Houston Texans forever - least favorite color: Green (1 Viewer)

Feel like this game is an annoyance on the schedule. Short week, WRs injured, OL shaky. Played awful there last year. Like just get there and try to get the hell out as healthy as you can, damn the result... Then take the long week, get Nico back and re-examine the OL. Hope I'm wrong and they punch the Jets in the mouth though

Yep. There's a reason why the 2-6 Jets are favored. I always get a bad feeling traveling up north especially in prime time. Hope the Vegas disrespect lights a fire under their a** :coffee:

Who are a few under-the-radar players producing trade buzz?

Fowler: Houston guard Kenyon Green, a former first-round pick, is on a few teams' trade candidates list. And I had heard that before his Week 8 benching. Maybe the Texans keep him because highly talented linemen are hard to find, but GM Nick Caserio is known for his aggressiveness, so flipping a guard for another guard wouldn't exactly shock, either. Also at guard, Chicago's Nate Davis is available, and the Bears are prepared to cover some of his $8 million salary to facilitate.

What is the most interesting team heading into the deadline?

The other team I wanted to bring up here was the Texans, who had kind of an "all-in" offseason but have suffered some tough losses during the season. Stefon Diggs' season-ending injury makes me wonder if Houston might poke around on the receiver market this weekend once it finishes playing the Jets on Thursday night. The Texans hope top receiver Nico Collins can return from IR when first eligible in Week 10, and they like Tank Dell a lot, but they're thin at receiver after that. Diggs was a guy they felt good about using in the middle part of the field, where Collins and Dell don't often operate.
At 6-2 and trying to maximize quarterback C.J. Stroud's rookie contract window, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Texans active early next week. And I do hear rumblings they're poking around at receiver. Slayton, Kendrick Bourne and K.J. Osborn are names to watch, and I think they'd want in on Jakobi Meyers if the Raiders made him available.

Feel bad for him. He went to high school with my boys but it just didn't work out. Injured or not, he couldn't go on at LG anymore. Hopefully they can make a trade that shores up the line and we can point to as a turning point for the offense when we look back at the season.

No doubt. I was celebrating his injury in jest and hope he gets better/figures it out.

I was listening to one of these Texans radio podcasts and they brought up an interesting point that this team reminds them of the BOB led AFC championship teams - great record covering up poor performance. Our point differential is frightening for a 6-3 team. If we keep playing at this pace, a WC victory is about the most we can expect. I think the only difference is we have the talent to make a change and right the ship just not sure if Demeco is going to light a fire under Slowik and the OL's butt to do that.

…and Nick sits there and does nothing to improve the team at the deadline.

Actually at the very end of the deadline he traded a backup DT for a 7th rounder, so we acquired a 7th rounder.

I'm surprised they didn't go out and get Budda Baker. Now, I've got them beating the team I picked to win the Super Bowl in the preseason, the Lions, by one point this week:

Texans 28, Lions 27

Wide receiver Nico Collins and defensive end Will Anderson Jr. were absent from Wednesday’s practice, officially the first of the week leading up to Sunday night’s matchup with the Detroit Lions.

Collins was placed on injured reserve after suffering a hamstring injury in a 23-20 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 6 and has missed the last four games. The team’s leader in receiving yards (567) is eligible to be activated this week, but the team has yet to designate him for return.

“Nico is doing good,” coach DeMeco Ryans said after Wednesday’s practice. “We’ll see where he ends up.”

Ryans said Monday that the team would “continue to evaluate Nico throughout the week and see where he is.” Despite Ryans expressing positivity towards Collins, that evaluation rendered him unavailable Wednesday.

Although Anderson’s status seems up in the air, the Texans did add some defensive reinforcements. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and safety Jimmie Ward practiced Wednesday, a positive sign for their returns Sunday.

What do you guys think is the culprit for this offense preforming so poorly? Slowik was adored initially and thought of as some sort of offensive wunderkind but seems to have lost his magic. Did he suddenly forget how to coach? And nothing has really changed with this OL. Did they suddenly forget how to block? Seems like defenses have adjusted and Slowik hasn't?

Losing your two best receiving threats doesn’t help much.

Interior protection on the oline has disrupted the offense in a major way. A little surprised they did not make a deal to bolster, but a tough position to find help mid-season.

Chris Simms spoke about this in a segment the other day. Gets a little in the weeds wrt protection assignments but it’s an interesting breakdown.

Texans offense & C.J. Stroud struggling

Kind of disagree with him it’s the inherent limitations of having C Juice Scruggs call pressure protection instead of Stroud. But Ryans has brought up OL communication at the podium so obviously they’re not on the same page.

Here’s an article from a few weeks ago: Texans at crossroads with pass protection crisis

Green missed the entirety of last season, my guess is this is a case where they were really hoping playing time experience would help him improve and develop into his upside but instead he's been abysmal. Literally the worst guard in the league based on pressures given up and other metrics. That's opposed to his backups who are just poor to below average.

Also PFF has said that Mason is playing pretty poorly at RG this year and Scruggs seems to be up and down from week to week.

Texans pass block win rate ranking in NFL:

Tackles: 12th
Guard/Center: 31st
Stroud made 2 wow passes vs the JETS. Scrambling to the right, a 34 yard sideline strike to Woods. Then the 50 yard pass to Dell while scrambling to the left. He has no pocket on most passing plays I've seen this year.

“By no means is it one guy,” offensive line coach Chris Strausser said. “To me, that’s an easy out in our unit. We know there’s a lot of guys involved. Kenyon, I really think of this as being his rookie season. That first year he was here, played some, got hurt. Last year, didn’t play at all. This year, coming back off an injury and really getting back into the mix. Also, this is his first time in our offense.

“But by no means is Kenyon the only guy.”

In some ways, Strausser is correct.

Right guard Shaq Mason has allowed 7½ sacks, which leads all NFL guards, according to the league's Next Gen Stats. Center Juice Scruggs has allowed five sacks, most among centers.
They’ve struggled particularly in picking up stunts and blitzes and with communication.

What has made matters worse is that the offensive line has been fairly healthy this season compared to 2023, when the Texans cycled through four different combinations in the first five weeks.

On Friday, Houston designated Collins to return to practice after he spent the past four weeks on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

The Texans (6-3) listed Collins as questionable on their injury report ahead of their "Sunday Night Football" showdown against the Detroit Lions (7-1).

I mentioned this in another thread that I created that they should have made a move with the Cardinals to get S Budda Baker for a fourth-rounder in 2025. Now, the thought of him defending Sam LaPorta tomorrow is nothing more than a pipe dream. I want to hear from Texans fans: What impact do you think a guy like Budda Baker would've made in the secondary?

Tank Dell (back) is expected to play against the Lions in Week 10, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC Houston.
Dell was added to the injury report on Friday, but still got in a limited practice. Wilson notes that Nico Collins’ status with his hamstring is still to be determined and the Texans are prepared to play with Dell as the WR1 again this week if Collins can’t go.

I don't know much about Baker or pretend to know much about scheme fits, etc. but safety is our biggest weakness outside of interior o'line. Pitre looked like a find his rookie year but regressed badly since then. Playing him more at nickel corner now I believe. There's hope for rookie Bullock this year to develop but he fills just one spot. Had really wanted S Kyle Hamilton 3 years ago in the 1st round but instead they traded down and took G Kenyon Green
