-month suspended sentence, according to Terry Wood, assistant district attorney of the 21st judicial district in Tennessee.

Haynesworth will be under three months' supervised probation, will make a $5,000 donation to a charity and must also complete 25 hours of community service and an eight-hour defensive driving class.

The charges stem from a December accident in which another passenger was seriously injured. The second count, driving with an expired registration, was dropped.

Haynesworth will make a donation to 119 Frontline, a charity that provides counseling for firefighters, police officers and first responders, according to Wood.

the idea that he'd spend as much as a day in jail is almost as much as a joke as a "suspended sentece" (translation: no sentence), or $5000 for a guy worth untold millions. yeah this is the same as any avg guy getting busted :wall:

Longtime Titan Fan and Nashville resident here (RIP Steve)

Let me give you a crystal ball look into WAS Week 1.

Hut-hike

"uh-oh Haynesworth is down...he's clutching his hamstring"

Bye Bye Snyder's Millions......

Glad TN resisted temptation to keep that very moody guy with a questionable work ethic.

Me too

I guess the Skins beat a lot of people's favorite teams in the 80s, early 90s, and they STILL hold a grudge. wow.

It may be more a case of anger at Haynesworth for leaving Tennessee.
and this is a bumped thread so some of that's worn off for some I'm sure.Fatness, let us know how much of a beast(compliment) you think he is in camp. Also, Fisher/Schwartz were able to scheme to funnel things right at him. Something alot of teams try to do but fail at. If you could let us know if they are pulling that off and/or working on that, I think that'd be interesting.

:bs: That isn't even possible. It's the way they write these laws up, so a newwriter gets sensational.

In the same way the following tickets: jaywalking, speeding 6 over, and littering in GA carry a maximum sentence of 1 year and 1,000 doallar fine. But you won't ever get that sentence.

This is a non issue. Dude will pay some fines (reckless will likely be reduced) and life will go on. Goddell won't get involved on this. next.

We're not talking about speeding tickets here. He seriously wrecked a dude's life by driving like an idiot.
This is a traffic accident. Just like any other. It just so happens to involve a high profile athlete and an injured party. That happens 100,000's of times every day in the US.

i'd like to know the details. how badly was the other guy injured? how wreckless was hayneworth being?i think people take this #### too lightly. i dont care who you are, if you drive like an idiot and someone is seriously injured, you should at a minimum lose your license to drive, and do serious jail time. this kinda stuff pisses me off. you see it every day. people driving too fast, angry, trying to pass, etc.... we take it for granted. driving is not a right. i see people on a daily basis who have NO business having a drivers license.

I'll at least be posting about it in the Redskins thread, as will a bunch of other regular Redskin fans. So far he's been at OTA's and the impression has been positive among coaches and players.Greg Blache, the defensive coordinator, has said he'll be changing some of the defense they've always run (which depended on linemen occupying positions so LB's could make plays) in order to give Haynesworth more opportunity to disrupt plays. Blache said this when Haynesworth was acquired, and has said it since then, as has Haynesworth. Haynesworth has also said that if he's occupying multiple blockers he'll be happy if other defensive players are making the plays. Other players have said they're impressed with his ability at OTA's.But none of that has been in a game.
