I'm a 3 hour movie lovin fool... I try, as best as I can, to respect the director and take the journey with him. Love auteurs, love 60's and 70's cinema... much more a cinephile than a TV guy though. And I LOVE Scorsese. I have seen all but three of his films.
All that said, just getting through this was a chore. This is the worst thing of his I've seen since New York, New York. I couldn't believe he directed it. Checked my DVR an hour in thinking we had to be winding down and there was still an hour left.
Canavale, the sum of the parts is less than the whole. He's got the look, he's got the chops, but... meh. Television is fundamentally a medium where you say, I want to spend time with these people, love or hate. But as the old saying goes, they are not opposites, and the true opposite of love is indifference. I really just didn't care what happened to anyone after investing two hours.
EXCEPT for the Dice man. Who was definitely chewing scenery and I'm a fan of his but he at least brought some stakes to this show.
And I know they're pals but using Dietl for anything more than a line or two is asking too much of what he can do.
The other actors ranged from mediocre to terrible. Juno Temple was ok. But a bit of a derritivie character. There was a scene where the A and R guy with the beard was on the phone in his office losing his mind. Classic steadicam/spider dolly shot circling and the guy is just absolutely awful. Really all the A and R guys in no way delivered any authetnticity nor did Romano, the lawyer and the other partner. My god the A and R guy who was asking for favors from Juno Temple?
Also don't like the device of mixing real and fictional acts. But if you are, get it right. Plant was awful.
