Houston Texans forever - enough Davis Mills Experience, back to the Stroud Renaissance (23 Viewers)

Broncos All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II suffered a shoulder injury in the second quarter of Sunday's 44-24 win over the Cowboys and did not return.

Surtain hurt his left shoulder in the first half, did not come out of the locker room at halftime and was officially ruled out with just over six minutes left in the third quarter in Empower Field at Mile High.

Replay video showed Surtain twisted his left arm/shoulder awkwardly on a tackle late in the first half. As Surtain walked to the locker room at the end of the first half, he was holding his left shoulder with his right hand.

#1 in passer rating. #17 in sacks.

Jets trade CB Carter to Eagles for WR Metchie

Eagles get: CB Michael Carter II, 2027 seventh-round pick
Jets get: WR John Metchie III, 2027 sixth-round pick

The Eagles acquired Metchie from the Texans in an August trade, but he only played 14 snaps for them.

Texans wideout Nico Collins is out of the concussion protocol and set to return against the Denver Broncos in Week 9, he said Thursday.

"Blessed to be off the protocol," Collins said. "Feeling good, feeling excited about this week's great matchup."

Texans wideout Christian Kirk, who missed the past two weeks -- and four games in total -- with a hamstring injury, also is expected to return. Kirk has 10 catches for 109 yards on the season.

So making fun of Dalton Schultz's blocking has kind of become second nature for me.

Well, heard a discussion of him, forget who it was, but essentially talking about how his teammates have recognized his improvement as a blocker this year.

So I said, ok I need to give the guy a fair shot. I just watched the 49ers game, and tried to find him each play and watch his blocking.

Yeah he's improved. He might not be the best blocking TE in the league. But overall he was effective. He did give up a pressure when he was isolated on the DE and he got bullrushed. It looked like he was just supposed to chip him and then release on a bootleg, but he got bowled back and CJ had to throw it away.

But other than that? Schultz was a net benefit on most of the running plays he blocked on. I'd give him a solid B to B+ on blocking for the game.

TE Harrison Bryant on the other hand I'd give a C. Watched him a lot too as I often couldn't tell if it was Schultz or Bryant until nearer the end of a play when their number was more visible. Bryant did very little to actually open up any holes in the running game. At best he didn't get pushed back too far.

I don't expect to win this weekend with that Denver pass rush, but would be really nice if we did. Remaining schedule is pretty nice. Bills, KC, 2 x Colts (and one is week 18 when they may end up resting starters at this rate) are the only ones I would expect us to not be favored. Maybe Chargers if they are healthier by the end of December. I can still see possibly 6~7 more wins on the schedule if the defense keeps playing like it has and the offense can take care of business against the weaker defenses.

Just like the Texans to crush your hopes one week and then bring them back from the brink the following game. The seesaw is stressful :topcat:

I sometimes still imagine a world where Caserio traded up to 13 and drafted Tyler Warren instead of trading back for a WR we rarely utilize :kicksrock:

I was holding my breath until the Colts were on the clock. I knew we were going to take him, but was frightened we wouldn’t.

Reminds me of how every time I watch the Ravens (like last night) I'm taken back to us not drafting Kyle Hamilton and instead trading down to take one of the worst guards to literally ever start a game. Granted they did find Bullock later on but Hamilton is an All Pro at SS.

Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed Monday morning that quarterback C.J. Stroud is in concussion protocol after taking a hit early in the second quarter of Sunday’s 18-15 loss to the Denver Broncos.

Stroud was removed from the game and never returned.

“I spoke to him last night,” Ryans said. “He’s feeling a little bit better. We’ll see how the week goes and how he progresses throughout the week.”

CJ and Fairbairn officially out for Sunday. It's going to be tough to pull out a W without Kaimi aka the bread and butter of our offense.

The Houston Texans already knew they’d be without C.J. Stroud and Ka’imi Fairbairn against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Coach DeMeco Ryans ruled out the team’s starting quarterback with a concussion and kicker with a quad injury earlier this week.

But it was revealed on Friday that the Texans will be down a few more key pieces come Sunday's AFC South game.

Right tackle Tytus Howard, right guard Ed Ingram and nickel Jalen Pitre were all ruled out by the team’s official injury report before the home leg of Houston’s season series with the Jaguars

Gonna be an ugly game most likely

The Texans made several phone calls across the league to upgrade their roster earlier this week. One of the calls they made was to the New York Jets to inquire about running back Breece Hall, three sources with knowledge of those calls told the Houston Chronicle.

Hall, 24, is one of the top young running backs in the NFL, and would have helped solve a short-term issue at running back, and potentially a long-term one if Joe Mixon’s foot ailment lingers longer than a season.

It’s unclear how far conversations between Caserio and Jets general manager Darren Mougey reached, or whether the parameters of a deal were discussed. Mougey had a busy day Tuesday, executing deals with both the Dallas Cowboys and the Indianapolis Colts, trading away tackle Quinnen Williams and cornerback Sauce Gardner, two of his biggest defensive stars.

And the Texans weren’t the only ones interested in Hall, who reportedly wanted out of New York. The Chiefs also made an offer of a fourth-round pick for Hall, according to ESPN’s Nate Taylor.

But the Jets, who scored three first-round picks and a couple of backups in the deal for Williams and Gardner, wanted more, and were unwilling to compromise for anything less than a third-round pick, another person with knowledge of the talks confirmed.

...

Caserio’s call to the Jets wasn’t the only one he made, though. He made several calls to teams in search of a tight end, where the Texans have had significant injuries, and at guard, one of the sources said.

Throughout the season, Houston has had to rotate Laken Tomlinson and Juice Scruggs at left guard. And Ed Ingram is out this week with a knee injury.

Those were the three positions where Houston needed help the most.

But whatever those teams asked for their players, the Texans were not willing to pay those prices.

Glad to see them at least trying. Some obvious holes they tried to address, points us to where they'll be headed in the offseason. I kind of agree that a 3rd for Breece was too much given our team situation and the unlikelihood we make the playoffs. With that much interest though makes me think the Jets will tag Breece and try to work a trade with some team.

Texans Rookie left tackle Aireontae Ersery has allowed a 7.1% pressure rate this season.

That is the 8th lowest among LTs with 100+ pass blocking snaps & the 2nd lowest for a rookie LT since 2018.

Ersery has allowed less than a 10% pressure rate in every game since Week 4.

(NFL Pro) (@TexansJacob)

Saw this a few days ago, if correct that's some pretty good news. Although I do wonder if some of that is because opposing defenses may be targeting other players on the line like that rotating LG spot.

I am thinking for Jeremiyah Love we'd need to be in the early teens. I'd think the Ravens, Commanders, Vikings and probably a few dark horses out there may end up picking before us and would be interested. Could see Breece, KW3, Allgeier, Dowdle, JW all possible available in March too. The TE free agent class looks pretty good too: possible guys like Andrews, Likely, NJoku, Pitts. If we go FA or miss out on Love, IDK, feel like Caserio would trade down again. Hate the idea of taking a guard that early again, I'd rather use one of our 2nd's for that, there's one or two older guards out there as FA's as a possibility. The mocks I've seen the DT's aren't great at the top and it's a pretty deep group at both edge and center.

Feel like we'll see a lot of contract work in the offseason too. Obviously Will Anderson and Stroud will be the big ones to watch. I assume Tytus Howard gets extended since he's been playing well at RT and he's only 30 and has a high cap number. Do they extend Danielle Hunter again? Obviously still playing at a high level, but he'll be 33 in '27 and a FA and his cap number in '26 is the biggest on the team. It's a deep edge group, do they try to draft his eventual replacement so they have a guy on a rookie contract across from Will Anderson?

It's a pretty nice OT class supposedly, if they were willing to trade Tunsil away, would they trade Howard to save cap space and draft another OT (ideally high) this year?

@Jayded Where do you think we need our draft pick to fall to get Julian Love?
My hunch is he goes in the teens in the first round as a weapon. I think he’s possibly a top ten talent but teams will go QB/OL/DL in the top 10 and he’ll be that weapon someone covers in that area.

In the 4th quarter the Texans pass rush had a 100% pressure rate, generating pressure on every Jaguar's pass attempt.

Also, the 36-29 result was the first time this score has happened in NFL history. A scorigami.

Heard some clips of Jacksonville radio stations talking about the game. Yeah they are taking it pretty hard. Heard it called the worst loss in their history, etc.

I am afraid our chances of making the playoffs are still pretty low unfortunately. We have games against the Chiefs, Bills, and 2x Colts still to come. Can't drop many games from what's left, if any.

Yeah its gonna be tough. They don’t overlook the Titans they are back to .500. But in addition to the games you mentioned also have the Chargers. All of those teams are vulnerable on any given Sunday but thats 5 out of the last 7 against likely playoff teams, a tall order but if they want to prove they can play with the big boys no better time.

My guess is 8-9 or it’s more of the Texans to go 9-8 and just miss the playoffs. I hope I’m wrong and they really put it together to close out the year.

5-5 would be pretty amazing after this start but again I'm tempering any real optimism until we start beating contenders. I don't want to overlook the Titans (hello trap) but looking forward to the game v. Buffalo. That should be a better tell. And even if CJ comes out of concussion protocol this week, l hope they rest him and let him focus on the early week/Thursday night match against the Bills.

Ryans also ruled out Jalen Pitre with a concussion. The defensive back also suffered his head injury against the Broncos and, like Stroud, missed the Jaguars game and every practice since. Myles Bryant filled in for Pitre versus Jacksonville, and the Texans signed him from the practice squad to the active roster on Wednesday.

Tytus Howard, who also was concussed against the Broncos, seems to be progressing better than the two others. The offensive lineman participated in both of the team’s practices this week after missing the Jaguars game. Howard started each of the team’s first eight games, playing the last seven at right tackle. Trent Brown started in his place against Jacksonville.

CJ Stroud and Ka'imi Faibairn both practiced today.

Stroud's practice participation is a significant step in his progress through the NFL’s concussion protocol, as it marks him being cleared for football activities. Since being injured, Stroud had not been seen at a practice or game before Tuesday, although he returned to the team’s facility last week.

But Stroud still has a few conditions to meet before he’s able to play in a game. Tuesday’s session was a non-contact practice. He must still complete a contact practice symptom-free and be cleared by an independent doctor before suiting up when it counts.

Hope springs eternal, quality win last night. Colts up next (who just lost to the Steelers and struggled to OT against the Cards) and then the Chiefs who look the most vulnerable they've looked since Mahomes took over. Chargers got blown out by JAX last week. One down and now need to win 4 out of the next 6 which is a tall order but if you split with the Colts, can beat 1 of the Chiefs/Chargers, and then take care of business against the Cards & Raiders... you're suddenly at 10-7 and likely in the playoffs. Dare we dream?!?! :suds:

I will say, having a day or two distance from the emotion of the game, looking at the stats and getting to watch the broadcast... I think I might have spoke too much about Mills having made himself a bunch more money.

I mean really it was a pretty pedestrian QB performance. It was what you ask for from a backup QB when you have a great defense. It wasn't what the Texans would want to see from a starter. Way too many missed throws. He was fortunate that his completions tended to cluster together in the same drives.

So I had missed at the time, that the Texans released RB Dameon Pierce before the Bills game. Some other team's fans (Chargers, Broncos) are desiring his signing.

Think I saw we had a grand total of 35 yards of offense in the 2nd half. Only 3 points as well and that came off the short field from the INT that was a pick 6 called back by penalty. They very nearly lost on the final drive again but the defense managed to get the turnover after Allen drove nearly the length of the field. If the Bills had not gone for it on 4 and 2 earlier and kicked the chipshot FG we would have lost as they were already well within FG range on the final drive and could have burned the clock down and kicked another chipshot FG to win.

A wins a win, but all those fans that are saying there should be a QB controversy have no idea what they are talking about. We were lucky to beat the Titans of all teams last week too.

Not a big fan of TNF but when your team wins it's pretty awesome. It's been kind of nice to kick my feet up the past few days and just relax, especially on a Sunday :coffee:

Same! I was looking at the list of games today and trying to decide what's worth watching, I guess KC/Indy makes the most sense since it's a good match up plus that's our next two opponents. I've beem in Colorado the last decade so I usually watch the Broncos after the Texans but they are off this week. Same thing happened with the Texans Bye earlier, Broncos played on Thursday that week and there wasn't much left on Sunday I cared to watch. I ended up going for a hike that day. Reminded me of the old Simpsons episode where Homer & Lisa bond over football on Sundays and after the Super bowl they go hiking to keep there Sunday time together...

Turn on whether I want Indy or KC to win their game
Indy. We aren’t winning the division most likely, so betttwr we see other wildcard contenders fall.

Also, Houston’s kryptonite in the playoffs has been KC lately, so let’s hope they remove themselves from the equation.

Think I agree, Indy win but just barely or poorly. We aren't catching Indy so try to get KC out, I think it's likely KC beats us so they'd have the tie breaker over us for the wildcard. Also let's Indy build a bigger lead on the #1 seed perhaps giving us a gimme game in week 18 if they have nothing to play for that week. If we make the #7 seed and past the wildcard round in what looks likely to be either Denver or Foxboro, I'd be super excited to be going to Indy in the Divisional round. Lots of ifs there but if we're day dreaming, why not?

That's the way I'm leaning as well. And if they have the division wrapped up, that last game of the season versus the good guys may be more of a rest week for them.

Yeah, was cheering for the Chiefs but suppose you guys convinced me.

If the Colts and Jags lose once, we'd control out destiny, able to lock up the division by running the table. But that's not going to be easy to do so...

Wow, Chip Kelly is available. Wish the Houston brass had the stones to move on mid season. I'd gladly trade in Nick for Chip.

Wednesday update:

C.J. Stroud is still in concussion protocol, Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said Wednesday, but the quarterback is making progress towards returning this week.

Stroud practiced without limitation on Wednesday; the first session of the week open to the media ahead of Sunday’s AFC South game at the Indianapolis Colts. His appearance marks the second consecutive practice he’s participated in since returning on Nov. 18.

Stroud’s participation is evidence that he continues to advance through the league’s protocol. His involvement last week marked his return to football activities, one of the final steps before being cleared to play.

But the quarterback still needed to go through two practices symptom free, including a contact practice, and be cleared by an independent doctor before earning the OK to play. Ryans said last week’s truncated schedule was not enough time for Stroud to do that ahead of the team’s Thursday night matchup with the Buffalo Bills, causing him to miss the 23-19 victory.

“For the protocol, each guy has their own steps and what they have to pass.” Ryans said Wednesday. “It’s a lot of different steps, and each guy is different when it comes to the symptoms that they’re having and what they’re feeling. So, whatever they report that they’re feeling, we’re going to take that to heart and make sure we’re taking extra precautions with the guys when it’s a concussion.”

Stroud should have ample chances to get healthy for the big matchup with Indianapolis having had the weekend to recover and a full week of practice ahead. If he can, the team is eagerly awaiting his return.

So we need to keep winning, but if we do we're in a good position in terms of tiebreakers.

We have the head to head wins over Ravens and Bills if we end up tied.

Jags, we are 1 game back of.
But if we tie, division record is first. We're 3-1 they are 1-1. We both play Colts twice. They also play Titans twice more.
If it goes to the next, that is record in common games. We'd lose 2W and a L (Bal, Buf, TB) from our total record. They would lose a W (Car), a L (Cin) and result of game against Jets (assuming a win). If it goes to next tiebreak, conf record we are currently in the lead 5-2 vs the Jag's 4-2, but all the Jags games left are conference games. Since we're a game back, Jags would have to lose one more conf game than us down the stretch at least for it to be a tie, so we'd win that.

Steelers we are tied at 5-2 conference record, and hold the strength of scheduled next tiebreak. We both have 1 out of conference opponent left. Cards for us, Detroit for Steelers.

And we play the Chiefs so a win would give us head to head over them.

We play the Chargers, so a win could give us head to head there.

So a lot of chance to control our own destiny, and win tiebreaks if it comes down to it. Just have to get to that point at least.

Aaron Wilson: Texans practiced today (Thanksgiving). Both CJ and Jalen Pitre were full participants. CJ will be announced tomorrow as having cleared the concussion protocol.
