Was it an Asian Pear? They aren't soft, though. But the taste is fantastic. I only see them at the supermarket a few times a year. They're great for cooking with, too.

I bought some asian pears this weekend. The initial taste is fantastic but they had a terrible aftertaste. Wouldn't purchase again.

Nope, wasn't an Asian Pear. I'll definitely give one of those a try, though. Next time I go to that particular supermarket I'll also make sure to get that name.
 
A few years back while I was still single, I grabbed an assortment of apples from the grocery store in the fall to try out the various kinds of apples. Honeycrisp won hands down.

Then I never saw them again until I was married and visiting my wife's family in Michigan. We stopped at a local farm and they had bags and bags of them. I was in heaven.

Fortunately, they've shown up at the local grocers again this year.

It becomes more apparent to me everyday why so many people like American Idol and why 2 and a Half Men is the top rated sitcom on tv. People just have no standards anymore. They're excited by mediocrity. It's a good eating apple that's pretty much on par with other top eating apples. Nothing more, nothing less.

This thread led to me to a few different grocery stores until I found this apple. I found them last night and I am about to have one with lunch...will report back :thumbup:

Maybe it was the quality of your Honey Crisp. It must be getting near the end of Honey Crisp season because of the last 3 I picked up, 2 were still tasty, but the texture was different, somewhat sandy, and it wasn't as good as the others. The 3rd one was perfect.

:hophead: The texture was very crisp. Maybe the taste was a bit different or something, but it still just tasted like a good apple.
 
I'm offically on board. I will be heading back to the store to make hubby a homemade apple pie tonight :kicksrock:

GBHoneycrisp apples! Easily one of the best apples I've ever had.

BTW, they were 1.99/lb here in Alabama.

 
Pops is good people, so if he's vouching for a fruit, it's good enough for me. I bought a half dozen yesterday at our local Whole Foods.

Best. Apple. Evah. Wow....

 
I went back and bought a dozen over the weekend at $1.39 lb. Prices are dropping which is good b/c I'm on board with 2 of these a day!

 
HUGE honeycrisps starting showing up at the safeway near work last week. By huge I mean softball+ size. They still taste good though.

 
I'm still getting these at the local Super Target. I think these are from Washington. If they keep stocking them, I'll keep buying them. Even at $2.29/lb.

 
Just finished eating a very tasty Braeburn when I remembered this thread. Couldn't recall the name.

Now officially the state fruit in Minnesota ... we have three orchard sin our area.

Planted two 6-8' trees in the yard last year ... likely won't be fruitful until next year.

 
I picked up a 5lbs bag from the orchard last weekend (1.88/lb). Finishing the last few this morning. These were smaller, and a little less flavorful than last year (yes I know "blasphemy"!).

Looking forward to the next several weeks.

Funny that this trhead got bumped as I was just looking into this the other day. I heard from our local produce manager that it may be a late season this year due to the heavy flooding in May and June. I wasn't planning on the best part of the crop until at least early October anyway. Honeycrisp apples' harvest season ranges from September 15 to October 10 in much of the upper midwest.
 
I just got the first bag two days ago at one of the chain grocery stores here in Cincy. There was joy throughout the land. I love these damn apples.

Do these apples freeze well? I'm thinking about buying a ####load of them, cutting them into chunks and then freezing them ... in addition to eating as many as I possibly can over the next three months or so.

I'm so glad it is apple season again...I haven't had a good honeycrisp in months!!! Went to an apple orchard last weekend here in Ohio and got 1/2 a peck for $20! I can't wait to start using them in some yummy fall desserts!
 
Going for $2.49 a pound at the Giant I stop at on my way to work and I am gladly paying that everyday for one. I'm like a junkie, I admit sometimes I rip the little sticker off and at the self checkout i enter it as a cheaper Gala or some other type.

Yeah, they will show up eventually. The safeway near my work in foster city / san mateo hasn't gotten them in yet, though they've been assigned a checkout code, which, according to the checkout lady, means they should be here within a week or 2.Yes, I am a honeycrisp :goodposting:
 
Just bought a half peck at our local orchard. First honeycrisp for me. They are very good. Not sure they are any better than pink lady apples. 1a & 1b for me.

 
OK, the more I eat these the more I like them. Called the local orchard and they said they would probably only have them for the next couple of days, so I'll be stopping later to get some more.

If you like them, better get some quick. The good thing is that you can buy a bunch and they'll be good for a while. From the website: "Honeycrisp fruit has shown excellent storage characteristics. The outstanding flavor and texture can be maintained for at least six months in refrigerated storage without atmosphere modification."
