How do local affiliates determine what NFL games to show? (1 Viewer)

Indy stuck with Pitt/Cle

I really don't understand at all. Last week - the CBS affiliated in Indy showed Pitt/Detroit instead of the much better Balt/Cincy game (Cincy is only 110 miles from Indy, too). This week, it looks like Indy gets Pitt/Cle instead of the much better Ravens/Vikings game. This is an outrage (and, spare me the "Sunday Ticket" crap - many people can't afford that right now). Can someone explain why this is? It isn't like the Steelers are a divsion rival - or a team that is close to Indy like the Bears.

i think they ask themselves "what would piss off djcolts the most?"
 I'll switch between Giants/Saints and the Redzone channel - but I just think it seems wrong for Indianapolis-area residents to be stuck with watching Browns football when it seems unnecessary.

Station can usually do what it wants. Here they have a vote on the website, thankfully NYG always wins (lots of us in L.A.).

Maybe they don't like the Ravens in indy?

My logical guess is that the Steelers are the "alternate AFC team" in Indy because there are lots of Steelers fans. It still seems ridiculous to show two "awful" games in a row when it seems unnecessary.

I was stuck with Giants/Raiders for the early game in ATL. They switched to Ravens/Bengals in the second half, tho.

The do it based on popularity, and the Steelers have one of the broadest fan bases around, as do the Giants. Follow the money.

dj, you're welcome to come out to my house Sunday. I've got the Ticket and plenty of food and beverages. Just 20 minutes from Indy, bro.

I don't know what the RZ channel is like on cable, but I find it is amazing on the Ticket! I usually watch it most of the time. But I have 25 FF teams too. :goodposting:

Let me know.

It's because the Browns have the largest backer organization in the world. Obviously they didn't want to deprive you again after screwing you out of Cle/Buf.

CBS has the AFC games. So in Indy they will show Colts games when they are playing another AFC team either home or away as long as the game in not the Sunday or Monday night games which belong to NBC and ESPN respectively. If the Colts are playing an away game at a NFC team then CBS gets to televise the game (the visiting teams network get the game).

If the Colts are playing at home vs a NFC team then Fox gets to televise the game.

The local station (Fox or CBS) gets to decide what game to show that fits the above criteria. Since the Ravens are playing at Minn the CBS station could televise that game in Indy if it chooses too. I'm guessing they choose Pittsburgh because they are the SB Champs and have a national following and think it will get better ratings.

And of course the NFL Network gets it Thursday games later in the season and the 'flex' games come into play later too.

Just be glad you only have one "local" team. I live about 300 miles north of San Francisco, so I get all of the 49'ers and all of the Raiders games, and I'm not a fan of either team.

No idea how they decide. In Dallas, we get all NFC East games (unless 2 at once) (on FOX who gets NFC) and the stupid Patriots. I have yet to meet another person in Dallas who either likes or dislikes the Patriots. But we get them every single week on CBS (who gets AFC coverage)

My big complaint is that we live relatively close to Houston. Why do we have ot watch NE when we could watch a team that many people in Dallas are fans of? Heck, I'd have loved a subpar Steelers game lol.

(although the DEN/NE OT was exciting. I'm just sick of watching NE.)

We got Pit/Det last Saturday in Orlando with the Jags playing at 4:15. This week, the Jags are at home, which means they're blacked out. We're getting Baltimore/Minnesota this week at 1:00. I imagine they simply show whichever game they think will garner the most viewers.

BTW, has anyone else had any trouble with those maps lately? I don't know if the coding changed on the website, or if my JavaScript is FUBAR, or what, but it was working fine a few weeks ago.

The CBS affiliate here always shows the Chiefs, as they are considered our "home team."

Back in the day, whenever they had a doubleheader, or the Chiefs were playing a night game, the affiliate would call the manager at a sports bar here in town and ask him what game they should broadcast. So this guy who worked at a sports bar decided what game was going to be shown on CBS in our market if the Chiefs weren't an option.

And this guy is a huge Bear's fan, so if their game happened to be on CBS, we'd get the Bears game broadcast.
