Hines Ward - Dismal Figures (1 Viewer)

He has a meager 9 catches for the year on 26 targets. Last week he caught 2 passes out of 11 thrown his way.

The obvious problem is Roethlisberger. Will it get better? How? When?

(I don't own Ward in any league.)

This sort of stat in encouraging. The number is so low that it can't just be explained by poor play, which would suggest that simple bad luck is at play. That's good, because it means Ward should see an increase in production even if Ben's play stays the same.

I'd expect Ward's numbers to improve significantly, as Rothlisberger gets healthier and more repetitions in practice. Big Ben has played rather poorly to say the least; he was "chuckin' and duckin'" in that Steeler - Jag contest.

I would put Ward solidly in the "Buy Low" category in the Trade market; he will pay dividends after the Week 4 bye.

I must have watched another game if he was targeted 11 times, I was yelling at the tv cause I needed him to put up some points. He was overthrown a couple of time but thats about it.

Its getting old real fast, esp when having guys on the bench that produces. I'm looking to sell low :bag:

Normally I feel the same way, but I've recently been re-evaluating that opinion. On the one hand, it's easy to say "his production is so low that it clearly represents a fluke and not a decline in his ability/effectiveness". On the other hand, who says it has to be an either/or proposition? Who's to say that Ward's low production isn't a COMBINATION of bad luck and reduced effectiveness?Personally, I'd rather see him catching 60% and just not being targeted than getting targeted just as much as always but only catching 35%. I'd have a lot easier time reassuring myself that the low targets were a fluke and not representative of a decrease in his potential than I do reassuring myself that the low catch numbers are a fluke and not representative of a decrease in his potential.I still like Ward, and haven't really dropped him much, I'm just thinking out loud here.

It could be, but even that means his production will increase from where it is today.I'm coming at this as a non-Ward angle so I'm thinking this could be a decent buy low scenario if an owner is frustrated enough.I also think it's worth keeping in mind that both Ward and Ben were hurt this summer (and may still be). They're still the same players on the same team in the same system, so it's not unreasonable to think they can get back to their previous level of productivity. This isn't Randy Moss moving to a new system with a new QB, etc.

I'd trade Ward for Moss right now...I think.

This pretty much sums up my feelings. How many of those 11 were actually catchable instead of desperation passes in his general direction? The targets stat is interesting, but it is often hard to discern the value of it without watching the games.Ward remains one of my automatic starters, but as it means leaving potential breakout performers on the bench, it's disapointing.

Ward has dropped almost every pass in which he has gotten hit by an opponent. That never happens....there just isn't something right with him this year. He doesn't look like he is having fun, maybe his hammy still hurts.

Ward and Roethlisberger are right up there with Cadillac Williams as my top three most disappointing players this year. There are some legitimate reasons to cut Roethlisberger some slack given his offseason, but these guys have been awful so far.

I agree. Its probably just bad luck.

I think Ward has been disappointing for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, he and Ben have really not had enough work together. Ward missed almost all of training camp and didn't play any preseason games. By the time Ward came back, Ben had the appendicitis.

The other reason is that Ward is drawing a fair amount of double coverage because the other Steeler receivers, other than TE Heath Miller, have not been very good.

I think Ward & Ben getting a couple weeks to work together is going to help a lot. On the bad side he is still going to draw double coverage until one or more of the other receivers step it up. Unfortunately I am not sure any of them will.

Was FBG's service warning people to steer away from the Steelers offensive players at all due to these concerns? Were there reports that Ben didn't look good and to drop Ward in your fantasy draft? Or were we told it was not going to be an issue and he had fully recovered? If nothing was said when the information was most pertinent, its kinda hard to go there now and blame lack of reps in training camp and preseason. I have to believe these problems are due to the appendix surgery specifically.
