Professor allowed us to choose any study for a quantitative critique. So I stumbled across this one:

Slugger or Slacker: A Sabermetric Assessment of Free Agency on Major League Baseball Player Performance by Brent Estes and got the OK.

What a sweet dissertation- he interviewed Bill James, Sandy Alderson, Tim Purpura, and Scott Proefrock. Basically using a couple business theories (Equity and Expectancy) to determine how free agency affects performance.

First dissertation I can actually read and somewhat enjoy.

It's pretty good. The back half has some interesting conclusions. There's some statistically significant slacking going on after free agency scores. It's funny though, reading through most of the thing, I'm left with a feeling that traditional assessment is even more important than I thought. I think it was Purpura saying that they assess 6 tools instead of 5-the sixth being intangible makeup.
