StubHub, one of the major ticket resellers on the Internet, said Tuesday that the Chicago Bears-Green Bay Packers game at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday is the top-selling NFL conference championship game in company history.

from the Journal Sentinal

Joellen Ferrer, a StubHub spokeswoman, said the company now expects the Bears-Packers game to be the fourth-best selling NFL game in its history. Three different Super Bowls sold more tickets.

Because it's easy for the away team's fans to make the trip.

No surprise.

I'm trying to think of a Championship game that would possibly top it. Dallas vs an NFCE foe? Dallas vs GB? Pitt vs Cle?

None of those games matchup 2 top fanbases, with a natural rivalry.

if a reseller is expecting this wouldn't that mean that more people with tickets want to resell them? Hardly a guage of extreme intrest/fandom.

You don't understand how this works then if you think that way.

My first thought too. Turns out its been 10, but who knew if it back in 2002? I'll bet another big game next year passes as it becomes a more common way to buy out of town tickets.

Have you seen some of the prices on those tickets? 1-2k per seat in the lower level, 500-1k in the 400 level. It's unreal the prices people are asking and actually GETTING people to pay.

Not unreal.

When you factor in the length of the rivalry and that they haven't played each other in the playoffs in 70 years, this is a once in a lifetime event.

Quite frankly, 1K-2K for lower level seats is surprisingly low with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.

You saw how crazy the press and fans were for the Jets Pats rivalry last weekIf we assume the NYJ and Pats have been around 50? years playing each other two times a season, Pack and Bears 70? 80? and playing each other and that after 130 years of games these rivalries are equally fierce....can you compare the two for me please?

You said there's more to it above well, whatcha got?

I don't feel like looking this up but I know every bears and packers game regardless of who they are playing is sold out within hours of tickets going on sale in the summer. I think that may be the same for the Patriots, but I'm pretty sure it isnt the case for the Jets. Season tickets for Bears have at least a 5 year wait, Packers god knows how long. Again, not sure on Pats, but believe you can buy Jets with no wait.

its far before the history of stubhub and they weren't divisional foes but..............the niners/cowboys 3straight battles for supremacy in the 90's prolly was a hot ticket.

Not to mention, the conference championships are arguably more enjoyable than the Super Bowl since they aren't played at a neutral site and completely marred by corporate pandering. I'll never get over my horrific decision to pass on tickets to last year's NFC championship :wall:

Despite it being a once in a lifetime event, the economy has pushed ticket prices down as a whole this year. I got $750 a piece for a pair of Championship game tickets against the Saints in 2006. Price is about the same for same tickets, maybe even slightly lower, despite it being a much bigger game. People aren't tossing money around for entertainment like they did a few years ago.

In Chicago, only a Cubs v. White Sox World Series could ever compare. Probably not the whole series, but a Game 7 would probably surpass Bears-Packers.

I paid $720 apiece for 2 grandstand (400 level) tickets, even though they're on the 50. And I still think it is a good deal. Can't wait. Once in a lifetime game, here.

Part of the equation here is that Soldier Field has the smallest capacity of any NFL stadium.
Not so sure. For the game last week, tickets were available for just over face value despite it being a playoff game and you had talking heads on the radio suggesting that people just weren't interested in going to games in the cold when the TV experience has caught up so much. This has more to do with the game than the stadium.

Sure, of course it has more to do with the matchup, but the size of the stadium is still part of it. If they had a 90,000-seat stadium, tickets would be slightly less. Not 50% less or even 25% less, but probably at least a few % less.

I don't know the Jets either. Giants always had this long waiting list. There's a new stadium with PSLs and....yeah I don't know.OK So they are always sold out so this was a chance for people that usually can't go to buy tickets (I guess) that the regulars couldn't afford to attend.

There's one thing. What else? There's gotta be a bunch more if these tix are so much $.

I see "once in a lifetime" below. That kinda throws me. I was shocked to see it never happens, so I do understand the logic. For whatever reason, even though it's never happened I expect these two to play again in the playoffs maybe even next year and the next 2-3 years. But OK OK fans see it as once in a lifetime, that's gotta be worth a ton of $ right there.

I will never forget attending a game in below zero weather in Buffalo, it surely isn't warm for this game. Since we are talking about all these things affecting price-does the bitter cold affect things for this game? bring the price down at all?

The only one i think would top it MIGHT be Dallas v Washington.
Several of the players from the 1982 Super Bowl XVII-winning Redskins team have said that the NFC Championship win over the Cowboys at RFK was bigger than the Super Bowl for them. And from what I can remember of my early childhood as a Skins fan, I believe them. It's going to be a phenomenal game on Sunday. That said, Stubhub has really only been a popular site for a couple years. The thread title is a bit misleading, no?

The Packers and Bears fanbases have proven to be THE most passionate in the NFL over the years (along with the Steelers). My co-worker was with the NFL execs on Sunday in Chicago...they were partying like rock-stars.

From licensed sales...Jets and Pats are usually bottom 6 of the top 10...but GB and Chi are always top 4 along with Pitt and Dallas. I don't think ticket sales or TV ratings will tell you anything different.ETA some insight on how the NFL front office felt last weekend. They were pulling for the Jets, so Pitt would host the AFCC.

for some reason the first thing that came to mind for me was the Monday night game between the Dolphins and the Bears....I have a feeling that was a pretty hot ticket at the time......

I know the (KC) Montana vs. Elway game was also a tough ticket....

not really basing this on prices, etc....but more on the "would love to go see that one"....

Packer tickets don't go on sale. Outside of a lottery they have for I believe residents of the county the stadium is in, everything is season tickets. Probably 15 years ago I called their ticket office to see when single game tickets went on sale, and they literally laughed at me. When you do go to Lambeau, the security can be pretty mean. And whenever you see a fan getting taken out in handcuffs the stadium cheers - it was explained to me that it's because that means the waitlist is going to move.Bears tickets are sold out within minutes, not hours. Every year I try and get extras - I was stupid enough to try and get the Packers game this year which probably cost me some tickets to another more realistic game. Normally I skip it, but it was MNF this year so I figured I'd pray for a miracle. 1 minute after on sale, there's no matches. I did get 4 nice sideline seats for the Eagles game this year though. But within 5 minutes, the entire season is gone.

discussing passion it's just easier to say two of. There's just no barometer and some teams (Eagles come to mind) have some fans whose passion borders on obsession.I don't believe the ETA comment. Sorry but NYC is the media capital of the world. I'd buy that they didn't care re Pit or NYC but let's not pretend the NFL doesn't go out of it's way to act like the Jets and Giants are from NYC or that there aren't TONS more people in NYC for them to sell to.Sometime people think the hype and all with a Supe is excessive. Whenever the Superbowl is in NYC, the NFL will be redefining excess. You can absolutely plan on that.

there's so much about how the Pack are run that's interesting. Thanks

Also, realize that the vast majority of the stadium - everything outside of end zone 300's and the 400's are PSL seats. The fans had to cough up anything ranging from $1k to $4.5k per seat for the right to buy tickets there when new Soldier was built. Those PSL's probably go for about 4-5 times the original price on the open market these days when sold. I once saw 4 seats on the media deck (200's on home side), 50 yard line row 2 sell for something like 120 or 130K. That was in 2006.

So all that said, these prices aren't too terrible. The vast majority of people in the stadium had to cough up big money to get the seats, and they surely aren't going to sell you the tickets to the biggest game that's ever happened there without expecting to get a handsome return on it.

Unless of course one of them season ticket holders happened to be your best man, and you his, in which case, you got a chance to be in a lottery for a ticket at basically face value....and won.

See y'all Sunday - I'll be the one in the Cutler jersey...next to the guy in the Payton jersey. :2cents:

My company has a suite on the lower level at the 50 yard line. I could go for free (life-long Bears fan), but I can't get any of my lame-### clients to go.

And Richard Dent and Otis Wilson willl be there too.

If you pass through the South Lot by where McCormick is, I'll be the guy tossing around a Bears Nerf ball shouting - "Hey Cutler, you're open!!!" "Yo Payton, you're open!!!!". Make sure your hands are free. :)

One barometer is how teams are supported when they aren't playing well. The Jets and Pats are not even on the same planet as the Packers and Bears in this measure of passion.

Don't know what to tell you. A good friend was with them pre-game, during the game, and post-game in Chicago. Obviously not Goodell, but several highups. I think they fell the ratings will be the largest ever either way, the ticket demand will be the same either way, and licensed sales will be MUCH larger with the Steelers, Packers, and Bears. Not sure what else they care about for this particular event.I'm honestly surprised you are so adamant about this. I thought most understood how the GB and Chi fanbases rank.

Do they guarantee that the tickets sold there are authentic? I'd hate to drop that kind of cash only to show up for the game and find out you bough a counterfeit.

Yeah, they have a "fanprotect guarantee". Money isn't released to seller until you confirm tickets are good, and there's a number to call if you have a problem on gameday.

OK, good. Local news was talking to a Pgh cabbie and he was saying how he's seen quite a few folks get burned with one of the online ticket exchanges. Can't recall exactly which one he was talking about.

Definately this year considering Dallas has the SB so the game would obviously be about as big as it could be for Dallas. But those dreams went out the window a long long time ago. This is a natural rivalry between 2 teams that have history. They haven't played against each other in the playoffs since before Super Bowl 1, Chicago only holds so many fans so the tickets are just a little bit rarer, although things play a part in it.

Bri - had a chance to talk indepth with my co-worker this morning...and you are right to a degree.

Turns out the NFL was pulling for the Jets...and they are pulling for them again this weekend. Considering that Pitt has won the SB twice in the last 5 years...and it would be the first in 40-ish for the Jets....they will be a better result for the league.

Their wishlist is:

#1 - Bears (by far)

#2 - Packers

#3 - Jets (as of now...if NY really explodes after a AFC win, they could jump to #2)

#4 - Steelers

In the end...there is really no bad result here. It's just a question how big it can get.
