Smarter populace.
Or just more willing to allow for order and intrusion. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Order is very much a European concern, written into their politics. Our concerns generally start with freedom and equality. Russell Kirk, famous American conservative, was very much an "order" guy to the point that he wrote essays and tracts about how theoretically order was the silent precursor to freedom. But Kirk never took off in America, either theoretically or politically (a conservative Luddite, he ran for President as a socialist in 1944).

I mean...yes, freedom is our thing and that’s cool but this is so beyond stupid I can’t even believe it’s happening. Saying you want to protect muh freedoms in the middle of a pandemic because your idiot aunt on Facebook said a mask is the government trying to control you is just beyond belief.

Yeah, we totally agree on that. I've always been, both politically and spiritually, very optimistic about America and the American project. I would be lying if I said this hasn't almost fundamentally changed some of my views about my previously held beliefs. It's been staggering -- it's one of the most disappointing eye-openers I've ever experienced, and I don't say that lightly. Just...stunning and color me stunned.

I always had a hunch that a huge percentage of the population was just awful (combination of willfully ignorant, selfish or just plain mean) and these past few months have just confirmed it.

It’s the most disappointed I’ve ever been. People went off to war and died, literally died on a beach or suffered life-altering injuries for this country and to help other countries and we can’t even protect our neighbors with common sense, safe protocols. GD it now I’m mad again.

Yep. Or walked through minefields, or curtailed live bombs with hands in the name of America during -- what some would call -- questionable wars, or went on rations at home for butter and other goods. But they sacrificed. They did. And we can't wear a mask in public.

It's just galling to me. I'm mad again, too. I'd better leave this thread to baseball.

So teams can cheat and be World Series champs but Pete Rose is still banned from the HOF, baseball sucks.

Bregman sucks but throwing up at his head is pretty messed up. Wasn’t Kelly on the Red Sox team that cheated?
Yeah Kelly was on the Red Sox in 2017.  I don’t think he was throwing at anyone.  He lost all control after the 2018 season.  The pitch that almost hit Correa was an 80 mile an hour curve.

Either way at least he owned it. I was hoping Walker would’ve plunked Springer with the first pitch of the game

ridiculous...............
Repeat offender and he acted like a #####.  If you want to send a message don't throw at a guys head.  Drill him in the wallet or kidney and call it good.   Not to mention all players were probably warned about this exact circumstance.

8 games is a bit much in a 60 game season but a suspension isn't ridiculous

I get that, but he never hit anyone and chirped back after the Houston dugout chirped at him. If you want to give him a couple of games for the pitch and because he is a repeat offender (although anyone around long enough will eventually be a repeat offender I suppose) , fine, but 8 is too many in a 60 game season. What did MLB was going to think was going to happen when the Astros got nothing? ( I get they could not suspend the players as they had immunity)

ridiculous...............
not if mlb is really trying to keep these guys away from each other. even if nothing comes of it health wise, bad optics if teams start clearing benches this season.

i think this was more of a warning to the entire league rather than something totally punitive against Kelly. the season feels like it's just waiting to be canceled. don't want it going out that way.

Players are absolutely ripping the suspension of Joe Kelly to shreds. These players HATE the Astros. Ive never seen such vitriol towards a team by players.

Then they should have suspended any Astros that were over the 3rd base line over by the Dodgers dugout.

There are pitchers that have lost their jobs now thanks to the cheating sobs so f the Astro’s.

I’m not a big enough baseball guy to understand the ins and outs or roster moves etc but....

What’s to stop teams that have to play the Astros from just bringing up nobody pitchers to plunk a few guys in the first inning(s)?

Exactly.  Dodgers have some dude in A ball that throws 100.  Have him plunk Correa, Springer or Bergman and get sent back down to serve out his suspension.  He may never make the majors but he’ll be a Dodgers legend.

Dodgers up 4-2 in the 13th.  Because of the runner on second rule they pitched around the first batter and walked him.  Should have just buried one in his rib cage.

Pride in the game, moving on over something that's over.  Realizing that stealing signs is nothing new and has been done by every team from the start of the game.  Not pouting over spilled milk...…..

The only specific guy mentioned in that article and the one that is suing MLB because his "career was ended" was Mike Bolsinger.  His stats are the following:

Career Numbers (4 yrs & 48 games):

  • ERA:  4.92
  • WHIP:  1.513
  • Record:  8-19
2017 Numbers:

  • 41.1 Innings
  • 48 Hits
  • 29 ER
  • 27 BB
  • 39 K's
  • 6.31 ERA
  • 1.815 WHIP
  • 0-3 Record
He faced Houston one time and pitched 5.1 IP in relief giving up 6 hits, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 K's for a game ERA of 5.68 (better than his overall ERA for 2017).  In addition he pitched three more games after facing Houston before getting emoted. *****  Added.....he faced them a second time and gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in 1/3 of an inning.  So his total line against the Astros in 2017 was 5.67 IP, 10 H, 8ER, 4 BB, and 7 K's.  Right in line with the rest of his 2017.

So how was facing the Astros the end of his career?  He was a below average pitcher that pitched the same against Houston as he did the rest of the league.

ETA:  The guy was a middling pitcher that hung on for a few years and wasn't good enough to continue in the majors.  He is using this as an excuse to try and get some money.  There is no merit to his claim that the Astros ended his career.

ETA #2:  That was his only career appearance against the Astros and he didn't even take the loss.  He actually pitched better in that game (statistically) then his overall numbers for that entire year (2017).  There is just no evidence at all that facing the Astros ended his career.

ETA#3:  Bolsinger did face the Astros one time I missed.  He gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in 1/3 of an inning.  It was his last appearance for the Blue Jays.  The stats of that outing fall in line with the rest of his performances for 2017.  He finished with a 6.31 ERA.  That is why he was released.  He was a terrible pitcher by that time.  It was not because the Astros cheated.

His numbers were actually better against Houston than it was for the rest of his 2017 season so it actually improved his numbers for the year.  How again did facing Houston end his career?

What are you talking about? That was the last game he pitched in the majors. He threw 0.1 inning allowed 4H, 3BB, and 4ER.
