I don't want to go into the other threat because I'm afraid of spoilers. What do you think it will gross? I've heard estimates of $2 billion. Disney paid $4 billion for the franchise.

I've read that if it doesn't make at least 1.5 billion it will be considered a failure. Industry tracking is pointing to 2.5 billion in ticket sales.

Star Wars movies will be coming out forever with Disney. Spin offs of characters, prequels, Ewoks, etc, etc. Take the Xmen movies combined and multiply it by 9672058. That is how many movies Disney will produce relative to Star Wars. I think it will easily crush any December opening and break $3B if it is good. I can't see a scenario where this doesn't do over $1.5B, even if it's bad. I could see this movie still being in theaters next football season.

An absurdly big amount. Disney basically has to make 2 movies to make back their investment. Everything after that (including the merch) is gravy

It sold 8 times as many tickets as the previous record holder on the first day of sales in October.

By November 20th, Star Wars had already made $50m in ticket sales, with still almost a month to go before the movie opened.

The $50m already doubled the previous record, which was Dark Knight Rises, and the $25m for Dark Knight Rises was all the way up until opening where as Star Wars still had almost a month to go.

The numbers should be through the roof and almost already assured the biggest December opening ever beating the Hobbit 1.

Whether it has the legs to go after Avatar will depend on the reviews or word of mouth across the globe.

I love having new, good Star Wars movies but this makes me sad.

They will be raping the corpse of this franchise until we all hate it

Avatar was like $3bln, so how can this one not be less than 2?
Avatar topped off at $2.77b

Star Wars is opening to a higher average ticket prices and opening in more theaters which should both give it an advantage, but it will still need decent reviews and word of mouth to break the record IMO.

I'm glad I'm ahead of the curve. Haven't seen the last two and don't plan on seeing another one.

I dig Star Wars and all, but this hype for this one is freaking ridiculous. There've been countdowns for months now in a ton of places. Obviously I'll see it but the true Star Wars nerds are making me want this one to fail just a little. I mean, the last three movies were basically considered garbage even by Star Wars geeks, and Return of the Jedi isn't thought of that well. That leaves two movies out of six that were really good.

WTF does the hype and zeal come from?

I guess I am a nerd but I am excited for this to come out. Going to see it on the 22nd as a birthday present to myself. I am hoping we get the movies the original trilogy deserved. JJ earned my trust with Star Trek. I think he respects the fans feelings about these franchises and tries to preserve as much canon as possible. I am looking forward to a darn fine movie experience.

BTW the ewoks didn't bother me so I was able to enjoy all 3. I get they were a toy tie in, duh. But in a series of movies full of plot holes you could drive a truck through to pick on them as if they were too unbelievable or over the top seems a little silly.

Jar Jar on the other hand was Lucas so far up his own butt he still insists Jar Jar is popular. I would like to see Jar Jar die a horrible death at the hands of his own behavior. Maybe the ending credits scene?

As far as franchises go Disney seems to do a good job. Pixar, marvel, sure there are others. There's a lot of material to tell here, I'm excited to see what they do.

I agree. Every one was afraid they were going to screw both Pixar and Marvel and they have done nothing to harm either franchise.

Star Wars Rebels is a top notch show and if they launch the movies successfully with The Fore Awakens, I don't think we will have much to worry about.

I'm excited to see more and more Star Wars movies. I love the series, just as I loved Marvel and Batman and X men. But and some point it will reach saturation for me. I won't need to see 3 seperate Han Solo movies that have little to do with the story and skewed to fit some directors bias fifty years after the first Star Wars but I know it's inevitable.

Can someone just think of an original idea anymore?

So tired of this throw away thought. There's plenty of original ideas every year. Most people ignore them though and go see something familiar. Because movies are a lot of money to go see and people don't want to waste time on something they may not like.

How many movies is Disney making? Episodes 7-9? Released every 3 years or so?

What about those side movies? Are those going to be made, and if so, when?

Disney has confirmed that they are making at least 6 Star Wars movies within the next 10 years.

7, 8 and 9 and the 3 anthology films.

The first anthology film has been named called Star Wars Rogue 1 and is going to be released in late 2016. Rogue 1 will focus on the people who stole the battle plans of the Death Star.

The second anthology film is expected to be a Han Solo back story film and is slated for release in May of 2018.

Cool! So many back stories....would love to see more Bobba Fett and Jabba. Would be cool to see Darth Vader between Episodes 3 and 4 also.

i think it will definitely be the best reviewed of the newer ones. JJ is a good director and won't put out garbage.

At least 2.5 billion with upside.

both Boba and Darth between 3 and 4 have been talked about, but the wonderful series Star Wars Rebels is taking place between 3 and 4 so I don't know if they will do a movie or not.

Between 5 and 6 the story about how they tracked down Han would be cool. But probably not a film they'd make.

I would say since the last ones kinda sucked, the nerds have been looking for a great Star Wars movie for about 30 years now. I would JJ's track record has boosted the hype to epic proportions. Would not have the excitement level if Lucas was writing and directing this. I think the trailers look awesome (yes, it is their job to do so) and J am jacked to see this.

Also, i am guessing a bit has to do with dudes my age who were kids when these were in the theater now have kids to share the excitement with. My 9 year old has been counting down for about a year now.

This time line is confusing.

At the end of 5, Lando and Chewy fly off ahead of Leia and Luke to rescue Han.

At the beginning of 6, we see the rescue.

And yet according to the time line, a full year had past between 5 and 6 so I don't know what Lando and Chewy did for a year. Did any of the books talk about this period?

========================

and this is just my opinion but I don't want to see new actors play those roles in that time period.

I have no problem seeing a young Han and young Lando in a back story about Han since we did not see them in that time period in any of the movies, but we are very familiar with all the characters between 5 and 6 and I don't think I would like to see new actors in that time period playing the same characters.

Agree, plus even if they put out 1 a year, it will only be about 1/10th the # of superhero movies released in that time. No way they reach Marvel's saturation in the theaters.
