Say you are in an area temporarily (4-7 days) without any cell service -- not even a single bar -- and no wifi near you.

What are your options for getting internet?  Is a satellite hotspot the only option?

Check to see if other cell services can get a signal in the area, then buy a burner phone that uses that service.

Yep. You can get a functioning Smartphone without contract for about a total of eighty or ninety bucks for the month. I've done it with T Mobile.

No, we won't be.  It's a guy's trip on a houseboat where we absolutely have no cell service.  Trust me, I love being unplugged.  I make calls to check in at home when we make trips to the dock store.

The need is two-fold.  For emergencies in case someone at home needs to reach us and so we can pick up college/NFL games/whatever while we play cards at night.

I wish it were that easy (unless I'm missing something).  We literally have No Service on all of our phones.

Good point.  I'll check with the marina.  We are all from Ohio and the marina is in Tennessee.  Mountains block the signal on the water (I'm assuming).

My wife has a gps device for when she goes hiking.  Shes able to send text messages.  It beams off a satellite.
