When I say luck, I mean luck as in stuff that the head coach has no control over when he gets the job, such as the players he already has on the roster. How much blame should like on the head coach in his first year or two?
The reason I bring this is up because teams are quick to fire a head coach and look for the next guy when the next guy might or might not be the solution. I won't bring up many specific examples, but if you look at teams like the Saints and Jets this year, did Payton and Mangini really do that much to change those teams around or were those teams "set up" and had the players and schemes in place to have a winning season? What about Romeo Crennel? Is he a bad coach or is that team just bad? See what I mean? I think sometimes it's hard to determine if it's the head coach or just the team in general and what as in place before he got there.
Thoughts?
