Holmgren: Starting Split End Job Up For Grabs (1 Viewer)

From RotoWorld:

Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren says he doesn't know who his starting split end will be this week.

He'll choose from Nate Burleson, rookie Courtney Taylor, and D.J. Hackett. If Burleson is removed from the starting lineup, he can be removed from 12-team league fantasy rosters. Holmgren indicated he especially wants to give Taylor a look, and it's uncertain whether Hackett is fully healthy yet.

I guess he was not thrilled with the play of Obomanu?

This is the definition of "coach speak"

Holmgren has always been an overrated NFL head coach... and before you start he made so many boneheaded moves last week alone I'm shocked that the print media hasn't put him at the top of the line for the chop block after the season.

Those moves include but are not limited to: punting the ball down 18 with 9 minutes left, not kicking a field goal on 4th down when you're down 10 with 2 minutes left, using his FB on a 4th and 3 on a draw (!) and refusing to go away from an obviously ineffective Shaun Alexander. I have never seen a coach who so completely fails at the ability to adjust a gameplan on the fly as Holmgren yet he continuously receives empty "praise" for riding the coattails of a great organization (the 49ers) and a great QB (Favre).

But even he cannot possibly be stupid enough to start a WR he just picked up on the street a few days ago (Taylor) over two guys he's had in his system for two seasons.

Taylor was a draft pick by the Seahawks this season. I think you're mistaking him for Travis Taylor, who was signed by the Rams this week.

Was Courtney Taylor not signed off the teams practice squad last week or am I misinformed?

I believe he's been on the 53-man roster the whole season.

Being signed off your team's practice squad is a far cry from being picked up off the street. That isn't the case with Courtney Taylor, regardless. He has been with the Seahawks all season and has already played in 3 or 4 games with the team (hasn't done much to this point).

I'm thinking this is a shot at Burleson. Obo was a draft pick/practice squad guy last year and earned a spot on the roster this year and shouldn't ahve too much expectation placed on him yet. Burleson played well in preseason but has been underwhelming in the season, especially given shots to start. It is odd that his name isn't mentioned. It could be taken that Obo will start at flanker, Engram in slot (or vice versa) and the SE job is up for grabs. If that's the case the only reason Hackett won't get it is because of injury. And I can't see how he would possibly be slowed by injury if they are going to bring him back a week before the bye. They are in dire need of a win, but the passing game isn't the problem. Hass put up 360/2 without Hackett or Branch.

Not sure if he was or not, but he was never active for a game until week 2. And hasn't seen any real time even with Hackett and Branch out. But like someone else said, being brought up from the practice squad is nowhere near being brought in from the street.

That's why I was surprised. I know Obo had a few drops but Burleson was the one who quit on his route that lead to Hass' interception. I guess I just assumed that the flanker spot was Engram's until Branch returned.

No question. That game was a disgrace - - one of the poorest jobs of coaching I've seen in a while. There were a handful of lousy coaching performances last week, but Holmgren's took the cake.

Agreed, I thought Obomanu clearly outplayed Burleson.

From what I saw Sunday night here's the WR breakdown:

Base Offense

Flanker-Engram

Split End-Burleson

3-WR Set

Flanker-Obamanu

Split End-Burleson

Slot-Engram

Obamanu appeared to be working in the flanker spot in those 3-WR sets which may be why he isn't mentioned in this report about the starting split end job. Engram's spot as the starting flanker and slot WR in 3-WR sets is locked with Branch out. What needs to be determined is who starts at split end? My guess is it will be Burleson or Hackett, depending on his health. Obamanu could still remain on the field in 3-WR sets with Hackett and Burleson rotating at split end and Engram in the slot.

The question then becomes: Will Obamanu bump anyone from 4-WR sets once Branch returns as the starting flanker? Or will Holmgren put Hackett and Burleson on the field with Branch and Engram?

Clearly no reason for Obo to be left out of the roster so it's an assumption I'm making that he's starting. As for Engram, he obviously showed he can produce at flanker but is just so incredibly good in the slot it seems natural to have him there whenever possible. He also went to the slot when the team was in 3 or 4 WR sets so even if Obo starts in the slot, Engram will play from there plenty. In the last 2 years, Hackett has played at all 3 spots I believe covering for injuries. Spent most of his time in the slot for Engram last year.

Burleson has scored a TD three out of four weeks.
And he's dropped several key passes and failed to get open repeatedly. It's not always about stats, moving the chains is as important as who catches the final pass of a drive. He has been serviceable but not spectacular thus far. Would've been a huge goat against Cinci if he hadn't caught his TD on a great pass from Hass.

Burleson is keeping the seat warm for Hackett and Branch to return from injuries. That said calling him out makes absolutely no sense. If Holmgren wants to put the blame for a terrible gameplan and a pathetic performance against the Saints on Nate's shoulders he's a bigger idiot that I previously thought

From Seahwk Insider

WR D.J. Hackett (ankle) was dressed but did not take part in team drills, working in the less dangerous individual drills.

what is the scouting report on Hackett? Is his forte his speed, route-running, play making or ability to get injured

Does anyone believe Hackett has a good chance to produce the latter half of the season? FBG was huge on this guy in pre-season, but then he got hurt. He's available on the WW in just about all of my leagues.

Oh yeah.... he is firmly in the dog house.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports Sehawks WR D.J. Hackett (ankle) practiced for the first time since spraining his right ankle in the regular-season opener. Sort of. Hackett took part in the early individual drills, but then watched the team portions of practice. How much he plays Sunday – and if he plays against the Rams – will be determined by how much Hackett is able to do the rest of the week. "We'll have to wait and see how it feels once we get closer to the game," Hackett said. In his continued absence, WR Nate Burleson continued to be the split end, although WR Courtney Taylor also got a lot of reps – and made a lot of catches. WR Bobby Engram will start at flanker against the Rams because WR Deion Branch (foot) is out at least one more week with a sprained foot. Holmgren didn't exactly offer a ringing endorsement of Burleson when asked about his progress in the grasping the nuances of the passing game. "Nate's had his moments, a little like our offensive team. We've had our moments and we've had some things where I didn't like it so much," Holmgren said. "He's a talented man, I'll stick with that. He has a lot of talent. Now, he's got to discipline himself to do it kind of the way we want it done all of the time. Be a little more consistent that way. But he's a try-hard guy, too. I want to be a little more disciplined in that part of our game."

Nice find. No mention again of Obomanu so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that he'll play flanker in 3 WR sets with Engram sliding to the slot as he did last week. It would be nice to know if he took reps there (flanker) but the guy who took over the blog for Sando is a poor substitute.OC Haskell also said that HAckett was very sore after his limited practice (limited practice again today) and wouldn't say so, but based on the blog it seems like it's doubtful that Hackett will in fact play this week. Said they'd have to wait and see how he feels tomorrow before making a call on it. If he's still this sore it makes absolutely zero sense to rush him back when they have a bye next week.

If he's healthy yes.

Is Courtney Taylor worth a p/up in large roster dynasty leagues???
I have no experience with dynasty leagues but he's the 6th WR when everyone is healthy and Hackett is the only WR not signed for at least 2 more years.
:bag: Excellent analysis with the contract angle. Not bad for an non-Dynasty player :lmao: .Perhaps you're ready to give Dynasty a shot? Really fills that void from Feb-July....
