How do you all handle IR players? (1 Viewer)

There is a brewing controversy in my league... I am the commish. I have Andre Johnson who has been hurt for weeks and I have him on IR. ESPN (which stinks, yes my fault for using it) lists him as doubtful and not out. Some are clamoring that I must remove him from IR because he isnt "out". Now we all know he won't play this week.

Earlier in the season, Brandon Jacobs wasn't playing but was listed as questionable each week until friday or so... I didn't require the owner to remove him from IR... As commish then, I proposed then that a player had to come off IR if he played the previous week or was not listed as doubtful or out on Friday.

What do you all do?

Keep AJ on IR until he plays?

Force an owner to remove him because he isn't listed as out today (but clearly isnt going to play)

the main ? is when does a player have to be removed from IR (played in game vs. status on injury report)

Only leagues I would allow IR on is keeper/dynasty leagues. As in the NFL, IR is for players who are injured and will not play again for the year. With that said, they must come off IR when they play a preseason game or if they start the NFL season on your roster.

As for your question, you should activate him once he declared questionable or better. A questionable player might play and out player is out.

Here are our procedures for handling IR:

INJURED RESERVE

You can have up to one player on IR. In order for a player to be moved to IR one of the following conditions must be met:

· He is denoted as Out on Friday’s final official injury report if he has a Saturday, Sunday or Monday game, or

· He is denoted as Out on Wednesday’s injury report and he has a Thursday game (in which case he must be moved to IR by game time), or

· He is placed on IR by his NFL team. When this occurs, you may move him to IR immediately.

You may only move a guy onto IR if he was on your active roster when he got hurt, or if he was on your active roster when he got placed on PUP. You may NOT pick up a previously-injured player, move him to IR, and then pick up another player. (This doesn't preclude you from picking up an injured player - he just has to stay on your active roster.) The spirit of IR is to ensure a GM does not get penalized (due to our small rosters) when a guy on his active roster gets hurt. It is not supposed to be a mechanism where a GM picks up an injured player, stashes him on IR and then picks up another player, in effect getting an extra roster slot.

A player who has been suspended cannot be moved to IR. You cannot move a guy to IR the week he is injured – even in obvious cases (unless he is placed on the NFL IR list) - until the Friday injury report is released, usually around 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. While an argument can be made that a guy breaking his leg is an obvious case, there are too many times where the “call” on a concussion, hamstring injury, etc., isn’t decided until Friday. To be fair and consistent, IR moves must wait until the final injury report. If you miss the opportunity to move a guy to IR who is listed as Out in “week X”, no matter what the injury is you must still wait for the final Friday injury report in “week X+1” before you can move him to IR. In other words, if one of your players gets listed as “Out” on a Friday injury report and you don’t move him to IR before our rosters freeze at noon on Sunday, you can NOT move him to IR until he’s confirmed as Out on the following Friday’s report (unless he’s on the NFL IR list). Once a player is moved to IR, he must stay on IR for at least one week. You can keep him on IR as long as he’s listed as Out on the final report each week; however, you must immediately either move him back to your active roster or release him once he’s reflected as Probable, Questionable or Doubtful on the Friday injury report (or removed completely from the list).

I used to have an IR spot for players listed as Doubtful or Out but found too many people putting ineligible players on IR and I had to constantly check it so I finally got rid of it.

In the NFL, a player goes on IR only if he's out for the year. Not sure why you have an IR slot for active players, regardless of their weekly status. If a player is hurt for a few weeks, go to your bench. You shouldn't be able to add an extra player to your roster just because a guy is hurt for a few weeks IMO.

Depends on the size of your bench. Our IR Rule allows you to move them there is they are listed as OUT. If you have a short bench you could lose a lot of players just because you have a lot of injuries. That wouldn't be really fair either.

XIII) INJURED RESERVE

Definition: An owner may put a player on injured reserve and replace that player with a free agent and still retain rights to the injured player. To place a player on injured reserve at least one of the following must occur:

· It must be reported from a reliable news media source (i.e. Newspaper, ESPN, etc.) that the player will miss at least two weeks.

· The player is listed as OUT or DOUBTFUL for the upcoming game in the weekly injury report released by the NFL.

· The player has missed the last two games due to an injury.

· The player is placed on injured reserve by his NFL team.

Activation: Once a player on injured reserve plays the owner must activate or drop the player by the start of the next week. Failure to do so will result in that player becoming a free agent. A player may be activated before he plays if there is a chance he might play in the upcoming game. The deadline to activate a player for the week is by kickoff of that player’s game. A player who is out for the season cannot be part of a starting line-up. Once placed on injured reserve a player must remain on injured reserve for at least a week before being activated.

Why would you have an IR slot for a player put on IR by their team when you can drop them? (unless its a keeper league)

We dont have to activate them until the following week (if they end up playing)

FF IR is not the same as NFL IR> We have an extra IR slot on our team.. Essentially you drop a player (put him on IR) if a player is out. No one can pick him up then, and allows you to pick up another player in his place. Its actually pretty neat and adds some more strategy if you think about it.

In my league, we used to have the following rule: if a player was ruled "out" on an injury report, you could IR him. You could then keep him on IR until the week after he'd played in his first game following his injury, at which point you had to drop him or drop someone else.

Unfortunately, people were lax about activating players from IR when they had to, and the commissioner got tired of patrolling it, so we eliminated IR and expanded roster sizes from 14 to 16.

I'm saying there should be no IR slot at all. The problem with having an IR slot for players that are ruled out is that many NFL teams don't rule players out until game day and it gives unfair advantages to teams whose players are ruled out earlier in the week.

My keeper league uses a bright line rule to avoid any messes like you are dealing with: Only way a player can go on IR in our league is if the NFL team places him on IR. So, if an owner that has someone like S-Jax he has to basically keep him on his roster, or cut him. He can't place him on IR since the Rams have not. Meanwhile, players like Cadillac, Leinart, Delhomme, and Deuce have been placed on IR this season since their teams have put them on IR.

In my $$ league we can utilize an "Injury Move" for any player listed as "Out" on the official NFL injury report. A desired move must be called in or emailed to the commish by 10:00p.m. on Friday stating who you wish add to your roster for your "Out" player...1st choice, 2nd choice, etc.

Based on Waiver Wire order the moves are doled out. Once a player's status is upgraded from "Out" the owner must notify the commish by that Friday deadline who he will be dropping from his roster- the newly upgraded player or the one that was picked up for him via the injury move.

BTW, undrafted players cannot become keepers for next season.

to clarify, we have a keeper league with a short bench

The question I should have clarified is not who can be put on IR but when does a player have to be removed from IR (played in game vs. status on injury report)

in my keeper league a player must be listed a doubtful or Out in order to be placed on IR.

I agree though...no IR for redraft leagues.

we play it where you can place a player on IR if he's listed as out or doubtful. Being on IR means the player is inactive and unavailable to start.

Regardless if his official NFL status changes, that player can remain on IR until he plays in a game. Once he does though, he must be taken out of the IR spot and put back to active status.

I find my owners are very responsible with it. But we're all +30. IR isn't for every league.

Since we use the Friday's official NFL injury report to decide for that weekends games. If he's no longer "Out" he must go back on the active roster and either he or the player picked for him must be cut.

The league that this applies to is a $200 12-team modified keeper league with small rosters. Modified meaning you're allowed to carry over five players off of your end of season roster but you're only allowed to keep two - they must be declared 24 hours before the draft starts the next year (you can trade any of your carryovers for other players or picks once you've paid in full). We have small rosters by design - 15 total slots and you must start 1 QB, 1TE, 1 K, 1 Defense, 1 Special Team and ANY combination of 5 RBs/WRs (can be all RBs, all WRs or any combo in between). Scoring system has been tweaked to balance out scoring between RBs and WRs. Once rosters freeze on Sunday, no player can be picked up until the following Weds night - then, our process is two-tiered: 1) teams can bid (real cash) for a player, 2) after bidding is done, all players can be picked up for free (unlimited moves). No player dropped this week can be picked up again until the following week (unless he was available at the start of free agency/bidding, was picked up and then subsequently dropped). Basically, our procedure ensures that all 12 teams have an equal shot at getting any player any week. No worst to first, etc. IMO injuries can put a GM into an unfair position, particularly during heavy Bye weeks - even if you've done a good job of managing your Bye week exposure. Plus, as commish I want to encourage live bidding as this increases the pot distributed at the end of the year. This tends to add $200-300 each year. Having an IR slot helps towards that goal. Our IR rules are fairly strict, they've been in place for several years and they've worked well for us. I run the league and haven't had too many issues/concerns about overseeing this aspect. That said, I understand a lot of leagues are against it .... to each their own.

1 league we are not allowed to use IR. If a player goes on IR we can drop that guy for free and pick up a replacement.

Other league we can use the IR if someone is listed as "doubtful" or "out". If listed as "doubtful" on Wednesday and you IR him and pick someone up, then on Friday upgraded to "questionable" you have to remove him from your IR. Lots of work for not much reward as pick ups usually are spot starters, no one really good.
