Houston Texans forever - week off to get healthy (1 Viewer)

Coming into town this weekend to visit family and going to the game Sunday night. Be my first live home game in many years (as I moved to Colorado nearly 9 years ago.) Can’t wait to see our guys live again!

That's great to hear. Try to make some time before the game to walk around the parking lot. Should be some good energy and epic tailgating before a big Sunday night game.

Hope I don’t jinx it but once upon a time people were shaking their heads saying poor Texans will have to face generational QB Trevor Lawrence for a decade. A year ago it was AR lighting things on fire out the gate and embarrassing us. How the wheel turns…

Worried Al-Shaair could see a suspension for the punch in the scrum. Can't blame him for being upset as he got mauled by multiple Bears for a completely clean hit before he was able to get back on his feet. But I won't be surprised if the league does something. Hopefully just a fine.

I forgot about that. He was also talking smack most of the time after that as well. Kind of worries me about his maturity and ability to keep a level head. Wouldn't be surprised if he got a game.

Aj Brown

It was with my 10 year old daughter, all her players got hurt and she is 0-2. Trying to help her without upsetting the balance of the league. There are cousins, etc that are trying as well.

If Nico gets hurt in week 3, I'm blaming your daughter

What would happen if the government found out that my daughter had the ability to injure people by only rostering them.

I would have to take my daughter on the run ala firestarter style.

I read the book and it did not end well for the dad.

TE Brevin Jordan was put on IR. Haven't heard anything about his injury. He finished the game Sunday.

Mixon didn't practice. No word yet on how serious his is.

Dameon Pierce still out with a hamstring.

Expected to play Sunday.

Also, leading the NFL in receiving yards.

Greetings Texans fans, it's one of your original cheerleaders when Stroud was drafted and watching the team grow over 17 games plus 2 Playoff games
I managed to get CJS on a few teams (I'm QB adverse at most Redrafts) but I wanted to have Stroud this season
He hasn't exactly lit it up yet. I think the team is still in preseason mode but they'll be coming out of that soon
I also made a point to get Nico Collins in as many redrafts as possible and so far so good hope his health holds up for the season

Collins is the 1A on this team, can't be much debate about that and I would even just say he's their WR1, Diggs/Dell are some combo of WR2/3
One thing I find unusual are folks that seem to feel if Nico misses time that one of the other two will fill his shoes and the stat sheet, I'm not so sure
Diggs hasn't done much other than a couple TD catches week 1
Dell is vertically challenged let's say and is a Smurf compared to Nico...a very fast Smurf, one that only needs a small crack/creese and he's gone so I get the excitement with him

If Collins misses time for any reason, I don't look at the other 2 WRs as filling his shoes. Sure, their targets would go UP but that doesn't mean the offense would go UP another level
In fact I think the offense would suffer greatly without Nico, I still am in awe of his size and remarkable speed for that size...doesn't he remind you of a Terrell Owens back in the day?

I'm happy you guys are 2-0, rooting for the Texans to be part of the Final 4 in the AFC, I think CJ Stroud is one of the most impressive and exciting young Quarterbacks in the NFL, best QB prospect to emerge since Mahomes IMHO and Stroud has a lot of room to grow and has a lot to prove in order to fill the comparison I just made but I see it

Some day I would like to see Stroud in person, Miami minus Tua will pay a visit sometime this season, that game just won't be the same now
Good luck this weekend vs Minnesota, I slightly lean towards the Vikings to win this game but will be watching it for sure as one of my 1:00-QuadBox on Youtube

Good to have you on board as always.

Last year, if I remember right Nico got hurt against the Bucs after 3 catches, and the stat line ended up Noa Brown 6/153/1, Tank Del 6/114/2, Dalton Schulz 10/130/1.
Nico was out the next week against the Bengals and the stat lines were Noah 7/172/0, Tank 6/56/1, Schultz 4/71/0.

I definitely think Tank or Diggs could step up if Noah Brown did. A lot of success is based on CJ and less on who is out there. But the receivers they have are capable there.

I would characterize the passing game issues so far as a combination of, for the Colts game at least not needing to throw a lot with the team rushing for 200 yards. And then a bit of struggling with stunts and blitzes from the offensive line. Even with that said, CJ is 7th in passing yards I believe.

I'm probably more worried about the latter, the O-line, than I am if Collins is out. I think CJ will find open receivers long as he has time. Just a matter of what kind of game is it on how much do they lean on his arm.

I could see more passing in this game with potentially Mixon and Pierce both out, so needing the passing game to carry things. That said, the Vikings lead the league with 11 sacks IIRC, so also possible the pass blocking I mentioned could show up as an issue.

Excellent!
I needed those stats when Collins was out last season
I still think his absence would be bad but I'm glad you give much of the credit to CJS, I agree with you.

-If i'm Houston, I might be looking for an OL to add to what they have. Not sure I've ever seen a team trade for a good OL in season, doesn't seem to happen often
Tunsil is in the middle of the pack, Howard the RT is a little below that but not the bottom either.
The Center-Patterson is in the bottom 5-6 right now.
Mason and Green are not holding up their end of the bargain either so the middle of this OL is highly questionable
None of this helps CJS

-One more thing I wanted to add although it deserves its own post/thread is DeMeco Ryans, they never say much on Monday Mornings and maybe that' good but he deserves massive credit for getting this Houston team turned around and on their way to success. I admire the man and the camera/video shot of him either winning the division or maybe the 1st Playoff game but I think it was the Division last year and he's in the tunnel after the game holding his clipboard or game plan and you see him reflecting on what he accomplished, what nobody thought they would accomplish and that image is etched into my head forever. Meaning I think Ryans will be a HC in this league for a long time

Very happy for the fan base here, much the same as I was for the Detroit Lions over the last 2-3 seasons
Fans deserved a. lot better than they got towards the end of O'Brien, the Watson fiasco, there was so much crap unfolding so fast it was hard to keep up
Now it looks stable and a place most guys in the NFL want to come and play for, that's valuable when trying to sign certain free agents in the off season
Houston could just as easily be 0-2 right now which is one reason I think they might lose to Minnesota but you never can gripe over a 2-0 start, good way to make it back to the Playoffs

Hou 2-0
Indy 0-2
Jax 0-2
Ten 0-2

The texans have a small fanbase for being one of the largest metro areas in the US. None of my coworkers ever talk about the texans, if anyone talks local football it is A&M or UT.

The saints have a much larger fan base despite the fact that new orleans is 1/6 of the size of Houston.

The astros have a decent fanbase, which means there is room for growth.

That makes sense after the way the franchise has rolled almost since the inception
I didn't know the fan base was that bad
My gut says they will start filling up that stadium at some point
But good to know i could come over for the Miami game and buy a ticket

Stroud is such a likable player too. Some of the miked up stuff from this week is just great.

Patterson is actually the backup center. Juice Scruggs is the starter. He played against Indy, was out last week against Chicago. Some of the radio guys who attend training camp have been high on Scruggs. He filled in at left guard for about half or a third of the season as they were about 3 deep on left guards who were injured, while Patterson played center.

Both Scruggs and Patterson are back practicing today, so hopefully we'll see some improved play at center again. Though your point about the line needing help is a good one, definitely.

Ouch. Hope this a wake up call because this hasn't been the same fun and exciting Texans team of 2023.

Pitiful game. Tunsil is supposed to be some all-world LT but the dude is a drive killer. Six penalties today. Never know if you could have stayed in the game because the guy can't decide whether he wants to get flagged for a false start or illegal formation.

Made him the highest paid Tackle in the league a year ago, bleh. BOB's trade gift that keeps on giving. Hopefully draft a replacement in the next draft and trade him in 2026.

Tunsil is extremely overrated. How he’s ever been a pro bowler is beyond me. The volume of penalties he is guaranteed for weekly is shockingly accepted by the coaches.

The entire OL is an embarrassment for Caserio. He’s spent so much time and draft capital on it for it to continue to be this bad. He’s got to try something different. I’m not sure if it’s more likely to expect a Tunsil false start or a failed Caserio OL drafting/signing at this point.

Collins is a impressive WR and I hope he stays healthy all season.

I disagree that if he missed time that another WR wouldn't take his role in the offense.

Stefon Diggs with Norv Turner as his offensive coordinator in his rookie season started out as the X WR in Norvs offense. He played the X WR role while Adam Thielen played the Z and more slot opportunities than Diggs when they played together. You look at Diggs and he isn't that tall or big but he is always open, has great hands and is very good at making contested catches despite that.

Diggs can play any and all WR positions and while he isn't Collins I think he would take over his role if Collins missed time.

Diggs had 10/94 yds today, didn't make much of a difference

The Vikings defense is good.

He was the only player doing anything until garbage time.

Opposition to drafting Fisher when we had Tunsil and Howard, may not age well. Assuming Fisher develops decently.

Eye-popping stat: The Texans' defense had a season-low pressure rate of 25% -- coming into Week 4, they ranked first in the NFL at 46%. As a result, they allowed Trevor Lawrence to have multiple TD passes for the first time this season. -- DJ Bien-Aime

Just saw Collins on the injury report. It's happening

Expected to play Sunday.

Also, leading the NFL in receiving yards.

Happy for your daughter MT and that she has seemed to avoid her injury curse. Nico may be the best WR in the league (I have Jefferson ahead of him but that's about it). What a beast.

She is happy, it looks she is going to get a win this week. We were driving back from Garner State Park during the game this week and did not get to watch the early games but I see that Diggs did not do much as the #2 considering there were 40 attempts.

I hope Dell comes back and looks like the player he was last season. He didn't look like he did last year even before he got hurt.

Ryans was more discreet about timelines for Mixon and Dell.

“Joe and Tank will be day to day this week,” Ryans said. “We will see how they progress throughout the week of practice.”

Ryans is optimistic about Christian Harris but said he will not be practicing this week.

“He’s still on the road to recovery,” Ryans said. “He’s doing well, on the right track. We’ll get him when we get him.”

The linebacker was placed on injured reserve before the season started with a calf injury, missed the first four games. Harris’ practice window to return could have opened this week, but Ryans said he’s not ready to do so barring any changes.

Mixon, Dameon Pierce, DE Derek Barnett (shoulder) and Tunsil (ankle) missed practice Wednesday.

DT Kurt Hinish and DE Dylan Horton started practicing. Horton beat Stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma.

No Von Miller now for the Bills, while he’s not what he once was he was still having a resurgence this year with 3 sacks, 2 TFL’s and 5 QB hits through 4 games. Should help us a little bit with keeping Stroud protected this weekend

Barnwell's first quarter of the season picks for various awards.

Defensive Rookie of the Year

1. Kamari Lassiter, CB, Texans
Pick: No. 42

One of the places the Texans rebuilt over the offseason was in the secondary, where Steven Nelson retired and Desmond King failed to make the 53-man roster. Coach DeMeco Ryans put his faith in his young guys, moving Jalen Pitre from safety to nickelback and putting two rookies in the starting lineup, with third-rounder Calen Bullock taking Pitre's spot at safety and Lassiter, the team's second-round pick, stepping in at outside corner.

Lassiter has been the pick of the bunch, immediately stepping in as one of the league's stingiest corners. Playing across from Derek Stingley Jr., Lassiter should be seeing plenty of targets, but he has only allowed opposing quarterbacks to go 4-of-12 for 123 yards with an interception, which came when he went off his own man in a scramble drill to pick off a Caleb Williams pass in Week 2.

NFL Next Gen Stats has Lassiter allowing a passer rating of 42.0 as the nearest defender in coverage, which leads all rookies with at least 50 snaps in coverage. His completion percentage over expected (CPOE) is also tops in the league (minus-15.2%). Lassiter is doing this while playing man on nearly 36% of his coverage snaps, the league's fourth-highest rate for any rookie cornerback so far. He hasn't been perfect -- Brian Thomas Jr. got him on a double move for a touchdown last week, only for Trevor Lawrence to miss the throw -- but in a season where there aren't many great rookie defenders through four games, he tops the list.

Offensive Player of the Year
3. Nico Collins, WR, Texans
Collins has been the league's most productive wide receiver through four games. After his breakout season in 2023, there were concerns he might not get the same opportunity to rack up big numbers. Tank Dell was returning from his fractured fibula, while the Texans had traded for another target-hungry receiver in Stefon Diggs.

Instead, Collins has separated from the rest of Houston's receivers and everyone else in football. He's being targeted at the league's 22nd-highest rate, but what he's doing with those targets is remarkable. He is 10 targets behind Nabers for the most of any receiver, but he tops the Giants wideout and everyone else by more than 100 receiving yards. He has four more first downs than anybody else, and the only wideouts converting targets into first downs at a higher rate are Chris Godwin and Chris Olave.

Collins doesn't quite have Nabers' volume, but he comes the closest while maintaining elite efficiency. He's also been at his best in key situations, leading the NFL in yards per route run on third down. In an offense in which C.J. Stroud is spoiled with options, Collins is the guy the star quarterback invariably looks for when he needs a conversion.

Also interesting is he has Jayden Daniels as his leading MVP candidate to date.

This was Demeco's 22nd game as a head coach.

14 of the 22 games were one score games, and Texans have gone 11-3 in them.

Game stat: Josh Allen's 30% completion rate (9 for 30) was the lowest by any QB in a game in the last 30 seasons (min 30 attempts).

That has always been worrisome and made me think the 2023 record was a bit of fool's gold. When does the pendulum swing and we start losing those? Hopefully never. It does say a lot for Stroud and his ability to win late though.

A pivotal part of Houston’s attack against Allen was its pass rush. The Texans were able to pressure the quarterback on nearly half of his dropbacks, which proved critical in making him uncomfortable. Allen completed only one of his 14 pass attempts under pressure Sunday, according to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats.

Hopefully they don’t look past the Pats, especially with Nico likely out this weekend. Never thought I would feel so nervous about a 4-1 start. Probably all the close one score games as already mentioned.

Wow. Jets fired Saleh as head coach.

I had badly wanted the Texans to get him as coach. Obviously happy with how it turned out with Demeco. But I just thought Saleh was such a great HC candidate.

Texans to face Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye in his first NFL start

The Houston Texans defense will face a rookie quarterback making his first NFL start Sunday, according to reports.

The New England Patriots will turn to Drake Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in April’s draft, to replace ineffective Jacoby Brissett, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday.

Maye will be the second rookie quarterback the Texans have faced this season. In Week 2, the Texans beat up on the Bears and No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, pressuring him on 47.9% of his dropbacks and sacked him seven times, the second-most they have recorded in a game in franchise history.
