Hines Ward (1 Viewer)

with the uncertainty regarding Ward and his oldout, if you had to draft right now, where would you rank him among Clayton, Steve Smith, Roy Williams and Burleson for a redraft?
I'd draft him over all of them because he's going to report and he'll be the team's number 1 receiver by far. They have to have Ward to have any chance of winning and who else is Big Ben going to throw to Cedric Wilson???
what if he doesn't though? I don't see a big difference between Ward and these other guys, but there's no threat of any of the others holding out all year and making it a waste of a pick. Unless you're positive he'll be back soon...

HINES HEARD FROM: In an article published on Aug. 3 editions of USA Today Sports Weekly, holdout wide receiver Hines Ward specified his contractual demands to writer Jim Corbett. "I want $16-$18 million guaranteed over the next three years," Ward said. "I was told in a meeting at the end of the year by (head coach) Bill Cowher and (director of football operations) Kevin Colbert that I would receive the highest signing bonus ever (by a receiver)." "I love football, and I don't want to miss practices with my teammates. But the Steelers don't value receivers. And I'm (ticked) off." According to Corbett, Ward is seeking guaranteed money similar to the $17 million guaranteed Marvin Harrison on last year's seven-year, $66 million Do the Hines supporters here think these are reasonable demands?

I think it is unlikely the Steelers are going to give Ward $16-$18 million guaranteed. I could see a $10 million signing bonus spread over 4 or 5 years but no way will they will give him $6 million in the first or even second year. They have too many players they need to sign next year. I think more like $2 million in 2005 and $3 million in 2006. That would give him $12 million guaranteed. If Ward is determined to get $16-$18 million he better be prepared to sit out until Week 10 and finish out his contract and his career with the Steelers.

$16-18 mil guaranteed over the 1st 3 years of a new contract seems reasonable to meAt some point the Steelers have to realize how valuable Hines is to them.He blocks well and he catches the ball. He puts up great numbers in run 1st offense. He has been to the Pro Bowl 4 years with 3 different QB's.None of those QB's are anything to write home about. (Ben might be soon)

This might be one of the rare situations where a player does hold out all year. Move him down your draft a little each week. Unless you hear something positive. I am staying away from this one... He deserves to be paid one of the 5 best WR in the game cause he is. This is a little deeper then most think. He was promised more for a while I believed. He has finally put his foot down and management doesn't believe he's worth it. I guess they will find out.. Going to be interesting..

I'm not intimately involved with the Steelers' cap situation, and as such would not deign to know better than their money guys what is/isn't a prohibitive cap figure to assign to Ward. However, one of the two sides needs to aquiesce - either Ward reporting or the Steelers bringing him for negotiations - before the acrimony builds to the point where it leaves a residue of resentment that carries over to the field.I honestly did not believe it would come to this.

The Steelers have a long standing policy of not negotiating with a hold-out. I really can't see them backing down to a player-- they never have before. Supposedly the team has contacted Ward's agent so maybe they'll work out something, have Ward show up at camp, and sign a contract quickly so both sides can save face.I do wish Hines would shut up, though.

Good. A few posts up I stated I hoped they would do just this.

Does EVERYBODY deserve to be paid as a top 5 WR?Moss

Owens

Harrison

Holt

Chad Johnson

Ward is good but how does he crack that elite group? Ward is 2nd tier. Especially considering his teams offensive mindset. He is the perfect receiver for Pittsburgh but they are NEVER going to pay him top 5 money.

Hines has been my favorite Steeler for years. That said, no way do I pay him that kind of $$. He is not Marvin Harrison and is not in that style of offense. I'd pay a Steeler RB that kind of money but not a receiver.

2. Ward's dropoff last season coincided with a serious dropoff in passing attempts: 533 in 2003 and only 358 in 2004.
And what is the correlation with wins and losses? HW = pig at the trough

Wards put up the #'s and has done more with a run oriented team than most wr's in a west coast system. He'll show up for the season but if a contract isn't worked out he'll be gone next season. The Steelers better pony up. Craig
