Honestly, most charities are so poorly run (I have dealt the banking side of many well know organizations for years), I donate very little.  I also figure that I have a little brother that makes minimum wage and lives paycheck to paycheck.  I would rather invest in him than strangers.

generously, more than 10% - my daughter and gf contribute, as well.

it's one of the lessons i'm most proud of being able to teach her.

as to sbonomo's point - the charities we decide to kick to must have superb reputations, along with damn near impeccable track records in regards to disseminating coin judiciously.

Any tips/sites on how to find these charities?

my gf does the digging, and my daughter has chipped in (she has her own tablet/cpu since turning 12) - great majority are Children's charities, the only one i personally researched was St. Vincent DePaul (a Catholic charity) - childhood friend of mine is a Pastor over in Jersey, and we visit bi-monthly for Mass/contributions.

St. Jude's is always a great place to start, though ... can't say enough about the amazing work they do (we know two girls who are both battling cancer, and my daughter is very good friends with one).

Does church count? If so, my % is still too low and something I'm not tremendously proud of.

I tend to 'donate' more to the schools that my kids go to. Things like a couple weeks ago, my daughter's elementary school said they have a shortage of pencils, I ordered a bunch (300) and sent them over. I'd rather spend the money than have the teachers spend $$$ out of their paychecks.

Need an ****Official Charity Thread*****.... I posted this in the other one.

Anyone familiar with Alternative Gifts International (or another service/website like it)?

I want to give my kids gift cards for charity where they get to pick out how the money is spent. I like that this place has an actual catalog and shows the tangible return on your donation. I think that helps get kids more involved. Any other sites like this?

This.  My wife is the only person to graduate college in her entire family.  They struggle, we help.

Goodwill gets $1000's in kids clothes/toy's/furniture each year.  Otherwise we stopped most charity donations and use it to help them.

not so much money because hey brohans and i know that this might shock a few of you i do not have a lot of the green stuff but i try to do a lot of charity work every year i think that the value of a man is how much they will do for others without reward basically its a big step on the path of the brohan so that is what i am about and in the spirit of the season i encourage everyone to pitch in and increase the good take that to the bank bromigos

I work for a non profit. So, I give my blood, sweat, and tears. That wasn't a poll option.

But, I agree with what others post. They are poorly run. Most people in my organization say one thing and do the exact opposite. I've been asked to falsify information and had people say "we didn't have this conversation". I spent 15 years in the fraud industry before this. At times, it feels like I never left.

I guess it's like making sausage. The end result tastes good, you just don't want to see how it's made.

Better maximize your donations this year as the tax incentive is gone now with this tax bill.  A vast majority of American's who now itemize no longer will.

You want the # on my taxes or the actual #?

(I mean mine are the same of course, but maybe others are less honest than myself...   )
