HBO - Song of Ice&Fire Series -Varsity Thread - no TV only whiners (1 Viewer)

I don't mind the Theon stuff, but they are spending a little too much time on it. It's nice seeing what we didn't "see" in the books, but it's a bit much overall.

What bothers me about the Theon storyline isn't the concept, but the execution. Filling in the blanks between the POVs has been one of the most intriguing aspects of the show, but in this case, the choices seem very poor. Personally, I don't need to see the depths of his mutilation. Just let my imagination do the work in this case, particularly if the scenes add virtually nothing else of interest. Come back to it less often to make it less tiresome.

The Theon story line has been one of the better ones in the HBO version. In the show, we got his POV well before he became Reek so we had a more intimate look at his story arc. The gravity of his choices was something the book really didn't delve into (it was presumed - reading between the lines). Showing his descent this way makes sense to me. Also, it might make his attempt at redemption down the road a little more meaningful (Jeyne Poole, ect.). Essentially, the Show has created a pretty significant POV that never existed in the books (until Reek emerges).
I agree. They nailed with his admission that he wrong and that his father died at Kings Landing.
Yea, I don't get all the Theon hate. While I like reading the reviews and analysis over at Westeros.org, they really come off as whiny when complaining about Theon, Cat Stark, and any nudity/sex/love whatsoever.
It feels a little bit like a waste of time though, considering how much other stuff we're expecting them to deal with. In fact, much of last night's episode seemed like a waste of time, and most of the stuff that wasn't a waste of time wasn't very interesting. It would be awesome if Robb's wife is Tywin's agent though. They showed the first two words she'd written in that letter - anyone know what they were?
Last night did seem filler based on what they still have to do. But then I realize we got a whole other season for the rest of A Storm of Swords.

If you're going to read into it a bit....Theon obviously has a pretty role to play in the unwritten material left. HBO's not going to waste this much time on a guy who basically gets freed and then executed by Stannis in the 7th or 8th season.

The other nice thing about the show will be that it'll put to rest whether or not The Hound is still alive.

I would not be surprised. One of my favorite parts of the books is when Jamie learns the depth of Tywin's plot via Jeyne's mother, ect. Since they've invented Robb's wife's character, why not take it all the way. Might a bit over the top, though. Jeyne as a more passive role player, and the mom as the catalyst is easier to swallow and more calculated than dramatic

I really have forgotten more than I remember about the series and the last two books. I just had to look that up.

agree. there is a reason. They sorta know what they are doing, I would imagine.

One thing that kind of irks me is

that people don't stay dead. Why do Ned, Robb, and Tywin not get to come back to life, but we have to deal with Cat Stark being a zombie, the mountain being a frankenstein's monster, and the hound as a monk. Plus Jon Snow as a likely warged wolf ice dragon. I did like things better after season/book 1 when Ned died, because I thought dead was dead. Cat stark coming back was one of the most disappointing things to read in the series.

Hound a monk? Did I miss something?--I agree with Cat too. I was ahppy she "died" in the books because it was just brutal to read

This bugs me too.

I imagine there's got to be some kind of continuity between the red god and the Others, two sides of the same coin with some similar capabilities that explains all this zombification, but I'm hoping there's something more interesting than that going on.

I've really seen enough of Theon getting tortured. This adds nothing.
I think it shows the depth of what Theon has to suffer through and how he becomes a complete other person.
It doesn't need time in every episode.
I don't mind it at all. In fact, I was hoping the show would show more of what he endured since I pretty much had to leave it to my imgination in the book.
It's coming at the expense of other story lines that are coming to a head shortly and haven't been nearly as fully developed as they were in the books.*

They have at least another season or so to plumb the depths of Theon's situation, and frankly I think we've seen enough to not be totally clueless when the results are revealed. *They've done very little to set up the scope of desolation the people of the North will experience as a result of the Red Wedding, and thus haven't set the foundation for the motivations of some important actors later in the books. E.g. we don't know who Robb's squire is at this point in the show, and similarly don't have any introduction to others who attend the wedding. I doubt they can cram all of that into the episode time they have left prior to the main event, so the overall story is going to be a little poorer for it.

Check out the description of the gravedigger at the monastery visited by Brienne in A Feast for Crows, as well as the phrasing used by the head monk in describing that the Hound is no more.

I like the meat of it, my question is about why there is so much of it. I may be wrong, but I think there's been Theon in every single episode while bigger storylines like Dany or LF have had episodes with nothing. I like that they show his punishment, and the confession right before the revelation of being back at his torture chamber was awesome. It just seems that they're spending a disproportionate amount of time on it.

Agree to a point. Had no problem with the IMMEDIATE resurection, and the warging thing was pretty well established and limited, but raising a several day dead and bloated Cat was just stupid.

Some fodder for the Amanda Peet concern...

My friends are starting an HBO pilot this week with her in it. It's already got a first season ordered which will shoot in January. So on one hand, she's in the HBO fold now and HBO likes to reuse actors they like. On the other hand though, they don't seem to reuse them across shows, so if she's on this one, that might disqualify her for GoT. Not sure if this is good or bad news for the dread of her appearing, but chances are good that she'll get naked, afterall it is HBO

The "Robb attacks Casterly Rock in the last episode" speculation is almost as amusing as "Dany storms Westeros with her dragons/khalasar in season 2" in between seasons 1 and 2.

The conspiracy theory revolving around the description of Jeyne's hips in the books is one of the few that I buy as legit, so indirectly, Talisa's pregnancy is very interesting to me. I realize that they make it a point to say that Jeyne was force-fed milk of the poppy to stop any potential pregnancy, and Talisa's baby could be taken out of the equation in the show as well, but it will be very interesting if this is a case of the show pointing the way to something that's still coming up in the books. I hope that's the case. More interesting than the baby just being killed 'cause whatever.
Can you dumb this down for me?

the hound = guy digging the graves. The Mountain = silent new member of the kg. I had completely forgotten "where" the mountain was at the end of book 5 until this thread.

There was one chapter in the book where someone described Jeyne's hips as good for childbearing. In another chapter later on in the book Jamie (I think it was Jamie) described "Jeyne's" hips as very narrow. So people have speculated that Jeyne was switched out with someone who was presented to the Lannister's as Jeyne and the real Jeyne was taken away somewhere so she could have Robb's kid.

. Huh? I know I've forgotten a lot and probably ripped through the latest too fast to pick up subtle stuff, but I thought the Sand Snake, or whatever his name is, killed the Mountain slowly and painfully from the poisoned spear in the duel.

Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper with the poison spear.

I, also, don't recall sabertooth and moe's references.

Yea, I'm realizing how lazily I read the last 2 books. Maybe I need to reread now and again when wow comes out. When I went and read the theory yesterday though, I recalled thinking the same thing at the time if my first read. It's just I'm forgetting entire storylines apparently. Getting old. :bag:Where has great Jon umber been this season?

I didnt realize the Hound/ Grave digger stuff but I did pick up on the Mountain. Cersi sent word to Qyburn through her uncle to have him get a champion to defend her. It's believed that Qyburn resurrected the MOuntain and he is now in the Kings Guard

Warning - spoilers from future HBO seasons potentially

In the 4th book, Brienne, Hyle Hunt, Podrick, and the Septon travel to an island called the Quiet Isle looking for Sansa Stark. On that island there is a huge acolyte digging graves - the throws dirt at the group. He also has a lame leg (the wound that was infected when he fought the Tickler and Polliver in book 3) and there is a large mean warhorse on the island that had bit off one of the acolyte's ears when they tried to geld it. Since the priest/Septon that ran the island had actually talked to Sandor as he was "dying" there is a lot of evidence to point to that the silent gravedigger is Sandor.

In the 5th book, it is pretty clear that the new Kingsguard is a resurrected or healed Gregor Clegane (the Mountain). Qyburn prevented the poison from killing Gregor after his duel with Oberyn Martell.

In the 5th book, it is pretty clear that the new Kingsguard is a resurrected or healed Gregor Clegane (the Mountain). Qyburn prevented the poison from killing Gregor after his duel with Oberyn Martell.
OK, forgot about the mountain. Don't think I even caught that stuff about the Hound when I initially read the books.

I think we see the guy digging the graves fight the silent new member of the kingsguard at some point
Man, I don't even know what story you're talking about here.
the hound = guy digging the graves. The Mountain = silent new member of the kg. I had completely forgotten "where" the mountain was at the end of book 5 until this thread.
Still clueless.
Warning - spoilers from future HBO seasons potentially In the 4th book, Brienne, Hyle Hunt, Podrick, and the Septon travel to an island called the Quiet Isle looking for Sansa Stark. Definitely something crazy going on there with the Mountain. IIRC, the other King's Guard stated at some point that the new one never sleeps, eats, talks, takes his armor off or doesn't even go to the bathroom. Plus they suppousedly sent the Mountain's skull to Dorne to prove he was finally dead as revenge for killing the Dornish princess & her child that was married to the Targaryen. Looking forward to what way that storyline goes and who ends up defeating him.
