Help setting up a league (1 Viewer)

This is the 1st year we are using MFL and also the first year we will be having 12 teams in our league. What is the norm for roster spots in a 12 team league?

We start:

QB, 2RB, 2WR, Flex, TE, K, Def.....and actually that opens up a whole new question. Should we remove the flex spot now that we have 12 teams (we have had 8-10 in the past)?

Thanks

By the way, this is a non-keeper. We do not have an IR spot, but we are considering it. Basically if we are going to cut down our roster spots (18 right now), we may use an IR spot to replace it.

Thanks

We dont have the flex but have to start 3Wr's in a 12 team league so the amount of starters is the same. Our rosters are 18 spots and there is still plenty action on the waiver wire and trades.

I suspect that 18 may be one or 2 higher than most other people with the same league requirements but it allows you enough room to cover bye weeks at every position. 2qb, 4rb, 6wr, 2 te, 2k, 2def = 18 spots. You can carry as many as you want at a position but if you are someone that likes to be covered for injuries or byes 18 is double the amount of starters needed.

ETA - We did add 1 IR spot last year as well.

We start 1QB, 1RB, 2WR, 1TE, 2Flex...so I'd vote "no" on removing the flex position...

As for roster size its a question of preference and the kind of owners you have...do you want viable starters sitting on the waiver wire week to week or do you want to allow guys to build up a stable of viable backups and encourage more trading?

With you 9 starters I'd say a minimum roster size is 15, as an owner in an active trading league I'd like to see more like 20...

For reference we are a contract league and we also have IDPs, so with 14 starters we have 30 man rosters...

WRT to the IR question...this one comes up a lot especially during the season when guys get nicked...the problem is there are a lot of poorly written IR rules (allowing teams to stash perfectly healthy players)...

Every time we discuss this, the only logical suggestion for redraft leagues is to simply increase roster size to allow for a few injured players to lurk at the bottom...

In contract, keeper, and dynasty leagues its another issue entirely...we use IR just like the NFL...you can place a contracted player on IR, but once you do he is out for the season...

Thanks for the input guys.

If we add an IR, what rules do you use for that? I just dont want it to be abused.

Code - I see we posted at the same time.

Yes, I am worried that the rules will not be precise enough and someone will abuse the system.

I think the right question to ask yourself is "what are we trying to accomplish with IR?"...my guess is you want guys to be able to open up a roster spot to find a fill-in while someone is out with an injury, but still hold the rights to that injured player...then ask yourself "would simply adding 1 or 2 roster spots accomplish the same thing?"...the answer is yes everytime...
