Merle Haggard Dies at 79

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Country music legend, and Oildale native, Merle Haggard has passed away on his birthday. He was 79-years-old

The singer-songwriter was one of the pioneers of the Bakersfield sound. Haggard was also involved in the Outlaw Country movement.

In addition to 40 #1 hits, Haggard has won just about every music award. Last month, Haggard's hit "Mama Tried" was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry. Haggard was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994, he is in the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

Always preferred Buck's sound to Merle's, but both will always be Bako's co-country music legends.

RIP Merle

First concert I ever attended.  Won two tickets on the radio and went with my dad.  Had to be late 70's or early 80's.

RIP

Damn the great ones are dropping like flies. This includes the older generations in my own life.

Merle thank you, RIP, man there will be a throw down in heaven tonight

I grew up in an area where country music was popular, which meant that of course I hated anything I deemed associated with it.  As a result, I didn't have any appreciation for Merle until I went to see Bob Dylan (circa 2008?) and Merle was the opening act.  My god had I missed some genius before that.  RIP to a great one.

RIP Merle.  A real legend in country music.  I had a cousin who toured with him as a fiddle player.

RIP Merle..glad i got to see him in concert.  Wass about 20yrs ago.  Fantastic show.  In about a 2-3 year span i got to see Merle, Waylon (twice), Willie, and Johnny Cash.  All amazing shows

So bummed. I was going to see him a couple years ago and missed it. My dad made us listen to Merle growing up so I've always dug him. I still quite often belt out the lyrics to "Working Man Blues" when I'm trying to annoy the wife and kids.
