I think in general Americans are willing to forgive athletes if they are (a) punished (b) contrite. If Vick had somehow escaped serving in prison, or/and had a confrontational attitude like "It's only dogs, that's my culture, the Hell with all of you, etc." there would have been thousands of protesters today.
