How much notice should I give? (1 Viewer)

A little background:

My wife is currently pregnant and due in the next 10 days with our third. Our state allows the father to take up to ten weeks off at a reduced rate (max of $700 a week or so) up to a year after the birth of a child. I am in the middle of a project that should wrap at the end of August, I manage a team of three others and am heavily involved in day-to-day operations. My wife wants to take an extended leave after having this kid (our last) and I want to move to an area closer to my folks. We've got a downpayment saved up and I'd like some time with my kids. I have a fairly good relationship with my boss, although we're not friends outside of work. He heavily relies on me and is both probing about me taking any time off after the kid is born and makes a reference a day to six to twelve month plans in my group and the entire organization.

If I didn't care at all, I'd work to August 30th, take my time and look for a different job and put in my notice that I wouldn't be coming back during my leave. I'm not comfortable doing this. I'd like to let him know next week that I'd be departing at the end of August. However, I don't want to screw myself out of Paid Family Leave. This is not a program that the employer pays out of pocket, it's a program funded by deductions from employee's paychecks. You do have to be employed though (if I'm reading the law correctly). I don't want to go to him with this plan and have him let me go August 29th. At the same time, my team will be short while I'm out and giving a headsup to replace me in August, instead of October is really going to help in Q4. If it was my company, I'd want to know that the person in my position was planning on leaving earlier, rather than later.

My wife thinks I'm nuts to do anything more than give two weeks.

Take the leave, look for jobs while on said leave, and give notice when you’re ready to start other job.
