I give up on NFL fines (1 Viewer)

Seriously I give up trying to figure out what is finable and what isn't. I think it is pretty bad when players, officials and the league can't even get on the same path about what is deserving of a fine or an illegal hit.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/09/20/demeco-ryans-fined-21000-for-hit-that-injured-malcom-floyd/

Chargers wide receiver Malcom Floyd had to be immobilized on a backboard, carted off the field and taken to the hospital after going down on a hit from Eagles linebacker DeMeco Ryans in San Diego’s Week Two victory.

Floyd will miss at least this week’s game while he recovers from a neck injury and Ryans will miss some money from his bank account after being fined. The NFL has confirmed that Ryans was fined $21,000 for striking a defenseless receiver in the head and neck with his shoulder.

The hit was less clear cut than many that result in fines. Floyd was being tackled from behind as he tried to reel in the throw from Philip Rivers and either lowered his head or had it forced down by the other defender before making contact with Ryans’ shoulder. There didn’t appear to be much that Ryans could do to avoid the hit and there didn’t appear to be any intent to land a blow to Floyd’s head on the play.

As Mike Florio reported earlier this week, though, the league felt Floyd was in a defenseless posture and that a flag would have been warranted on the play. None was thrown, but Ryans wasn’t able to avoid a fine.

Slow mo replay at the end. I am guessing the NFL expect defenders to what? Just lay down on the field soon as they see a WR put their head down? Stand there an let the WR spear you in the chest? Just tired of this ####. Any person with a brain knows when there is intent, that is what the fines were for in the first place ( think brandon meriweather on heap or dunta robinson on maclin )...not this bull####.

who cares? unless you are an nfl player who got fined, this doesn't impact you in any way.

I couldn't care less who and how much these guys get fined. They make enough money and can afford it. It's the penalties associated with the hits in question that bother me.

Well the problem is if even if there was no penalty and in this case there wasn't ( should not have been one either ) it puts him one notch closer to a possible suspension down the road. He should appeal this and win the appeal. He didn't break anything in the player conduct rule book.

Wonder if Floyd would have been fined if his helmet caught Ryans in the chest? Since that is a rule now ya know & Floyd did have his head down, it would have speared Ryans.

It's pretty simple. Former NFL players sued the NFL for billions. Current NFL players are paying the tab.
NFL fines are donated to charity, not put into their coffers.
We have verification of this how? Because they say so? bunch of hooyha if you ask me.
35 seconds of googling would do you a lot of good here.

And the case was settled for less than $1B, which, while a lot of money, is a drop in the bucket for the multi-billion dollar NFL overall.

The inconsistency of both the flags and the fines is annoying. While I REALLY dislike players "tackling" WRs by launching their helmet into the WR's helmet, I do agree that, that is a far cry from incidental shoulder-to-helmet contact resulting from the WR lowering his head.

On a related note: What ever happened to actual wrap-up tackling???

what charity?
Many, they have to register here https://www.nflcharities.org/
that link was posted in response to the same question before. That doesn't answer the question as to what charities receive donations.

Aside from confirming that some of the fine money goes to retired player funds, the 3-year-old USA Today article specifically cites 1 charitable donation. When the NFL gave $500k to the Red Cross once. According to that article, that's a little less than 2-weeks worth of fines. It's a pretty legitimate question to ask which charities the NFL donates its money to.

This has some info. I suppose you could be right, they could be committing tax fraud.

750 mill is less than 0.5% of the NFL's annual revenue and they are paying it out over 20 years. It is the equivalent of a person that makes 50k a year, paying $10 a month for Sirius radio. It is no impact on the NFL's bottom line. They don't need to increase fines to pay for this.

I read a great idea by someone the other day about doing a side bet of sorts inside an existing fantasy league were everyone got to select a player with the idea being to select the most fined player in the league. Seemed like a decent idea to make all this fine stuff worth following.
