HERD's 2008 NFL Mock Draft - Round 1 (1 Viewer)

Colin Dowling

Footballguy
Draft order determined by me after 2 weeks of watching teams. Yes, I am aware that the order won't look this way. Half of these guys won't even go in round 1 come springtime, but I thought I'd get us started...

1. Kansas City Chiefs - Andre Woodson - QB - UK - Darren McFadden aside, Woodson is the top-player in this draft. His accuracy wasn't on display in the Louisville game until the final few minutes, but he has all the tools and strength to be a franchise-caliber QB.

2. Atlanta Falcons - Brian Brohm - QB - UL - Less for the Petrino angle and more for the fact that the Falcons aren't going to shuffle around Leftwich and Harrington for long before looking for another #1 guy.

3. BUffalo BIlls - Jake Long - OT - MIchigan

4. Miami Dolphins - Kenny Phillips - S - UM

5. Oakland Raiders - Glenn Dorsey - DT - LSU

6. New York Giants - Darren McFadden - RB - UA - Quite a coup for the Giants and their new coach.

7. Dallas Cowboys (via Cle) - Desean Jackson - WR - Cal - TO and Glenn a year older, this one has Jerry Jones all over it.

8. Philadelphia Eagles - Derrick Harvey - DE - UF

9. Jacksonville Jaguars - Malcolm Jenkins - CB - OSU

10. Tampa Bay Bucs - Sam Baker - OT - USC

11. St. Louis Rams - Frank Okam - DT - Texas

12. Carolina Panthers - Jasper Brinkley - LB - USC

13. Minnesota Vikings - Matt Ryan - QB - BC - The TJ experiment is over.

14. New York Jets - Calais Campbell - DE - Miami

15. San Diego Chargers - Steve Slaton - RB - WVU - Turner is gone to Cleveland or Green Bay, Slaton gets the "backup LT" gig.

16. Arizona Cardinals - Dan Connor - LB - PSU

17. Cincinnati Bengals - Lawrence Jackson - DE - USC

18. Houston Texans - Ray Rice - RB - Rutgers - The Ahman 2 year stop gap cedes to the Rice years.

19. New Orleans Saints - Chris Long - DE - UVA

20. Baltimore Ravens - Colt Brennen - QB - Hawaii - Big arm guy from a complex offense is what Boller should have been for Billick.

21. Washington Redskins - Antoine Cason - CB - Arizona

22. Patriots (via SF) - Quentin Groves - LB - UGA

23. Tennessee Titans - Early Doucet - WR - LSU - Enough quantity, the Titans look early for quality.

24. Detroit Lions - Vernon Gholston - DE - OSU

25. Green Bay Packers - Michael Oher - OT - UM - Yes, the guy from the book goes in round 1.

26. Denver Broncos - Ryan Clady - OT - BSU

27. Chicago Bears - Chad Henne - QB - UM - See ya, Rex.

28. Pittsburgh Steelers - Jon Hefney - DB - UT

29. Seattle Seahawks - Ian Johnson - RB - BSU - People in dynasty leagues will pass on Johnson because he is a year or two from starting. They'll be sorry they did.

30. Dallas Cowboys - Keith Rivers - LB - USC

31. Indianapolis Colts - Sedric Ellis - DT - USC

21. Washington Redskins - Antoine Cason - CB - Arizona
With Shawn Springs likely gone and Smoot not a desirable starter, I could see them going CB. However, they've used top 10 picks on DBs three straight years and will need help/youth on the DL.

Good read, I have a feeling the broncos will take a LB in the first round next year. DJ Williams is a stud, but Ian Gold is getting old and Nate Webster is not the answer at OLB. Although OL is a big need as well, i guess it depends on what LB and what OL are available come their pick.

13. Minnesota Vikings - Matt Ryan - QB - BC - The TJ experiment is over.

Interesting, but I think this depends on Chili's status. If Chili is gone, then I agree, if not then Chili's arrogance will not let it happen.

:confused:Pick #13 means they went somewhere around 7-9 or 8-8, right? Not gonna happen.A top ten pick and they'll look for a safety or another WR if Chili is still there, a QB if he's not.I would love to see Desean Jackson parter up with Sidney Rice.

McFadden to the Boys

and SD will not pick 15th and will not choose a RB

other than that, it's a great start

wtf is Chili?

great effort....... I disagree with most of it though

... without going into huge detail I do not think there will be as many Rb's and QBs drafted as high as you project.

Cleveland , despite there win over Cinncy , will finish with a lot worse record than you predict.

Head coach Brad Childress. a.k.a. Mr. Noodle.

2. Atlanta Falcons - Brian Brohm - QB - UL - Less for the Petrino angle and more for the fact that the Falcons aren't going to shuffle around Leftwich and Harrington for long before looking for another #1 guy.
This seems to be the de facto assumption. However, I would not be surprised to see Jake Long be a target. 13 sacks in 2 games is a collective breakdown. As much as Petrino indicated Harrington is not being aggreesive enough (and this is true), Wayne Gandy might as well have hinges on his shoulders. A stud OT in ATL is long overdue.

Picks that I can see happening:

2. Atlanta Falcons - Brian Brohm - QB - UL

3. Buffalo BIlls - Jake Long - OT - Michigan

4. Miami Dolphins - Kenny Phillips - S - UM

5. Oakland Raiders - Glenn Dorsey - DT - LSU

16. Arizona Cardinals - Dan Connor - LB - PSU

17. Cincinnati Bengals - Lawrence Jackson - DE - USC

18. Houston Texans - Ray Rice - RB - Rutgers

This draft is void of CBs and WRs, which have been the heavy spots for the last half decade or more. I agree that so many QBs is unlikely, but Woodson, Brohm, and Ryan - while not as strong as the Vince, Leinart, Cutler bunch - are better then last year's crop by a wide margin in my view.

What?! No Trades?

Looks good, I don't follow a lot of college ball. Actually I don't follow any college ball, so I always look forward to the draft threads here to get me ready for the next draft.

Picks I can't see happening...

6. New York Giants - Darren McFadden - RB - UA

He'll be a top 5 pick, though I agree KC and Buffalo cannot take him, and Brohm would go to ATL before McFadden. ... Cleveland will probably have a top 5 pick... meaning Dallas would love to have this guy. Ditto Oakland.

11. St. Louis Rams - Frank Okam - DT - Texas

Run Stopper is one of their top needs, but would they really burn back to back 1st Rounders on a DT? (Carricker)

13. Minnesota Vikings - Matt Ryan - QB - BC

Agreed with a previous post. If Childress is still coaching here, I don't think it happens. He seems to like the more physically gifted QB after coaching McNabb and drafting Jackson.

15. San Diego Chargers - Steve Slaton - RB - WVU

No chance would they have a pick this high (read: a shot at Slaton)... nor would they replace Turner with a top pick (cash considerations... other needs). I can see them trading down or trading their 1st Rd pick for someone else's 1st Rounder next year (i.e. what the Pats did in '06).

21. Washington Redskins - Antoine Cason - CB - Arizona

On one hand, they REALLY like to draft highly regarded CBs. On the other hand, they already have an entire D-backfield of top draft picks (full of semi-busts nonetheless). But couldn't they use some youth at OL?

22. Patriots (via SF) - LB

Not in the Pioli/Belicheck era.

23. Tennessee Titans - Early Doucet - WR - LSU

This guy doesn't strike me as someone that would be an above-average blocker like his former LSU counterpart Bowe, which is exactly what the Titans should be looking for.

27. Chicago Bears - Chad Henne - QB - UM

Maybe in the 2nd Round. John David Booty would be a better fit in the 1st Round.

29. Seattle Seahawks - Ian Johnson - RB - BSU

I'm skeptical of this guy translating to NFL-level competition. Not that he can't within 2-3 years, but what makes you think he's worthy of a 1st Round pick, let alone coming out early?

Let's not get too worked up over the order.

Mock drafts, even when we know the order, are more to generate discussion of "Should I be happy if my team drafts Joe Blow over John Doe?" and "What can Mr. X do for my team" anyway.

25. Green Bay Packers - Michael Oher - OT - UM - Yes, the guy from the book goes in round 1.
what means this?
Oher was the subject of an excellent book called "The Blind Side" (by Michael Lewis, author of "Moneyball") about how he went from being a social, economic, and mental pariah to someone who everyone wanted to watch over and take care of simply because he could play left tackle. I HIGHLY recommend reading it.

where is Earl Bennet? Guy is a stud.
I like alot of the WRs that could potentially come out.Not totally sold on Doucet or Sweed, but Adarius Bowman and Harry Douglas will be 1st Rounders. And a handfull of Juniors (Mario Manningham, DeSean Jackson, Malcolm Kelly, Earl Bennett, etc.) could make for a deep WR corps.

19. New Orleans Saints - Chris Long - DE - UVA
with Will Smith and Charles Grant, I don't see them grabbing one in the 1st. They need a playmaking LB, TE and/or WR more.
But, they did have two stud ends in Howard and Grant when they took Smith...as a little piece of history. So, never say never. Sometimes the value is simply too good to pass up, as was the case when Smith fell to them.Besides it's September.

sounds like the kinda guy Packer fans could get behind :X

Why would they? They seem to have a good thing going with JJ and MBIII. They're young and showing promise (less JJ, I guess but whatever). They have more pressing needs, I think.

Howard had the franchise tag, too. Smith's contract is up next season but they seem committed to signing their best players. Looking at his production, it would be hard to argue he doesn't fit that profile. He's young, productive and a solid character guy. I can't imagine them parting with him anytime soon.

1. Kansas City Chiefs - Andre Woodson - QB - UK - Darren McFadden aside, Woodson is the top-player in this draft. His accuracy wasn't on display in the Louisville game until the final few minutes, but he has all the tools and strength to be a franchise-caliber QB.
[1999]1. Cleveland Browns - Tim Couch - QB - UK - Ricky Williams aside, Couch is the top-player in this draft. His accuracy wasn't on display in the Louisville game until the final few minutes, but he has all the tools and strength to be a franchise-caliber QB.[/1999] :excited:

Is Mike Hart just outside the first round or is he looking at 3rd or 4th round?

I love the way he plays, he is good at reading his blocks (especially in a zone blocking schemes), and I don't think speed is everything when it comes to RBs.

I don't get it.
