Helmet Rule Clarification (1 Viewer)

Young's overtime scramble was incredible. But I wonder about his celebration and whether under the NFL rules it should have been flagged.

15 yard penalty. Any player who removes his helmet after a play while on the field.

I assume this is a deadball foul, so probably not even of issue in an overtime case after a score. But I am unsure if it is or not.

It just seems to me like this rule has really gone uncalled this season. I have seen it many times, and I haven't seen one flag. I think it is stupid rule, but if it is a rule it should still be called.

Just curious.

Players can take their helmets off after the game is over. If there had still been time left in regulation, it would have been a penalty.

Not to hijack but along those lines I saw Mike McKenzie get a flag for unsportsmen like for having a conversation with TO last night. I don't believe I have seen a flag thrown for the Lambeau leap (clearly excessive celebration). What I am missing? There has to be some kind of uniformed standard, it looks like these refs are making it up as they go along.

If they would have thrown a flag on Young, when would the penalty be assessed? On the kickoff of next week's game?

If he had done the exact same thing with one second left on the clock, it's a fifteen-yard penalty.
If he had decided to go to Med school instead of play football he would be a Doctor.
Damn freaking right. That, and this whole "you can't take off your helmet or show emotion or breathe heavily in a non-sexual manner unless you want to cost your team 15 yards" rule is 2nd in lameness only to the overprotection given to the quarterback this season.

Not only was the game over, but he was also OUT OF BOUNDS when the helmet came off.
That wouldn't have mattered. The helmet has to stay on until the player gets back to the bench. The rule came about a few years ago when players kept taking their helmets off to celebrate TDs. It was a "look at me" thing. It had nothing to do with player safety, it was just more of the usual No Fun League stuff.

I was wondering what happened to the helmet rule myself, when last week vs. the Patriots I watched a Detriot Lions defensive player take his helmet off and scream at the refs. He ranted and raved with his helmet off, drawing neither the "no helmet" flag nor the "unsportsmanlike" flag.

I guess it's only a penalty if bad-for-the-league guys like Chad Johnson and Steve Smith do it...

Hi Kit,There is some truth to that with the higher profile guys it seems.J

Ed Zachary! I can hear the ref now:"Deadball foul. Unsportsmanlike conduct on number ten for removing the helmet. Fifteen yards. The penalty will be assessed...ah, poop! Never mind. The game is over."

Don't laugh. The NHL still counts penalties at the end of a game. I have fond memories of games between the Leafs and Hawks or Red Wings being over for twenty minutes while the arena announcer was still running through the post-game brawl penalties."To Chicago's number three, Dave Manson... a game misconduct... a second game misconduct... a third game misconduct..."

I know (Sharks fan, here). When the NFL implements game misconducts, especially for removing helmets, then VY's action becomes a concern.

What about Dwayne Rudd? :wall:
Rudd took off his helmet during play, not after. On a related note, I remember when the Pats stuffed Edge on 4th down on the one-yard line in Indy in 2003, Vrabel took off his helmet after the play in celebration. There was no penalty. Several Colts fans #####ed that there should have been a flag. They were right...that was the rule. What they were wrong about, however, was how it would have been assessed. Their contention was that they would have gotten a first and goal at the one. What would have happened is that the Pats would have kept the ball and penalized half the distance to the goal...a whole foot and a half. If Vrabel pulled a Rudd and took off his helmet before the whistle, then they would have had a legitimate gripe.
