The fact that Tyrian ultimately has no one and is a complete outcast is a pretty major theme of the series. His greatest love is a whore, his best friend a sellsword. Martin really does a great job with his character. Probably doesn't get the credit he deserves for character development because he's a fantasy author.sn0mm1s said:

No, I don't think that is likely at all. Varys was willing to let Tyrion die and wasn't willing to testify on his behalf. The only reason he released him was because Jaime threatened him at sword point. I think too many readers assume you must be a Targ to ride a dragon and, because Martin likes Tyrion, that he must be a Targ. If Tyrion becomes a dragon rider it will likely be due to coming into possession of the horn that Euron/Victarion plan on using.

Well said. Pretty much my opinion as well, though I do think you need to possess some Targ blood to ride the dragons. Perhaps because of how the dragons acted around the leader of the Golden Company, a man with very distant and highly diluted Targ blood, but even then they were much calmer around him, something that Martin was careful to note for the reader.
I think the Ironman (and any others) are going to be in for a big nasty surprise if they think the horn will make the dragons totally submissive to their will. You need Targ blood as well. The dragons are already a bit resistant and willful to Dany (though she IS the mother of dragons and CAN ride them, being impervious to their fire - an Uber Targ, if you will). The horn probably makes them more controllable to those they're already drawn to, i.e. Targs. If an Ironman tries it, #1 the horn will kill whoever blows it and #2 the dragons will roast that mofo anyway.

I don't recall Bronn ever betraying Tyrion. From my foggy memory this is how it went down. They met, Bronn apologized in an almost Varys-like way, saying he would help but it was a near no-win situation and he wasn't about to sacrifice himself.
Tyrion and Bron excerpt:

I think you guys are mis-remembering Varys's role in Tywin's death. He practically goads Tyrion up to the tower, knowing full well that he would find Shae in bed with his father. Of course Varys knew what was going to happen.
And don't forget Varys kills Tywin's brother himself.

Varys tells Kevan that he was doing too good of a job in straightening out the realm. If Vary's goal is for the realm to be in dissary in order for Aegon to be able to return a conquerer....he'd want Tywin (who with Tommen the King and much more malleable and kind than Jofferey) out of the picture.
That's why Littlefinger, not Varys was behind the murder of Joffery....
To me, the Littlefinger v. Varys battle is the real one. What does Littlefinger want? There are some theories that he's actually the hero in this whole thing as he's looking for a society based on merit rather than name and title.

I don't like it......and I think it'd be a bit too convienent. Did Tywin tell Tyrion that "since he couldn't prove he wasn't his son" in the show?

1) Varys doesn't arm Tyrion.
2) Varys also knows that there are guards on the door to the chambers.
3) Varys knows both Shae and Tywin are in the bedchamber - but doesn't know where they are or what they are doing.
4) The only reason Tyrion even knows that he could get to the Hand's chambers is because of something Shae told him - Varys didn't bring it up at all.
5) For Tyrion to kill Tywin he would have to find a weapon, catch Tywin and Shae unaware and unarmed, and kill them before they call for guards.
That is a lot to assume would go right for Tyrion to murder both of them.

Sure was convenient for there to be a stool right next to that crossbow hanging on the wall. I think you're seriously underestimating Varys here.

The guy isn't omniscient nor can he teleport. Jaime woke him up and forced him at swordpoint to get Tyrion out. It isn't like Varys could go into the bedchamber and place a crossbow (the only weapon that an awake Tywin wouldn't be able defend himself against with a weapon of his own).
Varys has made plenty of errors in judgment.
1) Ned Stark's death
2) Viserys death.
3) The actions of Daenerys (staying in Essos rather than coming to Westeros)
4) Murdering of Robert's bastards
5) Losing Arya Stark
6) Dealing with Melisandre
Those are just off the top of my head. Yes, he is a great schemer but do you really think he placed weapons for Tyrion in Tywin's room on the offchance that Tyrion would recognize the mosaic on the floor in a place he has never been? Climb up a 10-20 story building? Stealthily find a weapon, arm himself, then be able to kill both Tywin and Shae without alerting anyone?

I think he's actually as omniscient and all knowing as any character in the books; except in regards to the affairs of Littlefinger. Come on...this is the guy that invented a dungeon keeper to play.
Plus, if his goal is to weaken the realm (which he said it was) 1 and 4 serve that purpose.

I'm not sure what the quote was in the book, but on the show I believe he said (of the Valyrian steel sword), "Keep it. A man with no hand and no family needs a weapon" or something close to that anyways.

That's about as close to loyalty and friendship as Bronn gets. He's a very honest character and Tyrion knows what he says to be true. I think Tyrion means it when he lets him know that he understands.

That quote about the sword wasn't in the book - I don't recall a line from Tywin like that at all.
The Tyrion is a Targ hinges on three things IIRC
1) He dreams of dragons
2) He liked playing with fire at Casterly Rock as a kid
3) When he asks his father to recognize him as his heir after the Battle of the Blackwater, Tywin says something like, "Laws of men let you use my name and wear my lions because I cannot prove that you are not mine."

Yeah, at the end of last season, they ran into Sam and Gilly at Nightfort. There was no magic and no mention of cold hands, he just led them to the tunnel underneath the wall.

And the title of the 6/15 episode makes me think they finish the season in the cave with the children of the forest. Not much in the books for Bran & co after that right now.

Yea, they changed it so Sam never meets Coldhands. I think he was hinted at in the last episode though. Martin had Bran touch a godtree, which let him communicate with either the green seer or Coldhands. One of the images he sees is a burst of ravens flying across a wintry landscape. My guess is that's Coldhands waiting for him.

Looks like this season will go out with the trial by combat, then Stannis arriving at the wall, then Bran meeting the green seer.
All next season I imagine they'll draw out Bran's training in the cave while we get loads of Dany whining in Mereen, Arya training in Bravoos, and Tyrion traveling to Dany. Oh, and Brienne wandering around Westeros as well.
ETA: Season 5 ends with Jon getting stabbed? Hmmmm....
By then I pray Martin releases Winds of Winter.

And it seems that many characters either know or infer that Cersie and Kingslayer are lovers, why is it not also well known that her offspring are probably not Roberts as well. Always thought this was weird.

You have to love how the Lannisters are totally effing up their short run at the top. Tywin can't get over the circumstances of Tyrion's birth to name him Lord of Casterly Rock (which we all know he'd be amazing at), and Cersei and to a lesser extent Jaimee go out of their way to totally screw up their alliance with the Tyrells, who from the outset seemed very willing to play good on their part.
ETA: it should be great fun when the show catches up to Crazy Cersei during Tommen's reign. In particular I'm looking forward to seeing her walk naked across the courtyard. :fap:
