The A-11 Offense (All Eleven Players Potentially Eligible) is an innovative new offense that blends aspects of almost every type of offense in the history of football such as the West Coast, Spread Option, Run and Shoot, Shotgun Zone Fly, Wing-T, Single Wing, Notre Dame Box, Triple Option and Veer just to name a few. Teams can use the A-11 as a “package” to supplement their own offense & feature up to eleven players as potential threats, and even two quarterbacks in the shotgun!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOW IT WORKS:

The A-11 features up to all eleven players wearing an eligible receiver jersey number, either 1-49 or 80- 99, with two quarterbacks in the shotgun formation at 7 yards, and with nobody under center - thereby meeting the criteria for a scrimmage kick formation. In “base” sets, the A-11 Offense has a center, and a tight end on each side, and three wide receivers to the right, and left respectively. By spreading the potentially eligible receivers across the entire field, it forces the defense to account for every possible receiver on each play. Of course, on any given play, only six of those players can go downfield to catch a pass, and the five “covered” players remain ineligible to catch a downfield pass on that particular play.

would that work in the NFL? thoughts?

No. It is an offense that is able to happen only through a loop hole in the H.S. rules. I hope it is never allowed in football again. It is not innovative, it is just a way to take advantage of the rules that are in place. Hopefully they will fix these rules soon to stop this silly offense.

HS just banned it except on 4th down. College it can be done only on 4th down.

NFL does not allow eligible numbers to be ineligible receivers. Only the other way if reported before the play to the Referee(who informs the defense)

Jeff Fischer was working on a format of it according to SI. You cannot go full blown..... but I thought he said OT's are eligible to catch a ball if they report to the ref and then sit out the next play. What you could do is carry two extra OT's, bring them in in the formation, either run a play and have them sit or just call a TO.

It's already been banned in some states and will probably continue to receive backlash in areas that don't close the loophole.

I hope they get rid of it soon...between the "A-11 O" and crystal meth, this country is headed for the crapper.

Some context here: Piedmont is a small town which is completely surrounded by Oakland. Piedmont's population is 11K, and the median household income is $134K. Oakland has a population of 400K; the median household income is $40K.

In a town like Piedmont, you don't have a high level of participation in sports like football. Most likely, they were tired of getting the snot beaten out of them by better teams not populated with rich kids, so they came up with this gimmick to let them use as many of their average size, average weight kids as they could at the same time.

The offense is still 100% legal as long as there are 4 linemen who wear ineligible uniform numbers (and then declare as eligible receivers).......right?

No. The point of the A-11 is that you have a center and then 10 players on the field who you cannot identify if they are eligible. This can be done in HS because some places have rules that punt formations are not bound by the normal rules for eligible and ineligible players. In the NFL, you must either wear a number that correctly identifies your eligible/ineligible status, or you must report to the ref so he can inform the defense prior to the play. It defeats the element of surprise if you are not allowed to snap the ball until the ref points out for the defense which of your players are the ineligible ones and thus don't need to be covered in a passing play. The NFL doesn't have the loophole of waving those rules, just because you used a punt formation, that some high school rules have.ETA: To answer your question specifically, no, if you have 4 ineligible players who report eligible, then you have too many eligible players and would receive a penalty. If those 4 report as eligible than 4 other players would have to report as ineligible (or be wearing ineligible numbers).

In the Rams first or second season in St. Louis Rich Brooks ran a nutty 2 point conversion play. There was a center and a QB lined up directly under center. The other 9 players were about 20 feet to their left. The QB hiked the ball and all hell broke loose. Incomplete pass. Not at all sure what was supposed to happen. Some guys went into the endzone. Some guys just stood there. I'm guessing they were supposed to block but with no one but a single center between them and the QB they just ran to their left unabated to the QB once the ball was snapped. At least those that didn't stand around scratching their heads as to what was going on....

That may have indeed been what they were trying to do. Wound up looking somewhat like a Junior High Square dance with a pinatta.
