High pitched noise (1 Viewer)

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
There is a noise in my office that is extremely high pitched that started about a week ago. It sounds like an old CRT monitor. Problem is, no one else can hear it besides me. It's driving me insane.

I've tried hunting it down by walking around, but the sound will go in and out. It seems like it is at it's worst when I am seated at my desk. I look like a crazy guy slowly moving around the office, turning my head slightly in different directions trying to figure out what it is.

My boss asked me what I was doing. I held up my finger, looked around, then said, "Do you hear that?"

His face pretty much told me not only he didn't hear it, but that he thought I might be a lunatic. I'm thinking I might have to buy a tinfoil hat. Maybe that Ritalin is actually Focusyn and MLB is trying to listen into my thoughts. :tinfoilhat:

I put one of these in a friend's light fixture once: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/b278/

It was set to the cricket noise. I thought our mutual friends that worked with him would tell him after a day or two. Turns out they didn't tell him and he almost went crazy. Tore his office apart 5 different times looking for the "cricket." The only saving grace was that he was already scheduled to change buildings after 3 weeks.

So prank maybe?

If I cover my ears it goes away. So I know it's not in my head. I've always had very sensitive ears so this is not uncommon. And I don't think it's a prank because no one cares enough about me at work to go to that much effort. Wow. That sounded way less sad in my head.

Thing is, if I sit at my desk, I can hear it buzzing. But even at my desk, if I turn my head even slightly, I can have it go away or come back.

but turn your head back to the original position and you hear it again?

Yes. But here's the thing. If I get up to move around trying to find the sound, the direction changes. So just because I'm at my desk and my head is facing north, doesn't mean the sound is coming from that way. Because once I start moving north, it goes away. Then I have to do the slow head turn thing again to try and locate the sound. Keep in mind, I'm in a semi crowded room. I look like I'm doing a really slow robot dance.

Don't underestimate the damage you've done with your door debacles.

If its intermittent it could be baby mice or rats calling for their mother who is probably dead. They'll die soon and the sound will stop, which is not necessarily a good thing because the sound will be replaced with the dead mouse stench that never goes away.

I feel like my ears are going to start bleeding soon. You know how a dog tilts his head when you start to talk to him? That's what this noise causes my head to do. I wonder if this has anything to do with me talking bad about Putin?

It was mentioned, but have we ruled out tinnitus?

If it is, welcome to the wonderful world of sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss for the rest of your life. It's great

Not that. I only hear it at work.

It's probably a nano-virus embedding itself in the base of your skull. That's why the sound is never from in front of you no matter what direction you face. Sorry, guy. You'll be missed.

I'll be real honest, as much as I want you to find the noise, I also don't want the images of you doing the robot dance while your coworkers quietly talk amongst themselves about how you've clearly lost your mind to stop.

Go into your office early, when no one is there. Turn everything off, especially the lights. Turn things on one at a time. You'll find it.

Or it's the emergency light. That would suck.

They'll be other things for them to laugh at. Just ask the President of the largest oil drilling company in the world who watched me play with my pen, as I pretended it was a rocket ship being sent in to outer space. Sadly, they never returned. RIP Pen Rocket astronauts. You were true American heroes. :(

Couple of issues there:

The office in my section has about 100 cubicles that all have at least a computer and two monitors on them. There are also fans and lights everywhere.

But most importantly, who the hell gets to work early?

how close are you to the windows, what floor are you on>
Center of the office, about 20 yards to the windows. 2nd floor of a 3 story building. The building used to be an old tire factory or something. The ceiling is literally made of wood, as well as a lot of the support beams. It's cool looking. But hopefully there's never a fire here.

Sounds like your desk is in a terrible location. At least you're not in the basement.

It's not as bad as it sounds. I'm actually in one of the better spots in the office.
