How old is to old to go into locker room with mom? (1 Viewer)

Deranged Hermit

Not cool & Pissed
I saw http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=708577 this thread and it prompted me to post this:

There's a big stink going on at a local swim club that my family is a member of that is kind of similar to that thread. This lady brings her kid into the locker room with her (probably 8 years old or so) and the boy VERY visably watches the women getting changed (I'm almost jealous as there are A LOT of hot moms there) . The mom argues that she teaches him the body isn't something to be ashamed of, doesn't want to leave the kid alone, etc but the other moms are getting pissed. They're saying the kid is making them and their daughters uncomfortable.

I'm of the thought that 8 is probably too old to take the kid in with you. I understand she's a single mom and what not, so she doesn't have a spouse to take him into the mens locker room, but plenty of kids that age get changed by themselves at the pool. There is an attendant in the locker room, so it's very doubtful anything would happen.

Anyway, just seeing what others say about the situation.

Was going to say the same as FC. The Y says 6 and up has to go to their respective locker room. Family ones are available.

8 is most definitely too old. Mom needs to be told that she can either send her son into the male locker room to get changed or have her money refunded to her and go find somewhere else.

OR, if she's so certain that everyone being naked isn't a big deal, she can take him into the men's locker room and BOTH of them can go change in there. Let's see how ok she is with all the men staring at her while she changes.

My YMCA has a limit of 5 for opposite sex... They have a family locker room if you still feel the need over 5.
Yea. Same here.

And of course you would still feel the need. Don't think you want a 5 year old going into a locker room by him/herself to get dressed and stuff

Winner.

It really came to a boiling point last night, so that's probably where this is headed. A mom overheard the boy saying to another kid something about one of the moms in the locker room and she went ballistic.

To be honest, they would have probably asked them to leave already if the woman wasn't a lawyer. They have no choice now though.

If the mom threatens to sue, I'd make a call to child services. If she's going to make everyone else miserable, then she deserves to go through some pain herself for her whacko stance.

BAM!

From someone without kids there is definitely a point where a child shouldn't be in the opposite sex change room yet is too young to be left on their own. Not our problem folks. 5 is too old IMHO. If you don't have a same sex adult to take the kid into the proper change room then don't go to the damn pool.

Shtick aside, does anyone actually think she's right?
Nope.
As a lawyer, you'll prob know the answer:

Can't they just put an age limit on the opposite sex? The YMCA does this, however they do offer an alternative (maybe this is why?)...
This doesn't really fit in my wheelhouse... but I'm not sure it fits into anyone's. I'm not aware of any reason they can't put an age limit on there, and I think the alternative is for the convenience of the parents, not because of a legal reason they have to.

I think the YMCA has this right... I think 5 is near the top of the limit, but a 5 year old boy in a women's locker room still doesn't really understand.

No, she's violating the rights of the other moms there. It's creepy and she should have no case if the legal system has any sense (which admittedly is a dicey proposition).
Having no case doesn't mean she can't still sue and cost the swim club a bunch of money in lawyer fees. I can understand why her being a lawyer has made the club reticent to force the issue, but the other mom's could sue as well and have an actual case IMO.

No. I have my 7 y.o. girl do a walk-thru the ladies locker-room at our neighborhood pool, because it is the exit, without even thinking about it.

I think the kid talking about the other mom's shaved hoo-hah to his friends was the straw that broke the camel's back here. There isn't anyone suing, yet, but there are many threatening to leave.

Also, can't they just revoke her membership? A place of business has the right to refuse service.

If all of the other members are against her, that might be the easiest way out.

At 8 years old that kid already has one hell of a spank bank

Good for him

And yeah 8 is way too old. Hes definitely popping wood while hes in there and the women are understandably uncomfortable

I agree with the dude who said he's jealous of this kid.

Hell no. Way too old. My daughter is 7 and is more than capable of changing or using the bathroom all by herself. I'd say 6 is the limit. I'm glad that day finally came.

An 8-year-old is typically in 3rd grade, maybe 2nd? Just thinking back to when I was a kid, this would've been my wildest dream. I wasn't masturbating at that age, but I definitely knew what boobs were and thought they were just great.

This lady is bonkers.

Even at 30 I dont have dreams this wild

Man people coddle their kids these days. When I was 8 we used to play in broken glass and ride bikes across parkways with no supervision.

This kids mother wont even let him change his underwear by himself
