How Much Further Past Marino Will Manning Go? (1 Viewer)

Manning - 9 Seasons (144 Games)

144 Games - 3131 Completions out of 4890 attempts (64%)

37,586 Yards

275 TDs

139 Ints

13 Rushing TDs

16 Fumbles Lost

Marino - 10 Seasons (151 Games)

151 Games - 3128 Completions out of 5284 attempts (59%)

39,502 yards

290 TDs

165 Ints

6 Rushing TDs

In the comparison above, Manning has 7 fewer games. Total TDs is 288 for Manning, 296 for Marino. Manning could certainly catch and surpass Marino in the next seven games. Yards wise, Marino is still ahead by almost 2,000 yards, but Manning could close that gap realistically within 7 games.

Manning's completion percentage is far better than Marino's. He also takes care of the football better. Manning seems to be poised to go down as the greatest QB of all time if he keeps his career going long enough.

I think we are very fortunate to be witnessing what we are in this era of football. Manning will go down as the greatest QB to play the game. He now has the ring to prove it.And we also got to watch, imo, the greatest TEAM of all time in the Patriots for the years they won 3 in 4.

Take it back to the beginning of the 90's and we've been able to watch the Cowboys 3 in 4, the Broncos back to back, the Pats 3 in 4, and the Bills 4 straight. I don't care if they lost all 4, making it to the dance 4 straight years is damn impressive. We saw Rice in the tail end of his prime. And although Sweetness is one of the greatest, an argument could be made for LT, Emmitt and Barry as all time greats. We've seen two of the all time corners in Bailey and Deion. Also have a MLB that will join the great MLB before him in Ray Lewis. Just a great era of football and for younger fans that started to watch the game in the 90's, they are spoiled rotten.

wrong premise...the question should read:

"How much further past Favre will Manning go" if you're interested in setting the records...

I understand that Favre needs to play and not get injured, but his track record indicates that he's pretty durable, so playing the games shouldn't be a problem now that he's "all in" on the '07 season....the numbers:

--------------Marino--Favre--All Time

______________________________

attempts: --- 8358---8224.....1-2

completions: 4967---5021.....2-1

yards:------61,361--57500....1-2

TD's---------420------414......1-2

3861 yds and 6 TD's to pass #1...Favre has passed OVER 3881 10 of 15 seasons starting, including the last 3

this will Favre's last year, and he'll raise the bar ever so slightly---the TD total falls for sure and the yardage goes if he plays all 16 games...

...he's arrogant enough to pull this off

As a Dolphin Hater, it's tough but, I'd have to agree with Miami fans who will tell you Dan never had much of a running game or defense....

In an age without a salary cap, Fin Mgt and Don Shula really blew it.

I feel lucky to have seen all of Dan's Career - while also happy as a hater to never see them win.

But, I think at a time where the NFL was way behind where it is now, Dan brought a lot of fans to the game. As a younger kid, watching Dan was a treat and one of the biggest reasons I became a Fan.

Marino was his own worst enemy when it came to lack of running game.He constantly changed plays away from runs and singlehandedly made it impossible to develope a running ame while he ruled the roost.

NO, maybe it was tony nathan, lorenzo hampton, sammie smith, mark higgs, bernee parmalee, cecil collins, etc.... I am obviously a Marino fan, but not a dolphins fan! Their draft picks from 1984-1989 were absolutely horrible. If Peyton stays healthy then he will pass Marino's records by alot! Favre will have to play in more games than Marino to break them.

FAVRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe Theismann was on Dan Patrick's horrible radio show today at 1:24 EST. (I switch over when Sirius NFL radio is at a commercial break.) :bag: Joey T. said that because of the Super Bowl win last night, Manning is now "better" than Marino.

Now, I love the UT Vols, and I admire all of Manning's accomplishments, but....

My guess is he had them neck and neck but the super bowl put Manning over the edge. It is something that will loom over Marino. I do think it help completes a player.. Especially at QB since you touch almost every snap..

Realistically, Manning needs to play (5 + # of seasons Favre continues to play) to set all the records. Considering that number is at least 6, and that Manning will be 31 going into this season, he may break the records, but I doubt it will be by a large margin, and there is at least a decent chance he will come up short.

I think it helps, but definetely does not complete a player. Some players especially couldn't help that he played on terrible teams with no running game or defense. Free agency did not come along until much later in his career, and he wanted to bring a world championship to miami but Management screwed that up with terrible decisions and drafts. Manniing always had the tools around him, so he helped his legacy with a super bowl win.

I think having a running game behind you both helps and hurts the passer's stats. Marino padded his stats out of necessity. Manning has handed the ball off more which, in turn, has limited his stats.

However, the presence of a rushing attack opens up opportunities in the passing game.

So, all in all, there is no way to say Manning is better or worse for having good RBs behind him, IMO.

Favre will own all the records soon. Manning needs to stay healthy to get there.
 Favre is the measuring stick, unless the original post is regarding how close Manning can get to records Favre has broken, comparing him to Marino is pointless.

NFL MVPs

Favre - 3

Marino - 1

Advantage: Favre

Rushing

Favre - 1774 yards

Marino - 87 (yep, you read that right)

Advantage: Favre

Passing

Completions - Favre

Completion Percentage - Favre

Attempts - Marino

Yards - Marino

Advantage: Favre (Marino benefited from quantity, not performance in this scenario)

Total TD's (Pass/Rush incl.postseason)

Favre - 462

Marino - 462

Advantage: Favre - he passes Marino this season

Years with 30+ Pass TD's

Favre - 8

Marino - 4

Advantage: Favre

Longest Span Between 30+ TD Pass Seasons

Favre - 2 years

Marino - 7 years

Advantage - Favre This is the nail in the coffin which clearly demonstrates Favre's sustained excellence thoughout his career. Marino was good early, then just accumulated numbers.

Super Bowls

Favre - 2 with 1 win

Marino - 1 with 0 wins

Advantage: Favre

Playoff record

Favre - 11-9 Won more than he lost

Marino - 8-10 Lost more than he won

Advantage: Favre

16 Games Played in a Season

Favre - 14 out of 16

Marino - 11 out of 17

Advantage: Favre (hell, I threw in his first year with ATL just to try and let Marino look a little better)

Best Restaurant I've eaten at:

Advantage: Marino's in St. Pete OK, OK, so I haven't been to Brett's place in WI, and I am sure its better....but I have eaten at Dan's and its not bad. Besides, this has been such a complete whitewashing something had to be done.

There you have it. Comparing Manning to Marino is as good as comparing him to Tony Eason or Todd Blackledge because if he is to be considered the best, he must be compared with the best and that's Favre.

When you talk about setting career records it is difficult because you don't know how long Manning will have the desire to play. I know Favre haters say he keeps playing for the records but I simply do not believe that. I feel Favre is just one of those guys whom football is his life and his interest and he really wants to play football more than anything else so he keeps playing. Some players are just the opposite (think Tiki Barber) and they have interests outside of football and they are more ready to step away from the game earlier. I honestly have no idea how I think Peyton Manning fits into this equation.

Manning is obsessed with football. I don't see him retiring early because of being tired of football.

:bye: Pretty much everytime I hear Manning talking about the game he just seems so in love with football.

He could easily be Barbered though and roll off to a lucrative desk job covering football.
