How to separate from the pack (1 Viewer)

I have a 12 team PPR we start 1 qb 1 rb 1 wr 1 te 1 k 1def/st and 3 flex rb/wr. All Td are 6 pt all td over 40 yds 9 pts with 5 point bonuses at milestones 100 yds rush 300 yd pass etc.. typical 1pt for 10 yds rush or rec 1pt per 25 yd passing

My question is in this kind of set up is there really any kind of way to separate from the pack? What makes things even harder is our draft order is random every other rd. So that brings a lot of luck into play just based off draft position. 6 teams make playoffs 3 division winners 3 wild cards. Im thinking the omly way to differentiate is to take TE in 1st rd. Not asking who to draft just trying to get opinions

Is my league to bound by luck factor to really differentiate myself? I thought maybe stockpile RB but that doesnt make a diffence only have to start 1 could stockpile WR but theres so many Wr to go around that wouldnt make a differnce. I think as commisioner best way is to change lineup requirements but if i do that first complaint will be im making changes that benefit me!

What to do?

I'd say that the league rules don't really matter, with the possible exception of the randoming of the draft order every other round.

No matter what the set up is, getting the best value and having more info than your competition is the best way to "separate from the pack".

That said, out of the options you gave I'd say stocking up on RBs is your best bet. In PPR with that setup there will be tons of WRs going early, so conventional wisdom will tell you to do the opposite and go RB. Plus, RBs that catch the ball are undervalued in PPR IMO.

Yea I hear you jus feel like I got too much luck involved with my league. I've thrown out to the league about going to starting 2rb 2 wr 1 flex but no one is going for it.

If everyone is the same skill level it's gonna be hard to get an edge. But if it isn't equal you have to maximize you're edge and reduce risks.

The randomizing of the draft order is the only thing that makes your league more about luck, imo. That's what I would try and change if it was my league. Seems like fun and all, unless you're the unlucky one who gets the 10th pick 3 times in a row.

I would change the league rules. To me they really suck. I was once in a league where we had a random order each round and it was terrible. That league disbanded after that season.

Well this is our 17th yr I think the biggest thing is the draft order and the 3 flex. I think by only starting. 3 Rb we have really devalued the Rb position. I've recently started tinkering with idea of a pt per carry or a point every 2 carries maybe to even out the value between Rb and Wr. The obvious way would be to get rid of PPR.

The way our draft order is setup you kind of at the mercy of ya draft position. So you draft 1st rd then snake back then it's randl for 3rd and snake back then 5th and so on. One thing that helps I set draft order month before draft. Maybe we go to straight serpentine draft. I kno some will say Auction but no one wants to do auction

Auction is by far the best way to do it but it's the hardest to get others to agree on. The next best option is just a standard snake. Why you would do it any other way is beyond me.

As for the roster, this is my favorite: QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, RB/WR/TE, K, DEF

From a league stand point;

-Deep rosters

-Dynasty

From a single owner stand point;

-Make your own draft list. This alone can create an advantage if you know they are using expert lists.

-Sit on long shots. Josh Robinson in Indy for example. Basically, jump the waiver wire.

From a scoring/roster stand point;

- Use MFL10 rosters and scoring. Not best ball though.

Honestly, deep roster dynasty is your best bet.
