Houston Texans forever - goodbye Slowik, hello Nick Caley (5 Viewers)

Defensive end Will Anderson Jr. (ankle) and cornerback Kamari Lassiter (concussion) practiced on Thursday, a crucial one determining a player’s weekend availability.

Anderson’s position mate Denico Autry did not, missing his second consecutive practice this week with knee and oblique injuries. Neither did defensive tackle Folorunso Fatukasi, who missed Monday night’s 34-10 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

What a pathetic display on offense. Someone take me off the ledge but I feel those BOB led AFC South championship teams may have had a better chance in the playoffs. I'd even consider bringing Jack Easterby back and letting him try his hand at play calling. It can't get much worse.

Texans lose defensive back Jalen Pitre for several weeks with chest injury
Partial pec tear. Still could mean surgery down the line and lost for the season but the team will wait and see.

Given how he plays, I'd find it hard to see him back this season unless he can play through pain. But that seems to be the kind of pain to protect him from so he doesn't make it worse.

Tennessee’s linebackers made it a point of emphasis to take away Mixon’s cutback lanes and, in doing so, took away his explosive runs.
...
Patterson tried to leave his double-team to get Murray, but the speedy linebacker beat the lineman to the tackle spot to make the play. The center said the strategy was unlike what the Titans had shown on film, and Houston's blockers struggled to adjust.

“I think a part of (the ineffective run game) was the way the linebackers played today. They played a little different than we saw,” Patterson said. “Instead of playing over the top, they were playing back door on a lot of the runs. So we’ve just got to be on it and expect different looks and just execute at the end of the day.”

But Ryans said there was a simple solution to the linebackers playing back door: Run through the front door.

“If we want to say they’re taking away the cutback, then you continue to press the ball outside,” Ryans said. “We just have to be instinctive and play off of what we’re seeing.”

Mixon’s instincts on cutbacks have mostly proven correct this season. But those instincts have perhaps been triggered too often of late, and the Titans defense used its own instincts to prevent the cutbacks. A commitment to following the zone would have likely paid dividends for the running back, but with the play setting up similarly to the touchdown against the Cowboys, Mixon’s impulse told him to chart the same path. Unfortunately, he took a course straight to Murray and Key, netting a short gain instead of an explosive play.

While Ryans’ answer was straightforward, Mixon’s attempts to push outside were anything but. When trying to get around the perimeter, he often met Titans defenders who either forced a cutback wrapped up by their second level or brought him down before he turned the elusive corner.

Every time I read something a Texans' offensive lineman says it leads to the conclusion many of our fans have been saying most of the season: They're poorly coached and second half adjustments are lacking and woefully ineffective. Slowik is in over his head and they can't coach OL play worth a damn.

Yeah it reads like "they out maneuvered/outcoached us and we didn't know what to do."

Houston Texans will be without Foley Fatukasi and Jalen Pitre against Jacksonville Jaguars.

Defensive ends Will Anderson Jr. and Denico Autry carry no injury designations into the weekend and will play, according to the team’s official injury report. Both were held out of Wednesday’s practice with lingering injuries but participated the past two days.

NBC announced Thursday that the Texans' road game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, Dec. 21, will include an alternate “EA Sports Madden NFL Cast” presentation of the game that will exclusively stream on Peacock, It will be the first alternate telecast on NBC’s streaming service.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is on track to make his return to the lineup Sunday against Houston after missing the past two games with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder.

Houston Texans linebacker Christian Harris and guard Kenyon Green returned to practice Monday, opening their 21-day window to be added back to the roster.

Harris' return is a long time coming. He suffered a calf injury before training camp, then re-injured it upon his return a few weeks later. He has not practiced with the team since training camp.

It comes at the perfect time, too.

The Texans will be without linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair for the next three games. Al-Shaair was suspended for his hit against Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence during the Dec. 1 win at Jacksonville.

It’s unclear if Harris will return Sunday when the Texans take on the Dolphins, but it seems that there’s a chance. The Texans will evaluate Harris throughout the practice week and see how his body responds.
...
Harris, theoretically, could play as soon as Sunday. However, the Texans officially have 21 days from Monday to add Green or Harris back to the roster. At the end of the 21 days, the Texans must either add them to the roster or place them on injured reserve.

Houston Texans starting left guard Juice Scruggs is expected to miss at least two weeks with a foot injury, a source with knowledge of the injury told the Houston Chronicle on Wednesday.

Scruggs was not seen during the portion of Wednesday's practice open to the media. He likely suffered the foot injury during the Texans' Dec. 1 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The news is a blow to the Texans' offensive line and Scruggs, who is coming off his best performance of the season. He allowed only one pressure and didn't commit a penalty against the Jaguars.

Scruggs' injury is likely the reason the Texans on Monday decided to designate left guard Kenyon Green to return to practice from injured reserve.

Though a decision has not been made, Green is in play to start at left guard Sunday against Miami, along with backup offensive lineman Zach Thomas, whom the Texans claimed off waivers last month. The two have been rotating reps.

HOUSTON -- Texans safety Jalen Pitre will undergo season-ending surgery on his shoulder, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Pitre injured his shoulder when he tackled Tennessee Titans wideout Tyler Boyd in the second quarter of Houston's loss in Week 12. He left the game shortly after and didn't return.

Wish the Texans would just find one of those guys who's really good at coaching offensive linemen and getting results, no matter the draft capital used to obtain the linemen. This seems like a broken record throughout most of this team's history except a select few.

Alex Gibbs, may he rest in peace. Miss that guy and what he did for Kubiak's team.
A guy like that is one of the most important coaches you can have IMO. People say "draft linemen draft linemen" but I could care less about draft capital. The Texans have invested draft capital (whether in the draft or trading it for Tunsil) and they still kinda suck. It's because they're coached poorly.

Give me the guy who knows how to find the "lunch pail and hardhat" guys and gets them to perform as a well-oiled unit over a bunch of high draft picks who never can recognize stunts and twists and look comical trying to block it because their offensive staff is led by a doofus.

When rookie safety Calen Bullock was targeted, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had a passer rating of 19. The number was affected by Bullock's interception at the end of the first half, which stopped the Dolphins' drive at Houston's 39-yard-line.

The Houston Texans are monitoring the statuses of several players for Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Running back Joe Mixon is not one of them.

Though he was limited in practice with an ankle injury, Mixon said he expects to play Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium.

“Yeah, we’re starting playoff football right now,” Mixon said. “I’ve got to be there, and I’m going to be there. I’m be there for my teammates and obviously for myself.”

Other notable injuries included wide receiver John Metchie, who missed practice with a shoulder injury, defensive tackle Foley Fatukasi (ankle) and guard Juice Scruggs (foot).

Tight end Cade Stover and quarterback Davis Mills missed practice with illnesses.

For the Chiefs, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has a high ankle sprain, was listed as a full participant in practice.

Houston Texans receiver Stefon Diggs said “everything is good” with his recovery from his season-ending torn ACL. The star wideout took to NFL Network’s Good Morning Football on Tuesday for his first public comments since suffering the injury on Oct. 27 in a win over the Indianapolis Colts.
...
Diggs said the abrupt stop to his season hurt him emotionally as well as physically. His relationship with his fellow Texans receivers had become familial, and his seamless transition from Buffalo to Houston made him feel like something special was brewing.

“It was crazy going in not even being apprehensive,” Diggs said of joining the Texans. “I spent some time with the guys in the offseason, and it was kind of weird because it felt like I had known them before. Even though I had somewhat of a relationship with (receiver) Tank (Dell), it was like I knew them before like they were relatives of mine. Going into this season, it was just so much fun. I woke up every day with a smile.”

Diggs addressed his free agency by noting he wasn’t sure whether his Texans tenure would continue after this year. Though he said it’s a place he would be excited about staying.

“Definitely something to be excited about moving forward,” Diggs said. “I don’t know what the future holds but I definitely got a home in Houston, and I love those guys over there. They’re good people.”

Three options the Chronicle mentions at WR

Diontae Johnson
The former Pro Bowler with the Pittsburgh Steelers is likely the most talented player available. He also might come with the most baggage.

Johnson was waived on Friday by the Ravens after being suspended for refusing to play in in their Dec. 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Baltimore penalized him one game for “conduct detrimental to the team” as a result. Johnson’s suspension was supposed to be lifted for the Ravens’ win over the Steelers on Saturday, but the team opted to cut him loose before the game.

A bad attitude would be the last thing the Texans would want to bring onto a reeling roster right now, but Johnson would have reason to straighten out his act. The six-year pro is in a contract year as he’s set to be a free agent this offseason. He was off to a strong start with the Carolina Panthers this year, leading them in receptions (30), receiving yards (357) and touchdown catches (3). But his campaign was derailed after the Ravens acquired him at the trade deadline, having just one catch in four games. The breakdown in Baltimore likely buried his free agent value, so another opportunity to prove his worth would help himself and a competitive team.

Though Houston will likely have to compete with others if Johnson is an avenue they deem worth pursuing. The receiver is on waivers and can be claimed until 3 P.M. on Monday, and according to reports from NFL Network, it’s likely one team will take a chance on him. Houston currently holds 22nd priority on the wire with five playoff-positioned teams sitting ahead of them, including receiver-needy teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Chargers.

Johnson would be a particularly good replacement for Dell and Diggs given his slot production. He has 112 yards and two touchdowns on 11 catches from an inside alignment this season, where the two ailed receivers have run the most routes among Texans wideouts. But whether the Texans would take the risk on Johnson or have the opportunity to remains to be seen.

Odell Beckham Jr.
Beckham would likely be the most talented player available if in his prime. But the 32-year-old is clearly past his. The former All-Pro with the New York Giants was waived by the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 13 and not claimed by any team, making him a free agent.

Miami took a chance on the wideout famed for his acrobatic catches when they signed him this year after a series of injuries had derailed his previous few seasons. A knee surgery in the offseason impeded his start to this one though and likely limited his production when able to play. Beckham served in a reserve role for the Dolphins as he ran just 102 routes in nine games. He caught just nine passes for 55 yards and no touchdowns off those routes before being released.

Like Johnson, Beckham also has experience playing in the slot this year as he ran half his routes with Miami from the inside. He also has the experience of playing recently in offenses hailing from the same Mike Shanahan lineage as Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik’s in the Dolphins and the Los Angeles Rams.

It could be worth it to take a chance on whatever Beckham has left given his pedigree. But his lack of reliability in staying healthy is exactly what the Texans don’t need at the moment.

Richie James
Like Beckham, James could step into the Texans offense with some familiarity with scheme. He would also have familiarity with the coaching staff.

The 29-year-old started his career with the San Francisco 49ers in 2018, one year after Ryans and Slowik started their tenure with the team under Kyle Shanahan. James then worked with Slowik for three seasons after he made the transition to coaching offense in 2019.

He was primarily used as a returner with the 49ers but had his best receiving year in 2020 under Slowik, catching 23 passes for 394 yards and a touchdown. James didn’t play in 2021 due to injury but broke out with the Giants in 2022 after signing there in the offseason, catching 57 passes for 569 yards and four touchdowns, all career highs.

James signed with the Chiefs in 2023 and went back to primarily a returner role in their second-straight Super Bowl run. He went unsigned this offseason and hasn’t caught the interest of a team this year.

The six-year veteran isn’t a flashy name for the Texans to add for their playoff run. But James might be the type of addition Houston needs to make. No signing would be ready for Houston’s penultimate regular season game against the Ravens. But someone with knowledge of similar offensive schemes and terminology to the Texans would allow them to make an impact quicker than most.

James could be that someone, as well as providing help on special teams. With Dell down and Houston having cut Steven Sims before the Chiefs game, the team is without a backup returner to Robert Woods. James could provide value there as well as on offense.

Texans claim WR Diontae Johnson off waivers from Ravens. He will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.

The Ravens, meanwhile, claimed wide receiver/kick returner Steven Sims off waivers from the Texans on Monday.

Texans wide receiver Tank Dell suffered a torn ACL and dislocated kneecap in Saturday's 27-19 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday.

Ryans also said there are "other things" Dell will need to get repaired when he undergoes surgery.

After Dell suffered the injury, he was admitted overnight to University of Kansas Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center about 12 miles from Arrowhead Stadium. He flew back to Houston on Sunday and met with doctors for further evaluation.

Playbook signing.

I have a bad feeling about the Christmas Day game. Watching your line against KC was no fun. Baltimore brings it a bit up front and with Van Noy at LB. Should be an interesting match-up.

I had high expectations for Dell, i have doubts he will ever be the same player :-(

The unfortunate thing is if he has nerve damage from the injury it could be an injury that could put his career in jeopardy. :(

Safety Jimmie Ward suffered a sprained foot in Saturday’s loss to the Chiefs, which will require surgery, coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday.

Ward and Dell were placed on injured reserve Monday evening, ending their seasons.

In addition, Ryans said right guard Shaq Mason suffered a knee injury, but is considered week-to-week.

Mason isn’t expected to play in Wednesday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, but could return in the playoffs.

Hey Texans fans - with Ward out for the year, will Murray be more of a box safety than used in coverage?

He had a huge game (8-2) this week, but he’s had 100% snap count for 2 weeks & week 15 wasn’t as strong.

IDP LCG on tap, & a Wednesday start against the Ravens. How y’all feeling about Murray?

At this point, I think we just see DeMeco get creative. So many injuries everywhere and a longshot game to boot likely means some auditioning and figuring out what sticks.

The OL has issues. We have one solid WR. Schultz is dropping balls and forgetting routes, and now our safety room resembles the WR room.

Today’s news on the extent of Dell’s injury is horrible for him, but I also think between his and Diggs’ injuries we might have seen an alteration to our would-be draft plans in 2025.

We need OL, but now we are hurting for weapons as we attempt to right CJ and while he’s still on his rookie contract. Hopefully Johnson can show in the next few weeks, but now it wouldn’t surprise me to see them consider a first round WR given the extent of his injury and the timeline of his absence.

The Texans officially ruled out defensive tackle Foley Fatukasi (ankle), offensive guards Shaq Mason (Grade 2 sprained MCL, per sources, out three to four weeks) and Juice Scruggs (foot). None of them practiced this week.

That would be my guess. Ward was filling the Jalen Pitre role. Bullock is the guy you want deep.

Hence the funeral reaction among the players, especially Stroud.

Bobby and the line are the obvious culprits but maybe CJ just isn't the second coming as once thought. Very concerning.

My biggest concern is the 9 wins. They’ll think they’re close and just need little tweaks.

On the Texans forum I called us Indiana. I feel like it’s apt for this year. We beat up on the crummy teams and get beat down by teams with a pulse.

CJ’s regression is the most concerning aspect. We knew the OL was trash, but he cannot hit the broad side of a barn even when he has time to throw.

Hopefully they will look in the mirror and DeMeco finds his big boy pants to hold people accountable, from his coaches to his star players. Yes, we made the playoffs, but we look like we should be picking top ten and won’t have that pick to show for it either.

Crazy what happens when you go from a last place schedule to a top 10-ish toughest.

Edit: Although, looking at it, it doesn't look that tough really.

CJ is hearing footsteps, seeing ghosts, and any other catch-phrase you can think of for a QB that is crashing and burning.

Once he was "OK" (physically) after that big hit and came back in the game... you knew it was over for Houston.

I guess we'll find out next season if he's able to shake it off and regain composure in the pocket. If not... it's David Carr.

Make no mistake they are only going to playoffs because they are lucky they play in the worst division. It's not because of merit. 0 wins vs winning team on the road entire season. 1 win vs winning team that had a lot of injuries and not even the same team now.
When Tank went out as a man as a competitor that was the moment where you lay it all on the field for your fallen teammate or you shrivel up and give up. Texans did the later. No heart, no guts, no fight. I wouldn't be able to look myself in the mirror if that's how I honored one of the toughest teammates.
This is the history of Texans and last year said many times if they don't address that offensive line and level up from basic 5-7 different play calling intead of having Stroud just wing it he could end up being like Carr where he gets hit so much you'd always wonder what if. Sadly I am becoming more and more right.
Look at the comparion to the Steelers and their head coach what he said after the game compared to ours? Texans made excuses and "close losses to great teams" they act like we can hang and just as good.
Where was Tank Dell all year prior to getting injured? Nothing to do with Diggs since Texans didn't have him last year. They are incapable at half time to make adjustments and if I'm able to figure out a lof of their playes at snap I'm 100% sure the other team knows.
What's even worse going by Texans history they won't **** can Bobby they will give him another season and then at some point will have to read about how did Stroud go from ROY to a shell of his former self and wonder why. Texans have this offseason and overhaul to get it right unless they want to bank on hopefully winning another bad division and getting into playoffs and considering that a win. Sadly that's the highest likely outcome. No different than the Bill O'Brien years.

Make NO mistake if Texans play Steelers wild card round whoever wins has zero shot vs. KC. Chiefs will have 2 bye weeks. If Texans wins convincingly against Steelers (which most likely won't happen but lets say they do) do not get fooled when they go into KC as if they have a shot.

Imagine having a coach that gives you about 5-7 basic plays that you'd maybe run from your high school years and told if they are covered just go make something happen and oh yeah nah our offensive line is rock solid.

He's 'Turrible"

I'll be the unfeeling bastaard, and say that the "softly weeping" on his teammates shoulder when Tank got hurt was not a good look for a QB, who is supposed to be a leader. I get it being emotional, but that was over the top. Team needed a fiery leader who can rally the team after a big injury like that.

Nah it's being the best team in worst division in football which gets you automatic in postseason if they were in any other division they won't make wild card round. Texans through history are kings at beating up crap division teams while losing to the legit playoff teams.
