HBO - Song of Ice&Fire Series -Varsity Thread - no TV only whiners (1 Viewer)

#####ing about the screen shots is over the line. What...someone who doesn't read the book brings that to the table and its fine....but a book reader brings it up...all of a sudden it's "book knowledge" and wrong? Whining by people who don't understand what the definition of spoiler is.
Yes, it's fine for a non-book reader to point out that stuff on the screencaps. No, it's not fine for a book reader to do it. Why? Because the non-book reader might be wrong. By pointing out something like that, you're telling them "I know what's going to happen, and I know that this is significant." You're giving them knowledge about the show that hasn't been revealed yet.

A non-book reader might notice the missing stone in the necklace, sure. They also might notice the birds in the pie, or the way Sansa held the cup, or whatever other crazy #### they've been coming up with. And if they post it, the other non-book readers don't know if it means anything, or if it's just more crazy #### that someone cape up with.

come on. 0 chance somebody without previous knowledge of how poison got in the cup (jewel) puts those screen shots together and we all know it. I could see shots of the main suspects during that scene, but not tying dontos and necklace into it. I knew what was coming and still barely noticed something was missing from the necklace.
Disagree. Television is linear; with maybe the worst aspects of these shows being that they spoonfeed you what's important by the "previously on" at the beginning of each show. Some guy (Dontos) you've seen once gives a main character a necklace with a bull #### excuse "that his family name shine one more time" and then is seen pulling said main character away after The King dies......and that's no suspicious? Come on.....if there were no book and people didn't know....that entire wedding would have been dissected more than the Zapruder Film. It was done that way in The Walking Dead forum when book readers and non book readers didn't know what was going on.

If one is so worried about being spoiled by even the most minute of details....then why would ANYONE bother to even read the opinions and theories of anyone, book or non book reader? Isn't ANY theory spoiling things for people?

I guess we agree to disagree.

people were talking about dontos, sure. I stick to my opinion that it is a huge leap to think the average viewer would focus on the necklace AND notice a missing jewel AND think that jewel was the poison.

this isn't a small detail- it is telling them who is behind killing the king. like I posted before it robs them of a big "oh ####" moment I had while reading that book.

Why is anyone from this thread posting in there at all? If you guys want to discuss stuff about the show, let's discuss it in here.

If you want to watch a show based on a hugely popular book series and then spend time on the internet talking about it, you shouldn't get worked up or surprised when minor details, which may or may not even apply in the TV series get discussed, is all I'm saying.
Agreed. If they really want a place to discuss it without the book readers spoiling anything, they should start their own thread. Put something like "tv only, books don't exist" in the title.
That's totally fine, and I have no intention on posting there. I just think it's a bit much to expect that degree of insulation and then get worked up when you don't get it. Totally different if you're talking about major plot points, but by and large I haven't seen much of that and didn't think today got there. At least before Fly just started messing with them, which clearly got out of hand.
FWIW nothing I said was a spoiler. Everything after The Clink Heard Around the World was utter nonsense. I posted random pages, ridiculous inventions, outright lies, etc. None of it was remotely a spoiler. I'm not the uber bad guy they wanted me to be.

Because you go in there to see what the people there are thinking...someone asks a non important question....it gets answered and they get all pissy. Then they cry like ladies.

Those questions aren't for you. Just leave it alone. Pretty friggin please.

The redditor who whomever that took the screen caps and captioned them probably read the books and was looking for that specifically. I don't think normal sleuthing brings one to think that a jewel on a necklace could have poison on it, so let's look for a missing jewel on Sansa by zooming in on her upper shoulder area.

I disagree. It's evident in The Walking Dead forum where there were close up screen shots of the alleged human bones in Terminus. GoT is a water cooler show that gets popped on Good Morning America.......while admittedly it is easier to find something in the show based on the books...I have no doubt there are non book enthusiasts that have Zaprudered the hell out of that.

I was b/c I had read some of the books, but you guys were discussing stuff I was not up to yet. I still get spoiled with stuff in here because even though I read them, I guess I don't remember much of books 4 and 5. I am sure there are others that don't fit in the camp of wanting 0 to do with the books and have read all the books. still, there is stuff that doesn't need to be posted over there.

And like I said before...it doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to realize that Dontos is involved in this plot with the only significant thing happening with him prior to the wedding being him giving Sansa a necklace. With us knowing that Sansa isn't involved....you really think it's a stretch to think that she inadvertantly smuggled the weapon in?

And I'm not even really defending any screenshot spoiler right now....I'm more interested in how people couldn't think the Tyrells weren't involved....

Just remember this everyone, and we can all get along -

The other thread is committed to the "normal sleuthing" standard. If you are an abnormal or suspiciously good sleuth, you're just going to doosh up their little germ free island.

Are we done with this now? Alrighty then.

Well said and Thank You for brining some reason and sanity to these threads.

how in world can you do any "sluething" if you know what is happening. a real mental exercise there.

Sorry for the typos. My phone battery died right as I posted that.

For book readers the hairnet was suspicious given the amount of time spent on its description and Thorns looking at it etc. with just detailed descriptions. The show you have Dontos give her a necklace. You have thorns talk to her but nothing out of the ordinary for an old lady to do by touching her. Book readers of course were giddy to see it go down that way. Normal people watching though would think nothing of it and certainly no reasonable person assumes that a necklace has poison on it. And it's not really noticeable without zooming in and paying careful attention that there's a missing jewel in an obscure area. So somebody posting that with captions and such specificity is a pretty big spoiler for watchers, even if it's not a big one in the grand scheme of the story.

I am reader hear me roar

In numbers too big to ignore

and I know too much to go back and pretend

'Cause I've heard it all before

And I've been down there on the floor

No one's ever going to keep me down again

Whoa yes I am wise

But it's wisdom born of pain

Yes I've paid the price

But look how much I gained

If I have to, I can do anything

I am strong, STRONG

I am invincible, INVINCIBLE

I am reader

You can bend but never break me

'Cause it only serves to make me

More determined to achieve my final goal

And I'll come back even stronger

Not a novice any longer

'Cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul

Whoa yes I am wise

But it's wisdom born of pain

Yes I've paid the price

But look how much I gained

If I have to, I can do anything

I am strong, STRONG

I am invincible, INVINCIBLE

I am reader

I am reader watch me grow

See me standing toe to toe

As I spreading my loving arms across the land

But I'm still an embryo

With a long, long way to go

Until I make my brother understand

Whoa yes I am wise

But it's wisdom born of pain

Yes I've paid the price

But look how much I gained

If I have to, I can do anything

I am strong, STRONG

I am invincible, INVINCIBLE

I am reader

I am reader

I am reader

I am reeeeeader

ETA: Whoops, wrong thread. Mods please hard move this post.

One of the weird things I always wondered about is why Tywin never comments to anyone about Cersei and Jaimee's rumored relationship. Or maybe I'm just not recalling it. He must have known. That guy knows almost everything when he's at King's Landing. Yet not a word. Not even a passing remark, to my memory.
I think there are at least a handful of scenes in the show where the topic comes up around him, though I'm not sure if they happen in the books that way off hand. Charles Dance plays those scenes completely cold, leaving you with the impression that he's aware it's happening. You can infer that he also understands the consequence of that ever being acknowledged would destroy his legacy, leaving him with no real options other than to keep ignoring it.

I'm not so sure Tywin really cares...the Targaryans were known for such things.

BTW, Charles Dance is probably the perfect actor to cast as Tywin. He IS Tywin, the look, the mannerisms, it's a near perfect portrayal. After Dinkage, he's the best GOT actor IMO.

Agreed.

ETA: Tywin is the epitome of the Machiavellian prince.

Question: What does Littlefinger gain from assassinating Joffery?

Is it just the perversity of forcing Sansa (a younger model Cat) to flee with him for fear of her life?

I think he's enjoying forcing her to do that, but that;s just a fun little side effect of his grand scheme. Dude is probably the smartest character in the book. no idea what he's got planned. I was actually happy when he killed Lady Arryn. She was annoying

We don't know Littlefinger's motivations yet, honestly. Remember he told Sansa (during their trip from KL to the Eyrie) that sometimes he'll do something out of nowhere just to catch people off guard.

That's the crux of the book....Littlefinger versus Varys. The entire realm is being manipulated by two mooks and none of these royals realize it. We know what Varys wants...we don't have a clue as to what L-Fingah wants. It might be just to pork a young Sansa.....but I think he wants more.

I like Tywin. I think he's a stand up guy.

"Who killed Joffrey" is not the most minute of details.

We know what Varys wants...we don't have a clue as to what L-Fingah wants.
Weird, I see it exactly the opposite way. Littlefinger is pretty clear about what he wants: power. The man is pure, naked ambition. It's Vary's that I'm more unsure of - although I don't believe for a second that he only wants to "serve the realm", no matter how many times he repeats it.

He wants to rule - he wants to become king - or at least the greatest/most powerful Lord. We know he is already preparing for Daenerys to come to Westeros (he got a bunch of Targaryen tapestries from King's Landing to impress her).

Littlefinger gains chaos from assassinating Joffrey. The more the realm is in turmoil the more the status quo can be changed. Killing Jon Arryn and then implicating Tyrion has brought about the fall of House Baratheon, Tully, Stark, Arryn, and now Lannister isn't looking all that great either. Littlefinger went from the lowest Lord to ruling the Riverlands *and* the Vale.

I am convinced that he is the one that planted the seed that Joffrey should take Ned Stark's head. I am also pretty certain that he is the one that placed the Faceless man in the dungeon (to kill Ned in the Black Cells or on the road to The Wall if Joffrey didn't go through with it or was stopped).

Yeah, Illyrio and Varys are much harder to read than Littlefinger as to what they want. What does Varys gain from helping Aegon or Daenerys take the throne? Viserys promised Illyrio something - but that doesn't mean Dany will agree to it. Who knows if Aegon is a Targaryen or if he and Daenerys will even get along. I would think a war between the two Targaryens would be just as likely as peace.

Can't Varys and Illyrio be seen as House Targ loyalists? i.e. putting the Targs back on the throne is the goal, and not the means to an end?

Good stuff here.I also think that Littlefinger knows that keeping Cersei in a position of power will also create chaos. She nearly brings the entire House Lannister down herself.
