How Will Your League Handle An 18 Game NFL Schedule? (1 Viewer)

I am in a 14 team keeper/dynasty league. We play each team once and start the playoffs in week 14. Perfect. When the league goes to an 18 game (19 week) schedule, something will have to change. I'm all for expanding to 16 teams, but not sure the league will go for it. What will your league do?

league size and schedule same as yours

we will do the same as always

1-13 season

14,15,16 playoffs

we won't play week 17 or 18

seems lately teams have been resting starters in week 16 AND 17 anyways

Hmm...

Current 17 Week NFL Season:

12 teams, one division, top 8 teams make the playoffs

- 13 week regular season (1-13)

- 3 weeks playoffs (14/15/16)

- Week 17 = nothing

- Teams are grouped (in threes) by final standings (including playoffs) from previous season.

- 11 Regular Season games against each opponent in the league

- 2 RS games vs two teams in your group. For instance, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd place teams play each other one extra time each. The 4th, 5th, 6th against each other; 7/8/9, and 10/11/12

18 Week NFL Season:

12 teams, one division, top 8 teams make the playoffs

- 14 week regular season (1-14)

- 3 weeks playoffs (15/16/17)

- Week 18 = nothing

- Teams are grouped (in fours) by final standings (including playoffs) from previous season.

- 11 Regular Season games against each opponent in the league

- 3 RS games vs three teams in your group. For instance, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th place teams play each other one extra time each. The 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th against each other and 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th against each other.

If it is a keeper league, then go by order of finish from previous year to see who you play twice. For example number 1 division year ago, plays number 1 from other division, etc. This is just one way to add your extra game.

There will be 19 weeks, no?

When is this supposed to start?
Nothing is concrete yet. They're just talking about it.The players won't want to do it. 16 games is brutal enough.
The only reason I can think of the NFL wants it is mo money. Can't see any other bennifit. But again, if the league makes more, the players should make more, and the fans would have more to enjoy. It is a win/win if you look at it that way I guess.

Of course it's all about money. You know how much money 1 week of football is worth in TV revenues?Just advertisements alone is ridiculous. The players don't want it because they simply start to break down physically. Don't get me wrong, more football = Happier BLS, but if they went to 18 games, I agree with the above poster that they'd have to go to 2 bye weeks to give players more breaks.

I agree, but expanding to a 20 week season has some issues. This season we'd have regular season games through January 18. That means the SB wouldn't be until the last Sunday in February. I guess that would be OK. But if you think playing in Green Bay, or Buffalo, or Chicago, or Cleveland, or Pittsburgh, etc. is no fun in December, try it in late January.

:lmao: Several confused folks in here. IN every discussion about expanding the regular season, they've discussed cutting pre-season games. The regular season would start sooner, not end later.

I could see cutting one game fom the pre-season, but more then that would seriously hamper the ability of the coaches to evaluate young talent. This is particluarly difficult right now as pre-seaosn roster limits are making things harder then they need to be.

i think i have read that however many regular season games they add is how many preseason games they take awaystill the players union may balk because the main guys will actually have to PLAY in those 2 extra games unlike the preseason where they just dress out and may play a series or 2

I honestly haven't slept much the past week since reading about this possibility. I just keep reworking all the possible schedule changes in my head. Our league has met twice already to discuss what direction to go in.

8 teams out of 12 make the playoffs? Why even have a regular season. Seems like 6 playoff teams would be fairer if not 4.

Just because they cut preseason games doesn't mean they would automatically start the season earlier. I'm not sure they would want to start regular season games before Labor Day.

 Is there some magical significance to labor day?

I just think that there's too much competition for people's time during the summer. Vacations, ballgames, picnics, reunions, etc. The ratings are going to be better if you extend the season into the winter as opposed to extending it into the summer. If the purpose is to make more money, I don't think it makes sense to start earlier.

I'm not sure if it's magical, but Labor Day certainly signifies the end of summer and a return to "regular" life, IMO. It's also the last time people have vacations in most cases. I would think that NFL games held that weekend or before would make less money and have less viewership than a normal mid-season game.

Until recently (within the last 15 years or so), the NFL did open on Labor Day weekend. I imagine they stopped for the reasons given above and also it seems to me they threw college FB a bone to have a weekend all to themselves too (though I may be dreaming that last part). It's hard to say where the NFL would add the two extra games - maybe go back to Labor Day weekend & then one week into January? As for FF, there's all kinds of options if weeks were added: ignore them & keep things the same, have a couple of total points weeks (no H2H) for $$, add a couple of random H2H matchups, expand playoffs, play double-headers, etc....I know alot of us want things perfectly symetrical (my league is right now too) but I think it offers a chance to do some creative things.

What did your league decide? ;)

Exactly. I'm looking for ideas. Thanks for posting Uruk-Hai.
