how do you get your breaking news? (1 Viewer)

just joined this site after a couple years away and am happy to be back!

i'm wondering how everybody gets breaking news about their team/watched players?

specifically i'm looking to get email alerts when there is important news about one of my players. for instance, if one of my starters goes down, i need to know ASAP so i can find a replacement if necessary. rotoworld has this function for subscribers. email alerts work great since i will get notified of relevant news as opposed to just checking out the news sites on a regular basis waiting for something to happen.

any thoughts? how do you keep in the loop with breaking news?

A lot of people seem to not understand or not want to get on Twitter.

But as a news feed and for breaking news there is nothing better and it's not even close IMO.

If it can be confirmed from multiple reliable sources. Otherwise it might as well be a SP hype thread on steroids.

Agreed.

I only get the news from my feed, and I've only subscribed to team beat writers and national NFL guys (Schefter, LaCanfora, Mort, etc.).

I'm not looking for anything from FratDooosh69 tweeting from his phone in the stadium parking lot.

Twitter...if you follow the correct people, there is nothing better. Stuff you hear about there is so much earlier than anywhere else.

True........as with any info, source credibility is huge. But it's not difficult to distinguish between credible and non-credible IMO.

Instead of everyone saying "Twitter" can we list some people that you guys follow? I rarely use Twitter but I've been interested in getting more into it. Besides the obvious ones:

@JasonLaCanfora

@AdamSchefter

@mortreport

@JayGlazer

Who else is out there that's very credible and fast with their news?

there's a thread for twitter people to follow. If you roll with the PFWA and staff members here, that's a pretty great start.

Twitter is the greatest source of information since the internet and it's almost real time.

You want to save time this site or Rotoworld do just fine as they typically will carry the major news at some point. But twitter is real time,I often read something on Twitter that is a nice nugget of info that will find it's way on Rotoworld but can take a day or two. And some nuggets of info never make it. If you've got the time nothing trumps Twitter.

I don't think "Twitter" answers the question of how do you get instant information about the specific players on your team.

Twitter gives you instant information, but it isn't nearly as targeted of info as the OP is seeking.

Agreed. Rotoworld does a good job of getting info out fairly quickly and being accurate and reliable.

Twitter is targeted based on who you follow. I follow Shefter, Mort, Jay Glazer and some of the prominent NFL guys as well as some of the FF guys I respect AND certain beat writers for the teams of players on my roster.

Without knowing the OPs roster I wouldnt suggest the exact people he should be following but it's really not that hard to figure out.

Twitter can also be a bit too quick to jump on a "Story". I wait for some sort of confirmation or trusted source before making any rash decisions to your roster over twitter news. Stories spread quickly and are in some situations not true or the whole truth.

I'll add Sportspyder as a great player resource. You can search a player and find all current news, articles and tidbits on them. It's a bit overwhelming at times but a great resource nonetheless.

orignal poster here.... good info, thanks!

but still nothing here for me. i don't want to read an overall news feed. i want news just for my roster or a selected player list. also, i'd like the news to come to me (via a rss feed or email alerts)-- that way i don't have to check twitter to see if someone tore their ACL and rather i can just be alereted when a specific player on my team tore their ACL. with the info coming to me i think i'll be able to respond quicker on the waiver wire. make sense?

That's a great idea, but I don't think there's an option for single player news alerts anywhere. If someone has the IT skills and resources to make that happen, it would be a nice venture to dive into though... fantasy owners would be all over that.

ETA: Actually google has an interesting feature called Google Alerts were you can get emails with news updates that fit your search query. You could add each player in your roster and add the word injury for instant updates if something comes up with that players name and injury... I've never used it and I'm not sure how effective it is but it could be something to try.

per my first post --- rotoworld has the option for subscribers. it was awesome! i miss that feature with them, but that's about all!

Oh... hmmm see my edit above, that could be an option.

This was going to be my post as well. Everyone wants to be the first to break news that most don't seem to fact check enough and what seemed like great info has now just caused panic for no reason. I'm not saying this is the case for all obviously but it's the one downfall to twitter.

Twitter list of beat writers, took me about an hour to quickly put one that I like together. Went through Bloom's and FantasyPro's and some other lists people had and picked out guys that usually only Tweet about the NFL and not the other sports so I can avoid the clutter during the season. It was great for me during training camps, updates on ever player getting hurt or having a good/bad camp. Not to mention play-by-play of scrimmages and coach/player comments.
