Houston Texans forever - Stephen A Smith: "Here Rex, hold my beer" (2 Viewers)

Running back Joe Mixon and left tackle Laremy Tunsil did some work on the side at practice Tuesday. Mixon has missed eight straight practices since suffering an undisclosed injury. Tunsil has not practiced at all during camp while working his way back from offseason knee surgery. Fullback Andrew Beck, activated from the PUP list this week, did some work off to the side as well. He had been out with a calf injury.

If we move Pitre to nickel, does that mean they see Bullock stepping in as a rookie to play FS?

Haven't heard anything specific about Bullock being a starter yet. But you'd think so, yes. Pitre is still listed as first string on the team depth chart. Which are often notoriously not trustworthy at this time of year.

Hall of Fame game. Kenyon Green is playing left guard, and Scruggs is playing center to start the game.

I really enjoyed all the Andre highlights. Man amongst boys if ever there was one at WR

I love as part of his highlight reel (at least down here in Houston), they've been replaying a lot of the Cortland Finnegan beatdown. AJ was always so calm and collected throughout his career but had to put his foot down that day. Up there with the Buddy Ryan punch in Houston football lore.

Really love how the Houston fans showed up for Andre too. It looked like nearly half the crowd were Texans fans.

It was fine.
Generally, I don't.
I used to because I love a good football play regardless of team but the guy was a classic act and that's like the lone time he lost his temper in fifteen years. It's overdone and they usually don't show another highlight of his because he's retired. So I see Texans highlights like oof you missed a ton of elite grabs to show a fight.
Arian Foster had some Henry and Bam Morris to him. Show me one of those smashing runs instead. We had a weird trend where DL were catching fast runners from behind and JJ Watt had some. Gimme that. Cushing was half crazy and there's gotta be a hundred highlights of woah he's a "bad" dude. For a few years, ol KJ was as good as anyone getting open deep- gimme a bomb highlight.

When I was growing up we didn't watch a show 1000 times. Once a year- gimme Uncle Buck or Vacation or whatever but if you put that on every month it won't do well on TV. I think the Texans gotta adjust with Andre n Finnegan, Titans and MCM, OBJs catch, and there's several fan bases that overdo one play. How often do you see the famous statue of Liberty play? Flutie to Phalen Hail Mary? Tyree's catch?

It's on the internet a lot, yeah. But the replays I usually see with Andre are the last gasp game tying catch against the Redskins that sent the game into overtime and they ended up winning. And the one taking a ball away from Patrick Peterson in the endzone for a touchdown.

They need to find that catch he made against Miami... I can't remember how he got his hands through and around the DB to make the grab, but it was as good of a catch as any of the phenomenal ones he had.

Sports radio mentioned starters are going to play this week in preseason, though didn't have specifics on how many or who.

Edit to add:

Houston Texans starters will play in their second preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday.

Ryans said he believes it's beneficial for their starters to get live physical game reps.

"I truly believe that a guy needs to get reps in a preseason game. We don't go to the ground as you see the way we practice. We try to keep guys up and be as safe as possible in practice. I think everybody needs the opportunity to go to the ground a couple of times in the game then get up and dust yourself off and just know you're good," he said. "So you just have to go through and play live reps in football before live action comes in September. So you'll see our [starters] go out and get reps this week versus Pittsburgh."

Justin Simmons rumored to be going to Texans refuted by the team. The leak came from his agent's agency soooo that's a bit curious
Aaron Wilson's team quote is that they evaluate all free agents which we don't often take as a no in these type rumors

Running back Joe Mixon and linebacker Christian Harris were back Sunday after missing the past three weeks with injuries. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil made his training camp debut.

Quarterback C.J. Stroud was clicking with his receivers. He was 10-of-12 in team drills, which included a long touchdown pass to rookie tight end Cade Stover. The Texans drafted Stover in the fourth round this past April. Stover was teammates with Stroud at Ohio State for two seasons, and it’s clear the two still have a connection. Stroud has referred to Stover as his “brother.”

Have heard a number of people talking up how DT Mario Edwards is playing.

Steal of a deal? Defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr. has been 'a revelation' for Houston Texans

Texans defensive coordinator Matt Burke recently called Mario Edwards Jr. “a revelation.”
...
“I think he’s just been super explosive,” Burke said. “Sometimes it takes awhile for guys to go from — especially a nine-year vet, or whatever he is — from a read, or different types, or different alignments, to really consistently buy into an attack technique that we ask him to play. He’s probably adapted better than anyone in such a short time.”
...
With last year’s starting defensive tackles, veterans Sheldon Rankins and Maliek Collins, now with the Bengals and 49ers, respectively, the Texans made some mostly under-the-radar moves in the offseason to help plug the holes. One of those moves was signing Edwards to a one-year, $2 million deal. The nine-year pro has started just 33 of the 114 games he’s played in the league and made just one start for the Seahawks last season. But as training camp has progressed, Edwards has emerged as a starter for the Texans alongside another free-agent addition, Foley Fatukasi.
...
Edwards ranked 39th in the league among interior defenders last season with a 68.0 overall grade, according to Pro Football Focus. His pass-rush grade, however, was much higher, coming in at 78.4 and ranking 16th. Despite not being a regular starter in Seattle, he still got on the field for 393 snaps, and a majority of those came in passing situations. He finished the season with 21 tackles, five tackles for loss, six quarterback hits, two sacks and a forced fumble.
...
While Edwards sat out the Hall of Fame game against the Bears with the rest of the starters, he played 16 snaps against the Steelers in the second preseason contest and made the most of them. He delivered five total tackles and combined with veteran defensive end Jerry Hughes for a sack of elusive Pittsburgh quarterback Justin Fields.

Finally got to watch most of the Steelers game.

So this feels like that point in preseason when I'm convinced Cam Akers is the 2nd best RB on the team, only to find he doesn't even make the team.

Boy, haven't seen Skowronek do anything yet. Announcer commented how he's been great in camp, but very not impressive in games.

That said I don't know who is going to get kept at WR. If I had to guess I suppose I'd say Woods gets released for cap savings, and they keep Metchie and Xavier Hutchinson. I'm assuming Noah Brown is already safe. But I'm really guessing there.

At the game. Focused on Metchie to watch for a good long stretch. Waa getting open consistently even on plays ball went elsewhere. Was open deep on play that went to Hutchinson on the TD drive

Also, still think Akera is best RB to have played yet.

Where is Akers on the depth chart?

Many of us here in Houston think Akers should be the number 2 RB. Pierce looks kinda worthless in this scheme.

WR is tough. Not enough spots for all of Metchie, Woods, Brown, Hutchinson, Skowronek... and what about Sims? I'd like to keep him as a return man too. Punt return TD in the playoffs against the Ravens, just broke a nice kick return a little bit ago that called back due to a block in the back. Good problems to have I guess.

Taylor went into the tent for I assume concussion test. Back out, still on sideline so guessing cleared but seems done.

He looked good at RB. Jordan also putting some good stuff out there this drive.

Pierce getting reps w/Mixon out. Ogunbawlae has been next into preseason games, then Akers. Then JJ Taylor and Jordan. Not sure if that is order, just what we saw

Pierce's reps this preseason have looked like a waste of time for the most part. Was hoping they'd give Akers a series with Stroud and the first team and see if the running game looked any better.

When Pierce is in, it looks like the old Tecmo Bowl game when you don't have a good RB and the only way to move the ball is throw throw throw.

Despite the rosy camp reports I've for sure not seen actual signs with my own eyes that Pierce has improved in this running scheme.

Akers meanwhile looks like a natural fit, even if he is playing with and against and inferior quality of players.

From a fantasy angle for Pierce I can't decide if I am rooting for Pierce to keep the backup job or get cut/traded.

So Metchie had a good game, and from my standpoint not just on the plays that the ball actually went to him. I didn't watch him every play, but I focused in on him for a stretch and he was getting open on plays the ball didn't go his way. Ended up with 6 for 68 and a TD. The TD looked like a hard catch (didn't catch the replay, that was my impression live). First preseason I've been at live to watch, but definitely the best have noticed from him.

Have heard he's had a good camp, just wasn't showing up in the games. I'd think after this one he probably slides into the 5th WR slot. Or at worst 6th if they decide to keep Robert Woods.

My own gut feeling is Woods is released or traded to save $5m in cap room.

Rushing:

Player CAR YDS AVG TD LONG
J.J. Taylor 5 36 7.2 0 18
Cam Akers 6 29 4.8 0 14
British Brooks 5 23 4.6 2 15
Jawhar Jordan 8 16 2.0 0 7
Dameon Pierce 4 5 1.3 0 3
Dare Ogunbowale 2 4 2.0 0 2

Actually surprised Jordan didn't have more yards, felt like he did watching live. But he got it done as a receiver, 4 for 42, so guess I was failing to separate that in my head.

Taylor also had a much longer run that he stepped out so it was brought back about 20-30 yards from where he was tackled.

Chronicle predictions. WR they have John Metchie III, Noah Brown, Steven Sims filling out the 6 slots.

RB they have Mixon, Pierce, Ogunbawale and Akers making it.

Jawhar Jordan and JJ Taylor are eligible for the practice squad. As are Xavier Hutchinson and Quentez Cephus at WR.

Also predicting just going with CJ and Mills at QB.

CB depth they have making it: Jeff Okudah, Desmond King, D’Angelo Ross. Mike Ford part of the cuts.

I'd rather they keep Case around but I get going with Mills for youth and upside. Keenum is getting up there in age these days.

Stuff heard on local sports radio when I went to grab lunch.

Texans and Rams 1st strings going against each other in joint practices.

Tunsil is practicing.

Demeco: Dameon Pierce needs more work/reps. (Radio host speculation if he'll play this weekend)

Bullock playing safety with the 1st string today in the joint practices. Demeco: He could become the best one I've ever gotten to coach

Mixon has strung together several practices since working his way back to health, and Tuesday’s session showed that if he’s not yet in peak condition, he’s certainly close. He began team drills with two nice runs, showing the strong burst and agility that’s made him a four-time 1,000-yard rusher.

“Man, I feel good,” Mixon said. “The only thing is getting used to this heat. It’s hard getting used to that. But other than that, man, getting my legs up under me and (being) able to get that chemistry with the O-line and receivers and, obviously, C.J. (Stroud), it feels great.”

Love what I"m hearing about Lassiter in camp....

Made some nice plays in the joint practices with the Rams

Bro, this dude is different.. fr @stingjr

over the top breakup on Kupp

put out some good tape on these 4 plays v SEA last week

(#14 bottom of the screen RCB)

What he is lacking speed he makes up for in physicality. Going to be great in run support & blowing up screens, and more than adequate as an off-man / zone corner. Solidifies the other side of the field.

Stingley has everyone on lockdown at LCB. Sauce and Jaylon Johnson are in a Tier above him, but he's at the tippy top of the best of the rest.

Would love to see a matchup of two teams who have never been down in N'Orlins.

Can't wait for that preview Week 11 on SNF.

Good luck this season.

@GregR @Major (or anyone)

any strong sentiment on how Collins-Dell-Diggs will shake out?

I have it:
  • Collins WR13 30th overall
  • Dell WR19 40th
  • Diggs WR28 64th
(full PPR start 3WR + Flex)

Seems I am out of sync with consensus. I am getting Dell & CJ have a strong connection, and we’ll see Nico & Tank in 12 personnel. They’ll all play the slot at times, but Diggs will have the most Slot snaps in 11 formations.

Am I reading this situation correctly? Or am I just guessing & no one knows?

You know I really don't, definitely not a strong take. Any of the three could end up leading in targets and it wouldn't surprise me. I might expect Diggs to see more of the share closer to the goal line I suppose. Beyond that, I could just really see Slowik changing things up to take advantage of how each opponent is defending, resulting in never quite being sure how it's going to play out from one week to another.

Sorry I don't have more to add there!

No one knows for certain. I will share my hunch though....

Collins = WR1, but is most hurt by Diggs' presence on this team. If Diggs is returning to form, Collins' shares are likely most affected IMO. I could see an early season lull in Collins, which is when people should run to grab him from a frustrated owner, and then Diggs starting to fade some opportunities to Collins later in the year

Diggs = ok WR2. I don't think he's the Diggs of old anymore but might have flashes of it. I see him mostly affecting Collins but not living up to the lofty draft status I've seen around. I think he's the clear 3rd option to consider and would draft him like that, not as the 2nd option as I often see. I could see him fading later in the season to a 3/40 or 4/40 regular stat line and the Texans moving on after his 1 year deal expires.

Dell = strong WR3. He's beyond his injuries and Stroud loves him. When he was healthy midseason last year, he was splitting WR1 stats with Collins until he broke his leg. He's going to have the most up and down weeks, especially until Diggs/Collins seems to sort itself out. I think he'll be the guy with the 3/30 and then 6/120 week to week sort of guy to start the season. Dell drawing CB3s on opposing teams should have drafters foaming at the mouth for the potential. Love his talent and his ADP going off the board as the 3rd WR drafted for the team. He's the one to live up to or surpass his draft capital.

I'd agree with this take. I probably wouldn't draft Collins or Diggs unless they fell. Dell I'm most bullish on and think he'll outperform his ADP.

ESPN top 100 players:
99 Stingley
85 Diggs
40 Tunsil
39 D Hunter
31 WAJr
15 Stroud
Interesting that they included Diggs but not Nico. I would probably default to the younger player with the already established connection to the QB.

I thought that was odd too but you gotta think they're favoring past production and accolades versus what us ff guys do.

I thought about that too, but it is supposed to be based on 2024 expectations.

To create our list, we asked a panel of dozens of ESPN NFL experts to rate players based on performance expectations for the 2024 season compared to their peers. Emphasis was placed solely on the upcoming season and predicting potential greatness, rather than past performance or positional value. From those ratings, we ranked the best players in the league.
