I am so done with instant replay (1 Viewer)

The replay aspect has REALLY dulled the NFL game. The coaches are using their reviews for 4 yard, second down plays. The officials are checking plays withing 2 minutes at least 3 times a game. If that's not bad enough the calls that come from the reviews leave me and every analyst dumbfounded at times. I wish we could go back to the way things were when I was a kid.

Could not agree more. I hate replay...and college replay is even worse...it slows the game...and disregards the fact the game is played and called on a field not television.

The essence of sports is played out on the field!!!!!! Human error is inevitable and part of the game.

Wow. I love the current system. Vastly superior to the college version. Just the right balance of being thorough and getting it right / not killing flow of the game.

Totally agree. It also allows guys to be completely reckless with the ball near the goalline or sidelines because they've got the replay to fall back on.

I'm with you on this one. The way the NFL does replay drives me nuts.

Get an official in the booth and anytime there is a challenge he looks and calls it back down to the head ref. From red flag to decision it should be under 1 minute.

I like the replays, but I think they should be sped up. If you can't get enough info to overturn or confirm a call in 120 seconds, it's inconclusive. Move on.

 Love the system too, but I do think the refs are leaning on it a bit too heavily. Too many challenges are being used on plays called fumbles where it seems the ref is simply giving the BOD to the defense. If it's close...let the "fumble" get recovered, but the ref could still call it down by contact (WITHOUT stopping the play) and let the defense challenge to recieve the fumble instead of the offense challenging to reverse one obvious non-fumble after a nother.

At least 3 reviews a game when under 2 minutes? Hadn't realized it was that often.
Hint: It's not.
I was being dramatic although I have seen a couple games where it was close. It just seems the refs are going to the review for everything within the two. It wouldn't be so bad if it was to review TD's or fumbles but they are reviewing the spots on the field and even reviewing how much time should be on the clock. The clock thing had me laughing because there is one guy whos only job is to monitor the clock. I like the way it was even a couple years ago.

 I always hated seeing bad calls stand back before the replays. We have the tech, why not use it? Commercial breaks detract more from the games than replays, IMO, but we're stuck with them if we want low-cost access to the TV broadcasts.

if we do away with instant reply, you'll have more fans calling for referees' heads if they make bad calls. Remember Don Denkinger in the 1995 World Series?

I don't care for Instant Replay but the one thing that REALLY bothers me is them changing the rules in the last 2:00 of a half. Give the coaches an extra challenge if you need to but don't switch to the booth at 2:00. It makes no sense.

the thing about the challenges in the last two minutes also is that it is very inconsistent.....if the play ends inbounds and the clock is running, they won't stop it for review, because that would benefit the team with no timeouts.....the only time they will review is on a play where the clock stops.....those plays where the clock is running could be just as important, yet won't be reviewed....to me if you are going to make it part of the game, then make it part of the whole game.....just because it is last two minutes it shouldn't change anything....if coaches are able to manipulate it a little to their advantage by stopping the clock, etc...then so be it......make it so they get a 10 second run off or something if they are wrong.......

I also think that if a coach uses a challenge and he is proven right, he should get to keep it.....none of this have to get the first two right to get a 3rd bs.....

This is the way it should be done. Why can't the ref in the booth make the call? I don't get why the ref on the field has to go over and watch it. All of us at home know what the call should be 5 minutes before they make the damn call...its ridiculous.

While we're at it. Why not bring the games archaic ways of measuring 1st downs with chains into todays technology. Heck we can seen the first down yellow line on our TV's. Why not take it a step further like tennis checking the ball hitting the line by computer replay. This part of the game of bringing chains out does still bring me back to the old days, like watching the games with my dad before the days of remote control and hi karate aftershave commercials. You kids out there probably wouldn't understand.

guys on the field may actually want to know the distance.

I don't mind it. I'd rather they have a better chance to get it right.

Like most, I think they should be able to do it much quicker. I've always just assumed that they are in no hurry because they want to squeeze in an extra commerical or 2.

Watching a single NFL game can be downright excruciating, but it has very little to do with replays.

I love the current system and I don't understand the "it slows down the game and makes things boring" argument. Sure sometimes there are reviews where its remarkably obvious right away which side will win. However, a lot of times, a review is one of the most talked about and exciting parts of a game, as everyone you're watching with has their own opinion on the play and debates will ensue.

I agree with the bolded 100000000000000%Heck add a few more zeroes to how much I agree with that.

Current system is fine.

One of the reasons it takes so long is that they have to look at more than just the play. They have to check the spot, which could be tough to discern from just one angle, and the clock, and sometimes consult a rulebook to be sure they've got it right. All in all, it's really not that long a delay.

I've been saying this for years. The official eyes up where he thinks the ball landed, then the chain gang trudges halfway across the field, hopefully walking a straight line, then tries to line the chain up perpendicularly and stretch it to its fullest extent. Honestly, how much error is introduced on every measurement?

The chain gang doesn't have to run a straight line. One guy in the middle holds a link in the middle that's on the five-yard line that goes across the whole field. He puts the link on the line by the ball, then they stretch from there. It's accurate to within the width of the guy's finger.

The main problem with instant replay right now is that even with a blown up image slowed down to 1/10th of real-time speed, the human error is still erroneously high.

It's ridiculous that 10 million people can be watching something on TV, all CLEARLY see something, and have the ref still inexplicably call it the other way after looking at the replay himself.
