Laid off today. But it was very amicable. I am getting several weeks severance so no disaster on the immediate horizon. Company has been apparently having cash flow issues that are bigger than was let on to me. Oh well. I guess it's lucky I got a second job a couple of weeks ago they really want me to work there a lot more hours. So at least it isn't like last time when there were no jobs to be had. And I promise this time I won't disappear because of it. I have several possible ways to go. I may go pizza and certainly will for a bit. I may look to companies who could use my help selling cameras, servers, etc. The world is my oyster. I mean companies are dying to hire 51 year old workers right? :doh:

 
NC, I'm really sorry. You seem like such a knowledgeable capable guy. Here's hoping you find work quickly, and that it suits you, makes you happy, and pays you well.

That is teh suck. Glad you had something else to fall back on. Good luck man, I'm sure you'll be alright in the long run.

Sorry GB... definitely a shock to the system, but you're "wicked smaht" so I'm confident you'll land on your feet.

 
Thanks everyone. The hardest part is telling the wife. Got that over with.

Going to take it easy this weekend and get started looking next week. Unlike when I lost my job in the dark days of 08-09 I have made some good contacts via networking so I am going to start working them. I feel pretty confident and if truth be told this may well end up being a good thing. I had been thinking of looking anyway but it was tough to make that move. I really like the people I worked with and had it pretty good as far as everything but pay goes. But I really should have been making more, a pretty good bit more, and I knew I was never getting there with this company. So with a little luck maybe I get a solid raise and some better benefits than you can get at a smaller company. In the interim I have the pizza job to put some money in my pocket.

So onward and upward.

As if that isn't enough. I work in the computer industry. The last few years acting as day to day general manager and handling technical sales of servers, computers, firewalls, software, IP video cameras, video servers, etc.

Sorry to hear that. Hang in there, NC. Agree with Tim and others, the light shines through here. Give it a night, maybe the weekend, stay positive, gain some peace, and you will emerge fresh and ready to tackle the challenge, you can do it, and here's predicting you find an even better situation than the one you just left. Good luck and go get `em.

Any PM skills? My boss just asked me if I knew of anyone who might be a candidate for a couple technical PM jobs here. Or, if you prefer, you can send me a PM about what kind of opportunity you'd like to try next and I can look at our internal board to see what kinds of jobs we have....we have tons.

I have done a lot of project management, I run our camera projects which can be quite large for example. I will shoot you a PM with kind of an outline of my experience some time this weekend and if anything fits let me know. And thanks of course.

Good luck NC. Sorry to hear that - it sucks at any age, and at our age, its tougher. Hang in there, and as you know, these things can turn into better situations. Especially since it sounds like you weren't earning at the level your talents will allow.
