one of my favorite tools in the tool kit is to look at players that may have been thrust into a starting position, have 2-3-4 good games in a row, but may still be below the threshold of general awareness of other owners in the leagues... than pounce on them before the cat is out of the bag...
sometimes they revert back to the norm, but in bigger leagues where you have few open spots on your roster to churn players like this, you occassionally stumble on to some gems...
richard marshall falls into this category (#3 CB in some of my leagues), & we have been talking about him lately...
i try and do this in my column ear to the ground, but i'll be on a one month rotation (AFC/NFC East, North, South & West - two divisions & eight teams per week), so it could be a while in between installments... i'll try & use this thread as an interim vehicle to discuss potential sleepers that may be rocketing up the board...
others should feel free to weigh in with sleepers of their own (assuming you have them already & don't want to spill the beans on players you have targeted to leaguemates that may be looking in here
)...
the first player i offer is eric green, ARI CB... especially in mandatory start CB leagues that break out DB scoring between DBs separately...
in some of my leagues with boosted IDP scoring (which i favor & mostly play in... for instance, more than 1 pt per tackle, more than 3 pts per sack & INT, etc...), prorating green's stats in last four games into seven (not sure if he started the entire season, but i don't think so?) would yield something close to a top 5 CB...
he was taken in some leagues a week ago, but not exactly a household name yet, so available in another...
sometimes a write-up gets my attention... in this case, he was talked about in scouting section of sporting news, and the scout spoke highly of him... he stood out in the CHI with some monster hits over the middle... another thing to like about him is he may not be as feared as rolle, so he could see a lot of action... also, the NFC West throws a lot, so he could see a lot of action for that reason as well... also, the offense could very well be good in future, but with struggling OL & rookie QB will probably experience growing pains this season, & ARI defense could see an inordinate amount of snaps in 06...
another thing we can use this thread for is to compare notes about players that may not be starting now, but may next season if there is an imminent move expected... most of my leagues have free agency WW window pick up moratorium at end of regular season (around week 13-14), so that is a good time to scoop up prospects like that as you wont have another chance until following summer, & you could conceivably beat some of leaguemates to punch & land some gems that way, taking them off the WW before they become popular...
i was just reading that lance briggs not expected to be back in CHI in 07 (don't know if there is consensus on this, but i'm hearing more people saying he will be gone than retained)... grabbing the potential replacement could confer a big edge... there is a chance they may draft or get replacement from free agency (CHI front office, that is), but it could be worth a shot & pay occasional dividends...
