What shocks me most is that no other team offered him something better. I mean, the guy is coming off a season where he hit .267/.338/.541 with 20 HRs in 98 games. Granted his defense isn't the worlds best, but still, he wasn't going to break the bank for a team either. I'm really wondering how/why no other team was interested?!? Happy, but curious.
Probably because he's not very good.career 224 average vs rhpatrocious fielderMuch in the same vein of Wily Mo PenaPlus, he's 30 years old, not as if there is much break out chance. He's a right handed bat, and probably nothing more than a bench player. Typical AAAA player

Nothing like Willy Mo Pena. His fielding is abysmal, but he is a very valuable hitter. Had an .879 OPS last year, and, most impressive, a .914 OPS v. lefties. The Reds, and many teams for that matter could use his bat in a platoon. Definitely think he is more of an AL player though, as a team can put him at DH.

I wish the Yankees would sign him especially if he is getting a minor league deal. He would be perfect in a platoon with the likes of Gardner, Winn, Granderson, and/or Johnson.

You guys are nutsRed Sox tried this same deal with him. Figured he would be a great right handed bat off the bench, or split time at DH with Ortiz and Drew in RF.Didn't work. Because he, like Jonny Gomes, are just no good.

20 HRs off the bench (play him vs situational lefties) sounds good to me :goodposting:

Has anyone heard anything about the Yankees looking at Conor Jackson? I hope not but I have heard rumours.

Haven't heard that at all......BUT please let them take him away and let Parra get a full year of ABJackson = Kotchman, nice looking, nice glove, can't hit enough to be serious

Didn't Jackson have some illness last year? I always thought he was a solid hitter. Not a 30 homer guy, but a player who could hit for a solid average.

Yes he had Valley fever. If Parra can improve his CF defense I could see him in for Chris Young. Para is a great 4th OF for now.

M's signed Garko to a 1 yr, 550k deal. I think its safe to say M's had the best offseason in baseball
Far and away, you're right. In other news (and I can barely control my excitement...honest!) the Reds were somehow able to find someone to take Tavares off their hands! :)

What an awesome day for Reds fans!

and in related news, Brian Sabean is an idiot
Garko's much better suited to the AL, he's not much of a fielder. He'll be a very nice and cost-effective platoon DH.
Garko does have some experience at Catcher if I'm not mistaken. He's pretty versatile for the cost. Not a guy that's going to ever carry you, but good to have around.

Twinkies sign O-Dog. Good signing for them w/ it being a 1 yr deal. Type A if he's not moved mid season (depending on if they're in it @ the break, etc). Not to mention it moves Punto off of 2B which will help them too.

Pretty sure they waived offering arbitration if he's a Type A as part of the agreement.

Exactly the kind of player that the Twins seem to get the most out of.

Mariners make it official that Bedard is back with the team. If he gets healthy and is ready to give them 15-20 starts down the stretch, look out....

Felix, Lee, and Bedard is a pretty formidable 1-2-3 combo.

I look at Bedard as a $1.5m lottery ticket. Best case scenario is we get a healthy second half out of him, and that's if everything goes right. As a Mariners fan, I'm conditioned to not expect the best case scenario with Erik Bedard. I would be completely, absolutely, ecstatic if he was healthy enough to go 6 at full strength come playoff time. Our pen should be pretty fresh after two starts of Felix/Lee, and as much as Bedard isn't that popular around here, the guy has nasty stuff when he's healthy. Hell, the last two years when he wasn't healthy his FIP was quite respectable. I love this signing. It's exactly what I was hoping for, as I don't think there's any available FA left that has the potential to be as big of a difference maker come playoff time. I think the Mariners have a decent shot at making the playoffs, but with our offense we're going to need to shut teams down to win a few series. If Bedard somehow gets healthy for the playoffs, I would most certainly not want my team to face Felix/Lee/Bedard in any sort of series, much less where they may be the only pitchers you face.Being a Mariners fan is suddenly awesome.

No one knows what the Jays rotation will really look like this season. They have something like 16 starting pitchers fighting for 5 (or 6?) spots in training camp. They're almost all under 30, half of them are coming off major arm/shoulder injuries and none of them have proven anything. That said, I don't think anyone is afraid of coming into Toronto to face any of these guys. It's really ridiculous when you look at it but they have so many young arms, you'd hope maybe a couple pan out.- Ricky Romero (career 13-9), 25 years old- Shawn Marcum - TJ surgery in 08, should be back for training camp (career 24-17), 28 years old- Brandon Morrow has never been able to stay off the DL, or start more than 10 games. (career 8-12), 25 years old- Marc Rzepczynski (career 2-4), 24 years old- Brett Cecil (career 7-3), 23 years old- Dustin McGowan - labrum and ACL surgeries, (career 20-22), 27 years old- Brian Tallet (career 14-17), will be on staff, just a matter of whether he starts or is in bullpen, 32 years old- Scott Richmond (career 9-14), 30 years old, i- Jesse Litsch - coming off TJ surgery, won't be ready to start the year (career 20-19), 24 years old- Casey Janssen - coming off labrum surgery, (career 10-17) - could be in bullpen, 28 years old- Merkin Valdez has had TJ surgery. (career 3-1), 28 years old- Shawn Hill has had TJ surgery twice. (career 8-16), 28 years old- Kyle Drabek has had TJ surgery, 22 years old- Zach Jackson (career 4-5), 26 years old- David Purcey (career 4-9), former 1st rd pick is out of options, may get a shot - 27 years old
LOL Eveland is 26, also coming off an injury, he'll fit in perfectly with this cluster#### of possible starters.

Romero, Marcum, Rzepcynski, Cecil, Richmond to startTallet first early season replacement option.Morrow belongs in the pen w/Janssen and Eveland.Shawn Hill and Purcey depend on how the above guys do in Spring Training, if all of the above stays intact (yea, right) they're gone.Valdez and Jackson are long shots, at best.Drabek back to the minors.McGowan and Litsch replace injured guys in-season.Close?

Yankees sign Marcus Thames to minor league deal. I know its not much but what a great move IMO!
 Nice platoon with Granderson should they choose to go that route. Anybody with insight as to how Thames is in the field? I know he was mostly a DH but is he a butcher out there?

Complete butcher. He can't play CF either.Fielding Bible has him as -26.7 as a LF last year. -12.2 for his career. He doesnt have enough games in RF to draw any conclusions, and he has zero games in CF.

Gotcha.I think the Thames signing is decent. But he seems more like an end of the bench guy than a platoon LF'er who will make 30-40 starts a year. I guess it depends on how terrible his defense really is (which seems very terrible). Granderson sure can't hit lefties, but his defense is superb and Thames needs to play at least a passable LF for it to be worth it to take Granderson out of the field.

I see it the same way. Granderson and/or Gardner will sit out against the tough lefties. Plus, games where Thames starts he'll probably only have to play the field 6 or 7 innings and they can bring in Granderson, Gardner, or Winn to play defense. Seriously love the bench Cash put together this year.
