I experienced the Drafting with Guppies in person (1 Viewer)

My older league has some guys that no what they are doing. It's patterns follow more of what FBG would prescribe. I was invited to join a new league and was told that it had some newbies (i.e. guppies).

With a new group I'd never seen before and a scoring system I was largely unfamiliar with (non-standard), I sort of went in unaware. I did OK, but man, the normal run on RBs in 1-2 didn't occur like I normally see. After about 30 picks there must have been 6 QBs, 12 RBs and 10 WRs taken, along with Gates.

Like the Drafting with Guppies article accurately discusses, you better be ready to get QBs early, don't load up on RB early, b/c you'll find good ones late (see what I did below). Defenses went fast and relatively early (people even picked two), value based drafting was a rarity, and homer picks were common.

10 team, non-ppr league.....here's what I got (partial list)

1.02 Sjax

2.09 Steve Smith

3.02 Travis Henry (really surprised he was there)

4.09 Carson Palmer (believe it or not, he was about the 7th QB taken...had to get him while was there)

5.02 Donald Driver

6.09 Ahman Green

7.02 Santana Moss

8.09 Duece McAllister (shocked he was still there)

9.02 Ben Roethlisberger (people started taking QB2s in late 8th rd)

10.09 Santonio Holmes

14.09 Tatum Bell (believe it or not.....not bad for this round)

later: Vikings D (all the good ones were gone by 11),

This team should hold it's own, but it was a different experience.

<insert snide comment about age/mental capabilities of your league-mates>

Why even play out the season? Go get your trophy printed today. And with the $$$ you win buy your league-mates FBG subscriptions so at least next year you won't be so bored.

I guess the other possibility is that the other 9 league members are in fact YOU, because you have a split personality disorder?

CONGRATS CRAZY MAN

Neighbor asked me to join. A couple of ladies in the group that don't know a lot. My neighbor is a FBG subscriber and after he rolled the league last year and won the $$ I figured I could do the same:) His lineup last year was ridiculous. To the other owner's credit, they did learn some about his strategy last year and the drafting was not quite as easy as I thought, but you can see the value that was laying around late.

My buddy needed a guy for a league at work. He's done it for a few years but isn't all that savvy and several of the people at work are completely new. But I'll do it for fun and to give us something to talk about. I read the Guppies article and got ready for it figuring to take advantage a little. But they all got the time zone wrong so me and my buddy were the only llive drafters. Autodraft gave some of the teams really darn good teams. It'll make it much more competitive but totally not what I expected or prepped for. Plus I would draft 2 players, then wait 3 minutes and draft 2 players. It went so quick because 8 of 10 picks were instant.

You have a great team and I hope you win the league.

That being said, I don't understand the appeal of playing in a league like this. If you win...you played with novices. If you don't...you embarrass yourself by losing to novices. They're not even friends of yours. Is the pot really that enticing?

It doesn't make any sense to me, but your team looks great, so good job drafting. Enjoy.

In the wild Sharks perform a very important duty associated with Natural Selection. They kill and eat the week and injured; insuring that the strong are left to breed strong offspring. In fantasy football Sharks also perform the same task. I’d like to change the term “guppy” here into “Frye”. Frye are baby guppies (new FF players). It is your job to run rough shot over this league and utterly destroy your competition. In the process you will chase off future “guppies”, and help speed up the maturation process of future “sharks”. It’s natural selection. You would be doing a great service to your fellow “shark” by so humiliating future “guppies” so bad that they won’t want to play anymore. The people who stick around will learn from the beating you give them and someday mature into great competition (i.e. sharks). Destroy these “frye” and be happy knowing that you are performing a charitable task for your fellow Sharks. Today’s frye are tomorrow’s playoff contenders.

Not really. The money I'd "make" isn't worth the time I'd have to spend dealing with another league. FF isn't as much fun for me if I'm playing in a ton of leagues and ended up drafting everybody at some point. I understand that others don't feel the same way, but I don't see the appeal of playing with inexperienced strangers. Like I said, hope he wins it all. He has a good roster.

Well, I'm not really a shark, anyway. It just doesn't sound like much reward to me and I don't care enough about strangers to teach them anything, but I realize I might be in the minority. You've given me a rationale as to why people might want to play, though. Thanks.

Why not play in the league?Perhaps it will pay for one or two of his other leagues?

I was really just trying to be funny. It kinda sounded funny in a stupid kinda way when I typed it. But then again I'm kinda stupid in a funny kinda way. Oh Welllll.

Actually, if this was a post mocking certain people...it was pretty damn good. Fooled a lot of us.I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Experienced the same thing in a $50 redraft league this past Thursday. Small league.....8 owners. Vanilla scoring format that greatly favors QB's & RB's and puts little value on WR's. 1 point per 5 yards rushing. 1 point per 10 yards passing. 1 point per 10 yards receiving. NO PPR. Start: QB,RB,RB,WR,WR,WR,TE,K,DEF/ST. 15 rounds. I have played in the league the last 2 years and won it both years (not saying much). I discovered my 1st year in this league that the run was at QB early so I planned to grab a top one (Manning if possible & load up on RB's to trade to the teams that only draft 2 RB's - which shouldn't happen....but it does in this league).

I drafted out of the 3 spot.

1. S.Jax

2. P.Manning

3. T.Henry

4. Portis

5. T.O.

6. Gates

7. Andre Johnson

8. Cadillac Williams

9. D.Driver

10. Burress

11. M.Lynch

12. H.Ward

13. B.Jackson

14. Philly D

15. Gostkowski

Start: P.Manning, S.Jax, Henry, T.O., Andre Johnson, Driver, Gates, Philly, Gostkowski.

What I don't like about guppy leagues is what happens with trades. You can have a great draft and think you're set. Then someone enters into some lopsided trades and winds up with an All-Star trade (that does not get overturned or vetoed). These lopsided trades are less likley to happen in a Shark league. The lopsided trades really skew the competitiveness of the league throughout the season.

Quick suggestion:Can we please stop capitalizing "shark"?This annoys the living hell out of me. TIA.

I wish that my problems were such that a capital "S" had high enough priority compared to the crap that happens in this world to annoy me.
