Hit on Trent Green (1 Viewer)

Trent Green was knocked out Sunday on a helmet-to-helmet hit by Bengals defensive end Robert Geathers. Here is a description of the hit from ESPN:

On second-and-2 with 4:52 remaining in the third quarter, Green scrambled to his right and started to hook slide. As he did this, Geathers, possibly assisted by a push from behind from Chiefs receiver Eddie Kennison, delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit on Green. What was worse than the hit was the impact of Green's head snapping back on the Arrowhead Stadium grass.
Given all of the cries of cheap shot by Bengals fans last year from Kimo Von Oelhoffen's hit on Carson Palmer, I wonder what the feeling is about the hit yesterday? Were they both cheap shots, neither, or was one a cheap shot and one not? Neither hit drew a flag from the officials.

The only thing that was "cheap" was that, by my eyes, he seemed to lead with his elbow. Otherwise it was clean.

The speed of the game is such that it is almost impossible to pull up every time a QB decides to slide at the last minute. And he was being blocked from behind. Unfortunate, but not a cheap shot.

Personally I didn't think either was cheap but I think the one against Green was more malicious.

Boy, I sure feared worse than a concussion. Not paralysis, but maybe brain damage with the velocity his head hit the ground. Looked horrible.

Not at all. Clean hit. Football is a brutal sport and it was lame to see that happen to TG because he appears to be a great guy but he will be fine...

No flag, but I would expect a fine or suspention. Looked a little cheap IMO. Green was in his hook slide and the Defender put a shoulder pad into his head.

Not cheap at all!

When you are running at that speep how can you tell where your heads are going to end up?

For Christ sake, open your eyes.

"Blocked into him"?

Only an idiot, a true idiot, would think that the tips of Eddie Kennison's fingers -- if they even touched him at all -- was what forced a 300+ lb'er into Trent Green with his helmet leading.

His helmet wasn't leading. He hit Green with his shoulder and made an effort not to hit him with his head.

There should have been a flag on that play.

Illegal block in the back by Kennison.
You're blind.Let me help you out:

If you actually think that Kennison had an impact with his GESTURE, you're more than blind. He practically missed.

If he did touch him (which is difficult to tell), he sure as hell did not force him into Green.

Probably name calling is what got the thread deleted yesterday. Good call on bringing the whole thing down a level.Use your eyes and brain and not emotion. The replay, and camera don't start to show the play until the reciever and Geathers are separated, but I can assure you there was a lot more contact between the two than what you saw on the replay. There was a driving force, both from Geather's momentum and kennison's block which made the path "unalterable" (or is that inalterable?)Anytime someone gets hurt, people want to speculate as to the legality of the hit, especially when it is on a QB. If the league fines or suspends him, then that is their call. I personally don't think the hit was malicious.

Kennison had nothing to do with the play. Still not a dirty hit. Looked like he was trying to cover up a bit after Green started his slide but couldn't avoid him. Trent should have slid about a yard sooner. No way the defender could have layed up completely as late as Trent slid.

1. Trent Green begins his slide

2. Geathers is running upright with his momentum forward

3. Trent Green continues his slide

4. Kennison nudges Geathers high on the back numbers (who already has a lot of momentum)

5. Geathers momentum brings his upper body forward & lower toward Green

BAM!!

It's clean and it wouldn't take much of a block in the back by Kinneson to send Geathers flying. Geathers never looked like he'd peg Green until Kennison gave him the nudge. It wasn't even a nudge, but actually more of a shove my Kennison.

From the video it looks like Green starts his slide, Geathers starts to go to the ground, then Kennison hits him. I still say there will be a fine and Geathers should have seen a flag.

Watching that video it appears his shoulder hit Green in the chest. The guy was already into his hitting mode when Green started to go down. Had Green stayed up it would have been just a regular tackle.

He hit him with his right shoulder pad and was actually starting to turn away from the hit as Green was sliding. There's no helmet to helmet contact. Had the defender pulled up at the last second (if that was even possible), he would have been NAILED by another defender coming full speed the other way that ends up diving over Green.

IMO, it's an unfortunate accident, but I don't see what Geathers could have done differently in a fraction of a second. He was running full speed and while Kennison didn't do much to impede his progress, he probably altered what options he had to choose from in that tenth of a second before he hit Green.

If you look at THIS VIDEO, you can see that Geathers doesn't really try to drive through Green and it seems like he starts to try to go "low" at almost the same exact time Green starts to slide.

So I don't think there should have been a penalty, nor do I think there should be a fine. The defender had no place to go and Green essentially slides in traffic at the last second. Football is not badminton. Sometimes people get hurt.

:goodposting: Having watched it back several times, I can't see how anyone believes this was a dirty hit. As David suggests, IMHO Geather clearly tries to lean away to keep from hitting Green with his helmet. The laws of physics are what they are, a guy Geathers size isn't going to be able to complete render his momentum away in a split second.

Not a cheap shot. Really I don't see how a fine can be issued when he didn't nothing wrong. Not a helmet to helmet. Ive never called Kimo's hit a cheap shot. Very similar things. Kimo wasn't fined correct?

I've replayed it about six times at 1/15th the normal speed. Trent went into his slide just as Geathers leaped towards him for the tackle. You have to remember how fast these guys are moving. I don't think it's possible for Geathers to somehow move out of the way when he's already airborn. As a Trent Green owner, I am bummed about it and hope he recovers...but Trent should have slid much, much sooner.

I don't think that Kimo's hit on Palmer was intended to have the result it did, but I do think it was completely unnecessary to grip the back of Palmer's lower leg and drive his shoulder below the knee. I don't think either of the hits were truly "cheap shots."

As a TG owner (and obviously a Chiefs fan)... :goodposting:

Hopefully this frame by frame video can clear this up. The Cin. defender has already started his movement towards Green before Green begins his slide. Add that with the shove in the back, and this was NOT a cheap shot.

That being said, I hope Trent Green can make a full recovery from this. I also don't feel the need for there to be a fine or a suspension. Sure, it was unfortunate that it ended up this way. But let's say that Green pops up and immediately after this hit, and is fine. Are we even having this discussion?

I think that this begs the question though.

What's the point of the rule for a QB to slide if he is still going to get hit?

Cheap or not, penalty or not ...

Trent Green initiated a slide which is supposed to "protect him". If instead he had not had this rule in place, then he could have run out of bounds with no problem.

In my opinion he made himself much more vulnerable by initiating the slide ...

If you're going to give yourself up, you need to do it before 2 yards in front of the defender that is running at full speed towards you. Let's say he runs a 6 second 40, that gives him .3 seconds to react here. That's not counting the fact that Green is also coming at you. I would say he had less then .1 second to react here.

Sliding works when you do it early enough. Trent Green did not and paid the price, as unfortunate as that price was.

Hey DB,Wearing a seatbelt is supposed to protect you. Driving the speed limit is supposed to protect you. Traffic lights are designed to protect you. Does that mean that every time someone suffers a nasty car injury we should argue against the validity of those three practices?J

IMO, the intent of the slide rule was for QBs to essentially "give themselves up" to avoid being hit. If a QB choses to start sliding a fraction of a second before he gets hit, IMO that's far different than starting to slide 5 yards before a defender hits you. In this case, the defender had already started making his move on the QB. He had no place else to go. If a QB is trying to eke out every last possible yard, even the rules state that he is considered fair game.Just like the rules of the road say that you have to brake for pedestrians. But if someone jumps in front of your car with no notice, is it the driver's fault that someone dashed in front of the car while going even 40 mph?If Green started his slide a step or two earlier none of this would have been up for debate. IMO, he was trying to get everything he could and then last second opted to slide instead. While I hope he has a full and speedy recovery, he did not slide soon enough to warrant no contact. What he SHOULD have done was run out of bounds as he was right next to the sideline.

Very good points. In each of these situations it requires the person at risk doing something for themself (puttin on the seatbelt, stopping at the light, etc...) in order for the precaution to work correctly. Trent Green needed to slide earlier or get out of bounds to remain unharmed. I honestly thought I saw a live death on TV though. It was a scary hit.

Hit may or may not have been "clean"...that could be debated for years to come.

The hooting, hollaring and high-fiving right afterward was a little uncalled for, IMO. Some may say, classless. But, who am I to judge.

After watching the youtube video... it looks like the Cincy defender started to lean forward to make a tackle at the exact instant Trent Green started to slide.

Vicious collision? Yes.

Sad for Trent Green? Yes.

Dirty or malicious? Not in the least.

4. Kennison nudges Geathers high on the back numbers (who already has a lot of momentum)5. Geathers momentum brings his upper body forward & lower toward Green
That is absurd. Kennison pushed him downwards at a 45 degree angle? When Kennisan made contact Geathers shoulders were level and they were both uprite, there is no way Kennisan could have cause that. If you look at the replay Geathers is clearly breaking down to make the tackle, and when Green slides he follows him down to seek contact. If he would have respected the slide he would have by pure momentum gone over the top of Green, just as the fat Samoan wearing 94 does. He intentionally followed him into his slide, this wasnt a matter of wear his momentum carried him, he adjusted his path to make contact with the QB who was sliding. Like it or not, that is a penalty.
