How bad are you when a backup QB with torn ligaments is a better start (1 Viewer)

This is from another thread but deserves it's own. WOW!!!

Kneeless Gradkowski better than JaAwful?

Raiders coach Tom Cable said Monday that he is considering starting Bruce Gradkowski at quarterback against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Gradkowski would be playing with a torn ligament in each knee, yet Cable still seems to consider him a better option than JaMarcus Russell, who was demoted to second string a month ago. Russell, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, started the first nine games this season.

"Right now, it's about finding out where Bruce is," Cable said at his weekly news conference. "If, in fact, he's not ready to go, then how do we win the next three football games, period?"

Gradkowski has been the starter since Russell was benched Nov. 15. But Gradkowski likely won't be available against the Broncos as a result of the knee injuries he suffered in a 34-13 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

"At this point, we'll know come Wednesday," Cable said, "But it looks doubtful."

Gradkowski wasn't available for comment. He said Sunday that he wants to play against the Broncos and will do everything possible to make it a reality.

Cable said he is willing to wait until Wednesday before considering other options. Gradkowski played part of the first half with a torn ligament in one knee, so he has shown that it takes quite a bit to keep him off the field.

"I don't count myself out," Gradkowski said. "You never need surgery with MCLs. I'll try to get back, do whatever I can to get healthy fast."

Gradkowski can't heal quickly enough, as far as Cable is concerned. Otherwise, the coach's choices are Russell or No. 3 quarterback Charlie Frye, who still is seeking his first playing time of the season.

Russell was sacked six times in one half of action against Washington. He also had one pass intercepted and fumbled once. The Raiders' offense managed 39 yards on his watch.

"I'll do what's best for this team, what gives us the best chance to win" against the Broncos, Cable said.

Frye hasn't started a game since Oct. 12 last season, when he played for the Seattle Seahawks. He was traded to the Seahawks less than a week after making his lone 2007 start for the Cleveland Browns. He started 13 games in 2006.

Wide receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins said he and his teammates can't be consumed by the matter.

"It didn't matter who was back there throwing the ball," Higgins said. "It could be Coach Cable, it could be Al Davis, it could be anybody. It could be you. As a receiving corps, we go out there and our main job is to get where we're supposed to be. If the ball is not there, no matter who's throwing it, we're doing everything we can to catch the ball. No matter who's back there."

Running back Justin Fargas echoed the sentiment of his teammates, when he described how disappointing it was for Gradkowski to be hurt just as he was transforming the offense into a productive unit.

"Well, we were building something there," Fargas said, "But we can't let the momentum or fire be killed by that. We have to find a way to keep it going."

Notes: Tight end Zach Miller (concussion) and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (foot) are day-to-day, Cable said. Receiver/kick returner Nick Miller (shin) is expected to practice this week for the first time all season. However, he doesn't expect to play Sunday.

Why not Charlie Frye?

I always liked him. Below avg at all the physical tools, but very smart and determined. He could be good game manager, in a limited role. All he needs to do is get the ball to the playmakers in space. How hard is that?

Loserman is not what is needed.

But on the flip side, I am feeling more comfortable starting the Denver DST this weekend.

I was thinking of a role suitable for Russell as maybe a practice team QB. Trouble is, there isn't a QB in the league that he can come close to approximating in form and style.

If there was a practice QB needed to stand in for all time bust QB's like Akili Smith, Tim Couch, Jeff George, Ryan Leaf, etc. then Mr Russell could find his true calling. I think they should pay him, and then give him KP duty, cleaning the toilets and urinals in the Oakland Alameda Coliseum. With a dunce cap on.

Really doesn't seem fair too lump him(or Couch really) with Smith, Leaf and Russell. George was a pro-bowl caliber QB for several years. The only reason he washed out of the league was because of his attitude, he was a very good QB at his peak.As for the current Raiders. I can't knock the Losman signing. I wouldn't mind seeing Frye either. One idea that I think would be a good idea is to just snap the ball directly to McFadden, they need to find out about him anyway and judging by his days at Arkansas, he's at least as good a passer as Russell. Its not like their 2010 starting QB is on the roster right now anyway...at least I hope not for Raider fans sake.

I just realized we might be getting a tip off on who the qb is this week.

Russell is done as a NFL QB.
So was Alex Smith but Russell seems too lazy to put in the work he would need to to come around.
There were still a lot of folks thinking Smith had a shot to turn it around...he came from a spread and clearly wasn't ready. I wouldn't have wanted to put money on him, but I always believed he could come back and be relevant again.JaMarcus? Not so much. You'd be hard pressed to find five real FBG's who would give him better then a 3% chance to ever be a relevant NFL QB. I'd put his chances closer to 0%.

oakland gets cleveland in week 16, so I think off-the-marcus could be pretty valuable running the scout team as derek anderson.

in case they have to prepare for him.

Lane Kiffin must be laughing his ### off (yeah, I know he has his own issues).

"Russel is a great player. Get over it." Riiiiight Al.

You have to wonder what Kiffin might have been able to put together if he had been allowed to play a real NFL backup (yes, that would have been an improvement) caliber QB.

JaMarcus Russell has bigger breast than Jane Russell. To bad they didn't sign Loseman earlier he has his faults but is a major upgrade over current staff.

I think they should put McFadden in at QB and have Bush and Fargas in the backfield with him. Then run the old Arkansas offense that he's used to.

Yes, call me an LSU homer, but I think we need to see him sit out a while and get into a system and/or QB coach that will give him a swift kick in the ###. Oakland is not a situation that can develop a player with great talent and poor judgement. I'd like to see what a change of scenary can do for Russell.

Absolutely. Since Oakland has a surplus of RB's, put all 3 out there and let it all fly.

Would you consider Alex Smith relevant now?

Not liking Denver D QUITE as much now...
i don't know ... Frye should be good for some turnovers (Russell only had 2 INTs the first game against Denver this season ... although he was a laughable 12/21 for just 61 yards  )

This makes great sense. However, last I read OAK has him practicing at slot WR.Edit: Actually now that I think about if anything should happen to Frye in the DEN game watch Cable do just this rather than put JaPorkus back in.

 I am rolling with Denver this weekend.Frye hasn't passed for 200 yards since November 2006. In his last 5 starts over the past 4 years, he has maxxed out at 187 yards and has 3 TDs and 8 INTs. His last two games, he totalled 16-33 117 yards with 2 TDs and 3 INTs and 8 sacks. Not sure how in the world he got those two lucky TDs in a game where he passed for 83 yards on 23 attempts.Personally, JaMarcus sucks, but Frye doesn't scare me in the least. Yes, he had a couple good games, but the last of those was 3+ years ago.

Why not sign Tim Couch to mentor Russell...The Raiders would look just like my living room. One ratty old Couch, and one overpriced, discontinued Lazy-Boy.
