Just got the books in the mail and dug in last night. Really enjoying how they're written from the perspective of different characters. Hopefully that will be interesting enough to keep me reading thru books 1 & 2. I just wan tto look at SoS to see what happens next

There is quite a bit of Tyrion and a similar amount of Arya. Much of ADWD happens concurrently with events from AFFC.

Re-reading book 2 now that the season is over. One of the things that is amusing to me is quotes that are said by one character in the book that are used by a different one in the show. Even when both scenes involved are represented in the show.

Not because I didn't "like" Robb or Cat but because IT BROKE UP THE MONOTONY OF THE SEEMINGLY ENDLESS AND MULTIPLE STORY LINES OF PEOPLE TRAVELING! Good god. Bran's going here, Arya's going here (oops, no she's not), Jon's going here, Sam's going here etc. After a while they all just blended together into one long and bloody road trip.

Even the epilogue was great! From front to back this was the best book I've read. I'm still shocked of how conniving Petyr is and I hope he has a POV chapter in the next book!

One of the great exchanges in the book 'A Game of Thrones' is when Bran asks Ned after the beheading of the deserter "Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?" and Ned tells him "That's the only time a man can be brave." They put this in the show as almost a throw-away recollection by Rob. I really didn't understand that decision, it really diminished the impact of it I thought.

Still reading book 5 - its amazing just how quickly the lives of the major players have been completely turned upside down since the beginning of the series, when presumably they were all living large.
Starks - all dead or spiraling away from Winterfel
Lannisters - dead, or falling from grace quickly - Jamie gone from villain to redeeming character
Barratheons - dead and/or defeated, Stannis has a chance at redemption
Targaryen - she is the only one whose life is arguably better now than when she started,
I would read a whole book about Arya's life, and the Faceless men. (in fact I read the two chapters in book 5 about her already)

Some Storm of Swords spoilers and question
I didnt read the first book in the series but after reading that it was Lysa who poisoned Jon Aryan and not the Lannisters I'm kind of confused. In the first book, do the Lannisters ever allude to the fact that they're wrongfully accused of killing him? From what I remember of the show in season 1, Jamie and Cersi seemed to (in a round about way) own up to killing him...

They didn't own up to killing him, though I think the intent was to create that impression with viewers. They are talking about the fact that he knew about their incestuous relationship and that "whatever he knew died with him", but they never say anything about killing him.

None taken.Before this series I only read non-fiction books. Not much excitment in those and this book had a lot of it...pretty much at the end of every chapter for the last 200-250 pages. Much like the show does, as soon as I finished a chapter I wanted that persons to be the next one and couldn't wait to read certain people's.

I'm halfway through the third book and just started watching the series (4 episodes so far). Its amazing to me how closely the series if following the book. You can't capture every aspect of the book in a TV series, but all the major parts and all (or almost all) of the dialogue is true to the book to an extent I have never seen before in a TV series.

Tyrion (the Imp) is great. Probably a bit too goodlooking and walks better than it appears he would have in the book, but he plays the part very, very well IMO.
I also enjoy the portrayal of Cersai and Jaime (a little thick on the conceit, but not surprising for the first three books)
House Stark:
Sansa's got potential hotness written all over her. I like the job the young actress is doing with Arya as well.
Dislikes:

I understand that for the male players it was honor this and honor that in the books and Ned was presented as uptight in the book, but I have found it difficult to get any form of attachment to these people as the acting is so dry. Catelyn. Wish they made her a bit younger/better looking. I know she's of an age in the book, but I personally envisioned her as more attactive and passionate than has been portrayed in the series.

Actually, only 2 of the Starks are dead. There are still 5 more around plus the 2 in the Nights Watch. I'm hoping that they will reunite to take back Winterfell.

Maisie Williams is getting pretty tall, which will look weird for book 3, but it'll be good for her story in Essos.

My theory on the future of Jon Snow
I apologize if this theory has already been floated, but I have recently reread the series and picked up a lot of things that I missed the first time through. I've also come to some interesting theories of what I think will be in store in the future books. The first one I'd like to discuss is "Is Jon Snow dead?"My first assumption is that Jon is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Making him Fire and Ice, part wolf, part dragon.My second assumption, or assertion, is that he is a warg. I think we know that for certain, although his skill at it is not refined, it seems to improve as the stories progress.At the start of DOTD, the epilogue is the story of what fate befalls Varamyr Sixskins. When I first read it, I thought "Who cares about what happened to that guy?" But, on rereading, it gives us much info on what it is to be a warg. Particularly, what happens to your "soul" as a warg when your human body dies. When a warg dies his final death, his "soul" jumps to a nearby life form and takes over that body. It happened with the wildling that Jon killed on the pass when he met Ygritte. That guy became the eagle that attacked Jon. It happend to Varamyr, who jumps to the body of one of his wolves.Ice dragons. What do we know about ice dragons? Little and less. But, throughout the stories, ice dragons are mentioned a few times, especially later on. There's a constellation of stars known as the Ice Dragon. And there are a few times that Jon mentions ice dragons in descriptions of things, usually the cold. I recall he was walking through the tunnel of the wall and he described it as being as cold as walking down the gullet of an ice dragon. And another time he described the wind and being as cold as the breath of an ice dragon from Old Nan's stories. So, I assume that there must have been ice dragons in the world at one time, and they were cold natured with cold breath.The Wall. What do we know of the Wall? Again, not a lot, particularly on HOW it was built. We know Bran the Builder built it, but how in the heck would you build a 600 ft tall wall that stretches for miles??? Perhaps if you had a flying beast whose breath could freeze things it could be done..... We do know that the Wall is powerful. It has spells and such built into it. Coldhands can't pass the wall. Melisandre tells Jon that the wall has power, and she seems to have her finger on the pulse of the magic realm.
That's the last we hear about Jon. Very interesting paragraph. "...the wound was smoking..." Where have we seen wounds smoking? Dany's dragons."He never felt the fourth knife. Only the cold..." Could that be because his "soul" has already made the jump? If so, where did it land? Ghost would be the most logical choice, but why would Ghost feel cold? When we last saw Ghost he was locked up in Jon's quarters to keep him from fighting with the warg's boar. So what would feel cold?My theory is that Jon's warg "soul" jumped and his Targaryen blood sensed an ice dragon that is frozen inside the wall and lead the "soul" there. That's why Jon feels cold.

Good idea. I had always taken the blue rose, Alyssa's favorite flower, as a hint that Jon was her son. But perhaps it could be the Jon as the Ice Dragon...

Actually, I'm not sure I agree with the specifics, but it's sort of the same thing that led me to look for something that was Stark + Stark = Jon. IMO Dany is all fire, Jon is all ice. And that wouldn't be true if it was R + L = J.

I have read those three. They were OK but I think the only one I have recommended is White Noise (and that was a long time ago). It seems you are more into the theme(s) that a book addresses and the story is somewhat secondary. I am more drawn to characters and world building. Out of curiosity - have you read Ender's Game? I have been trying to convince a friend of mine that teaches high school English to integrate it into her classes' reading list.
