I enjoy the tv and the movie ranking threads and yeah we can argue that X show is better than Y show or Z movie is so much better than C movie but in a way that's boring. They are well known and well liked....that isn't what this thread is for. This thread is for those movies and tv shows that aren't well known or well regarded that we think are pretty good.

I know there is already a tv thread and a movie thread so this might be a little redundant but I had felt like a more specific thread for shows/movies that might not otherwise be mentioned would be helpful to us (or maybe just me) in filling out our "to watch" lists. In theory, these are sub 6 (or maybe sub 7) in IMDB/RT scores. Of course the paradox is that if they are not well know then we might not even know about them.

What "bad" tv shows/movies do you enjoy?

And since I started this thread and have zero qualms about how easily entertained I am, I'll go first...

I recently talked about this movie in the rental thread and I like Congo.

Hmmm... underrated movies

Gunga Din (39)- Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr and Victor McLaglen play 3 British soldiers in India who are in search of an ancient cult with a palace made of gold. It's swashbuckling fun and had to be a big influence on Indiana Jones. It's certainly plagued by some racism and there are jokes made at the expense of the Indians but if you can look past it and it being more than 80 years old, it's a blast.

The Mob (51) Broderick Crawford plays an undercover detective investigating corruption on the docks, not quite On the Waterfront but it's a great hidden crime/noir gem

Big Wednesday (78) A small group of surfer friends enjoy life and as time passes, things change. Not much of a description but the movie is beauriful and a young Gary Busey is a curiosity

The Pledge (01) Jack Nicholson plays a retired detective who has promised to help a family find the person who killed their child but this isn't a movie about solving a mystery or getting revenge, it's about the promise and the obsession

The Pledge was a good movie

My submission for a great under-rated movie :

The Magic of Belle Isle
2012
PG
1h 49m
IMDb RATING 6.9
Morgan Freeman in The Magic of Belle Isle (2012)

In an effort to tap into his original talent, a wheelchair-bound author moves to a rural town, where he befriends a single mother and her three kids, who help reignite his passion for writing.

Director
Rob Reiner

I liked the magic of Belle Isle very much. Low key, family friendly and a big star to carry the movie.

Okay, I'll play. I have a personal lower limit of a 6.0 IMDB limit based on too many bad movies below there... but before I enacted that minimum standard, I liked these sub-6.0 movies:
  • 5.9 Cockneys vs. Zombies: On the Shaun of the Dead scale, not as good but still a lot of fun. Great chase scene at a retirement home.
  • 5.8 The Tunnel: Not a great movie, but I have a feeling its score is lower because of a toxic internet culture more than the movie itself. Decent enough.
  • 5.8 Army of the Dead: Not sure why this is so hated. It's nothing special, but a zombie heist movie is novel and the cast is good. Tig Notaro's replacement character somehow steals the show for me.
  • 5.8 I Saw the TV Glow: I don't actually like this movie, but think it's worth watching.
  • 5.8 Troll: Norwegian kaiju movie, it does what it says on the tin.
  • 5.8 Something in the Dirt: Not sure why this rating is so low, I liked this movie. Benson and Moorhead, must have been during lockdown.
  • 5.8 AVP: Stupid, sure. Also feeds that stupid Ancient Alien Secrets type of narrative that is so disrespectful to real cultures... but this is fun.
  • 5.7 Life After Beth: Good cast, zomcom that was fun. Nothing to rewatch.
  • 5.6 Man Vs.: Fake Bear Grylls runs into Predator, basically. This was a 6.5 for 95% of the movie, then they used a Commodore 64 for the alien CGI. Throw a guy in a rubber suit and this tiers up.
  • 5.5 Deadgirl: Uh... I'm glad someone actually managed to get this movie made because it was unique, but JFC, never make another movie like this.
  • 5.5 Spiderhead: I don't know - I liked it. Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller, a pretty interesting idea... not sure why the rating is so low.
  • 5.1 Black Mountain Side: Low budget Canadian psychological horror movie, nobody seems to like it but me, so probably don't watch it.
  • 5.1 Alone: Same script as #Alive, which was made at the same time in Korea. I liked both, not sure why the score is so low - there's room in the zombie genre for holing up in your apartment movies (Night Eats the World fits here too).
ETA: If we went sub-7.0 I'd find out what the character limit for a post is. 153 movies on my list from 6.0 to 6.9.
