How would you handle this? (1 Viewer)

First thing I'd do is go on the internet and ask a bunch of strangers who have no knowledge of his skills, market demand and past history what they think.
I'd ask if you were new here, but 5300 posts in I'd think you'd have some rudimentary understanding of how FFA works.

Tell him its ok and you hope he feels better but you want some thoughts on the 25 year old.

Tell him he showed up all dishoveled and he he told you he was out drinking til 4am.

Tell him you find that unacceptable and are thinking of firing him.

25 y.o. - no issue, he dragged his ### in.

F'n NG - call him out, sit down, move forward. No need to put a bullet in his head. This time. But in no uncertain terms, let him know there's one in the chamber. It'd be pretty stupid of him to keep playing Russian roulette with his career.

Not sure what is more disturbing, the AWOL or the lying. Both are unacceptable and you're gonna let him know that.
:goodposting:
This is exactly what i would do. If he was good enough to get the job there is a reason you hired him. Terrible choice, but i would not fire him. That being said, i am about the same age and cannot imagine staying out until 4:00 am. I go out while traveling all the time but generally home between 12-2 and i would never miss an important meeting. Very poor choice.

he'd be dead to me.....

he knows you know cause he has talked with the 25 year old by now......he is actually waiting to see what you will do......he thinks his #### doesn't stink and that he can get away with this.....I'd boot him......he doesn't take you seriously.....and it would send a pretty good message to the 25 year old.....he's 40, he is not a kid anymore....if you only "give him a stern talking too".....he will still think he can piss all over you.....he should be expecting to get fired.....if he treats his boss like this, not sure I'd want to work with him.....grow a pair and dump him.....

25 yr old, a quick conversation about making good business decisions in the future that can help his career and not sink it. Very much a coaching session to help him think through the next time.

The 40 yr old, a not so quick conversation that outlines how he failed and how unacceptable that that was. Making very clear that it will not happen again or there will be severe consequences involved. I like to take the angle of "I have to apologize to you. You see, I obviously failed you in not making sure that this kind of behavior would not be acceptable." as a style approach for a first time major offense.

Blake: You call yourself a salesman, you son of a #####?

Dave: I don't gotta listen to this ####.

Blake: You certainly don't, pal. 'Cause the good news is you're fired

Shelley: The leads are weak.

Blake: The leads are weak. ####in' leads are weak? You're weak. I've been in this business 15 years.

Dave: What's your name?

Blake: #### YOU, that's my name!! You know why, mister? 'Cause you drove a Hyundai to get here tonight, I drove an $80,000 BMW.

Touch base with him and tell him that dog won't hunt. At the end of the day that it looks bad towards his core competency. You drank his Kool Aid and expect him to stay in his swim lane. You know he can move the needle, make hay, and keep his ducks in a row but it is what it is. You're not going to boil the ocean and make him drink from the fire hose. This isn't his first rodeo. But if he screws the pooch again you're going to have to put on your big-boy pants and rightsize the company by making him redundant.

If I were you, Judge, I'd think long and hard about what this episode says about your employees' decision making. Who the hell stays at a strip club until 4:00 AM? Do you know how much wasted money that is only to see the same handful of skeezers recycled through several times. Go to the strip club, see some beave, and get out in a reasonable time. That way you can either get out there and hunt for some conquerable beave while you're still hot and bothered or you can get back to the hotel room, rub one out, and call it a night. Judge, you need to talk with your guys about proper strip club outings.
He's 40 and single. He should've gone to the rub and tug.
That's what I'm thinking.

Seriously, good feedback guys. He left me a vm earlier today, said he just got back from the doctor, wanted to catch up. For the record, he did sound like ####. I'll give him a shot, but have one eye open.

This can be pretty easy to pull off. Just sayin.

Guy was at a strip club until 4AM. Not sure if "easy to pull off" is in his vocabulary.

I like this idea. Give him an opportunity to throw the 25-year-old under the bus.

JFC this is the worst haiku I've ever seen.

As a former VP of sales of mine used to say:

"If you want to fly with the eagles make sure you are up to peck #### with the chickens."

If I missed a high profile sales event, and followed it up by lying - I'd expect to be canned. I'd likely be canned for just missing the meeting as a no call no show. The lying.. this is sales, if you don't have trust you can't work together. What if this meeting was with a customer, what if you weren't there to cover?

My sales manager is my most important customer, you should be his.

Call the 25 year old and the 40 year old into a confence room. You already in there sitting in chair with the back towards the door. When you hear them sit down spin around revealing a pool stick in your hand. Break it in half over your knee and lay one piece on the table. Tell them there is only room for one person on the team. Report back the outcome.

So I hire a guy to a pretty coveted sales position at my company. 40, single guy, pretty successful background, right make up.

4 months in we have a pretty important 3 days sales training event before a big conference. I take my sales team out to an early dinner on last night (1/2 day session next day). We get back to hotel around 9. 8am start time the next day. He sits down and has a beer with 25 year old inside sales guy. I go up as have early calls the next morning and have a presentation to practice.

My sales guys is a no show to leave to office in the am. Doesn't return calls or texts. We start our training, which includes President of US operations sitting next to me. I asked the 25 year old guy who's in front of me and looking pretty wrecked what time they left the bar. Said they went out. I asked what time they got back and he sheepishly holds up 4 fingers. I then get a text from my sales guy saying he felt like he had the flu after dinner and is sick. I asked the junior guy where they went that served so late. Turns out they went to a strip club.

OK, I could have written books on strip club travels back in the day, so no judgment there. But the lack of business judgment is mind blowing to me. Don't stay out until 4am when you are on important business. And if you do, suck it up, maintain, and find a way to get through it. But a no show? Man, even if you overslept or needed to sober up at least find a way to make it in. Then the lie. The other guy reports to me too but actually I give him a pass. 25 years old, first time on the circuit maybe, probably never felt the pain of being hung over and miserable at a conference/event. But he told me the truth. So while I question his judgment I at least trust him.

The other guy? Well, I went to bat for him big time. He's got a mid 6 figure base and an opp for big $$. And he risks it with stupid decisions made worse with lies? No communication after the text at 9am.

How would you handle? And what would you think of the guy going forward?
This guy is making mid 6-figures (~500k)? At that price point, you show up when you're supposed to show up.
Just base if I'm reading that right... I'd also assume at that level his pay has to be in the 70/30 or at worst 60/40 range, so could be opportunity around $800k?
For some reason I read this as around $150k rather than $500k.....either way with the lying this guy should be on his way out the door.

Good god I hate business speak.

Also to echo what others above have said while I wouldn't fire the guy that is some incredibly terrible decision-making. Huge no-no especially when the boss heads up to his room at 9 pm b/c to rest for actual work. Maybe this guy hasn't partied in awhile and it caught up to him much harder than he anticipated (optimistic view here) but at that pay he should be on top of his game at all times.

Jesus Christ Ellis tell these people you don't KNOW me!

I would fire his ###, for chicken #### lying to his direct report. His bad decision reflects directly on you. If you think this is the last/only time he throws you under the bus, you are sorely mistaken. He is being paid as a professional. Truth is, he is no professional. Cut your losses, fire this loser.

I'm a hard liner, but I believe if you pay people well, you have to expect to be treated accordingly.

There are 2 things adults do. Show up and own up. He did neither.

I'm sure most of us have let a night get away from us. I've shown up in court a few times "feeling sick." But it never crossed my mind not to go.

The guy is a high end salesman - he either makes his nut, or he does not. At that level, you can put up with a lot of #### if he is hitting his numbers.

If this was a low-level guy, sure, he is probably not worth the hassle, but if he can justify the mid-six figure base, and he is not ####### your wife, he gets a little leeway.

Right. I guess that's what makes this even worse. And it probably isn't correct to hold this guy to a higher standard simply b/c he makes more money than 99.9% of people, but I just can't get over messing around with a job like that.

Come on what a bunch of pushovers!! - he no showed for an out of town important meeting. There is no way he keeps his job.... set the tone Judge. You let this guy get away with this you will lose control over everyone else.

Of course you can hold a high salary person to a higher level. The pay grade goes up,the expectations go up with it.

This really hurts the synergy with your team and makes it hard to create a win-win situation. I'm thinking you need to have a come to Jesus talk with him about strategically taking one for the team.

Well if you do fire him keep me in mind. Of course I have zero sales experience. But I know enough to not hang out at strip clubs until 4AM the day of an important meeting.

Aside from this instance, has this guy performed up to expectations? I ran this as a hypo by some of my wife's family who own sales businesses and the consensus was simply if this guy is so far making you enough money that you're otherwise satisfied with him you simply tell him not to do this again and ignore it.

:hifive:

Well, what I'm not doing is buying is sickness story. Just too much of a coincidence. And no matter what, you set your alarm, wake up, and if you feel like #### you call, text or email your boss saying you can't make it in. He didn't answer 2 phone calls/texts, and only sent a text well after the meeting started.

I have his annual review tomorrow (we are on a April 1 FY). I'm going to let him know that I have serious questions about his business judgment and my ability to trust him now, the next time there will be no next time, and I expect him to walk the talk and deliver.

They say nothing good happens after midnight but greatness happens between 2 & 4.

I'd wait until this doucher tries to submit the expenses and then give him a wedgie.

Edit - just saw his review with you is tomorrow. What a dumass and wuss. We've all been in that situation more or less and you gotta be better/know better.
