Four TV “Matrix” Setup : Need opinions & guidance please!

Hey all!

Looking at building a 4 television “matrix” television wall in the living room of our new home.

- Anyone done one? Glad? Regret? Lessons learned?

- ISO suggestions on how to send live TV feeds to the Matrix controller. I was thinking four FireTV 4K Sticks streaming from YouTubeTV ($19.99 for unlimited feeds @ home).

- Would love guidance on best remote setups to control the system.

Current Gear List (nothing purchased yet).

TVs :
- Four TCL Class W6 TV’s.
Not sure on 55” or 65” yet. Need to measure. Tiny bezel and VESA mount compatible. May need to mount top 2 inverted?

Matrix Controller (choosing):
- Monoprice Blackbird 4K 4x4
- Avico 4x4 4K Matrix Switch

Thoughts? Suggestions? I’m new to this.

Mounts:

I assume (given the site we’re on) you’ll be doing this for sports?

I don’t have a 4x matrix, but I do have a 3 tv setup. Large 65” in the middle, flanked by smaller TVs on the sides that can be easily moved (really only used during football season). More than that and you don’t really have a “main” screen for watching a movie.

On football Sundays I have redzone on main tv, and the fox and cbs local feeds on the others.

Have to see if you can find one to look at in person, but the laser projectors are much better in light these days.

Is 85" the biggest practical due to quality of picture? I am thinking I am going to want 100" (4-50" individual screens)

After peeling back the layers and not feeling 100% comfortable with what I was seeing on the matrix front I said **** it… single screen.

But having seen my pop’s 85” set this past week, I just didn’t think it would be what I was looking for. Then I stumbled into the world of 100” LEDs and frankly I was surprised with what was out there at “reasonable” price points.

As far as formatting to get the four separate feeds to quarter up the screen for four games, what do you need for that aspect? Looking at the specs on the TV it didn't really address that (or maybe it did but I am not smart enough to understand it).

From some more googling:

4 TVs: They use programable HDMI switches that basically have one cable running to the TV for four "matrix" pictures, a game on each tv. And a second cable for one game as a "picture wall".

1TV: There are different software's to divide the TV up and distribute different video feeds to different quadrants. Some sell a controller devise that converts different feeds and makes them available to the network. NetPlay seems interesting because it used Android devices (firestick) to receive the feeds. But I still think you ought to be able to do this all on a HTPC.

I'd go the 1TV route for sure though unless the wall is just too big for the largest TVs out there.

Only certain 2023 Samsung TVs support the Multi View feature. The total number of screens displayed simultaneously will also depend on the model. You can check the list below for details:

Correct. Don't get a projector if picture quality is a concern and you'll be watching during the day with limited light control.

ETA - When I say picture quality is a concern, I'm talking about noticing black levels and when dark scenes look washed out. If that's something you don't ever notice and are drawn to bright pictures, then perhaps a short throw projector is an option.

This has all been installed and I’m very very happy. The TCL is a BEAST.

Walmart offers install for $79 through Hello Tech. This was the best $80 I ever spent. No way I could hang this solo. The mount hit 2 studs with two bolts each plus the guy put two 130lb HD Lag Bolts in. Hopefully that will hold up.

Pic is gorgous. Very bright and sharp. VERY Good blacks. Not seeing any smearing in action sequences. Just a damn good, very huge TV.

Note: My HDMI cable isn’t holding up to the 4K @ 60fps so I’ve got an ultra high speed one coming today that is supposedly 8k @ 60fps / 4K @ 120fps so fingers crossed that fixes the issue.

You’re right in that I’ve got the room in the amp for it. I definitely believe you that a second sub fills out the low end well (not that this sub lacks too badly).

However finding space to discretely stash another 12” sub is going to be next to impossible. This is in our Primary living space. While it’s big (~35x25ish) it’s wide open and any speakers are very visible.

If I went dual sub I’d prob switch to two smaller ones, maybe?

I was curious on that but I THINK it may be a non issue with some early listening.

Will learn more tonight with Gravity and or Top Gun Maverick tonight to put the Atmos tops through thier paces.

Went SVS for the 3 way setup and excellent lateral sound dispersion as we will have a couple seats that will be notably off axis and the Klipsch RP centers have pronounced DB Drop off axis per that Erin dude on YouTube.

Setup as it sits now. Gotta clean up some wires, move sub to corner, and getting a new console to hide errythang…. But we’re in the ballpark now.

Update: Just upgraded to a 5.1.4 Atmos system and holy **** it's great.

Upgraded the Sub from an old Klipsch KSW-12 to an RSL Speedwoofer 12s. Good lord this thing is a ****ing MONSTER. Yes, it's big. Very big. But using REW software and a MiniDSP calibrated mic, I'm seeing fairly flat dispersion down to 13hz which is just stupid. Forget SVS, Hu and whatnot... these guys are kings of the sub $1000 sub world right now. If you need something smaller, their Speedwoofer 10S MkII is considered among the gold standards of 10" subs. Seriously...

Had to upgrade the AVR to a Pioneer Elite 9.2 VSX-LX305 to get the full 9 channel setup. Aside from an eARC dispute between it and the QLED, love this thing. Killer interface and the DIRAC Live calibration will absolutely dial this thing in with room correction. Haven't had a chance to run it just yet but this weekend.

Could not get clearance from the wife on more visible speakers, so went in-cieling for the 4 atmos channels and the rear surrounds. All 6 have near flush mount magnetic grills that are paintable to match the ceiling.

REAR SURROUNDS: Went with RSL C34E MkII for their high performance and angled baffle design allowing me to properly stage the sound.

ATMOS (4 Channel): Everything I read indicated 4 channels of Atmos is a game changer with allowing front-back overhead movement on the soundstage. Opted here for Monoprice Alpha 6.5s since Atmos doesn't require a lot of oomph. That said, these are REALLY nice speakers at a phenomenal price.

BLURAY UHD > Streaming sucks for quailty... so opted to for the Sony UBP-X800 Mk2 UHD BluRay player. They're all a bit clunky and slow, but the image quailty is quite literally night and day vs streaming.

Just broke out Gravity to test it out and holy ****.... YES! 4 channel Atmos is THE WAY. Could not be happier. The ceiling mounted Rear Surrounds are not ideal but imaging works just fine.

Honestly... having just seen Interstellar in IMAX this past week, I'll gladly prefer my home setup now... superior picture quality and audio. The size of IMAX is impressive but doesn't overcome the lackluster image quality and sound IMO.

I'm officially done... this is the setup for me. Highly recommend.
