The shark move is to schedule your two week rest period during this time. Looks like we've got a bunch of gym wannabe's here. If you knew it was going to happen why are you even there? Like someone already said these clowns keep the membership fees down and are at the very least entertaining to watch.

sheesh

I joined a small backup local gym for 10 bucks a month for this very reason. I go early on the weekends and try and stay away from my regular gym during the weekdays to avoid the afterwork resolution people. Todays going to be hells bells i'm sure of it, the gym is right in the middle of midtown Manhattan so it'll be at least 20 minutes waiting for a locker.
Where in Manhattan do you get $10/mo for a gym? I was paying $160 @ Equinox. Effing ripoff.edit: I take it your 'small, local' gym is outside of Manhattan. Sorry for the misread.
Out in Long Island, I think the only spot you can get it for that cheap is at a crappy Parks Dept. gym or something.
I pay $5/month + $25 annual fee for my gym. It's awesome. No pool, aerobics classes, or other stuff I never use. Just weights and treadmills.

no water either. i was all set to join one of these in the fall and go on the way to work ... then i walked in and was told no showers. now, not like i want to shower in a gym but impossible to go to the office after working out (and i work nights, so that option was out) after sweating for a half hour.i am looking at joining

however

i have driven by after work and there is NO ONE there.

Wait, so you get paid (by our tax dollars, no less) to work out, but you're complaining that you're inconvenienced for a few weeks in January by the resolution crowd? Sorry, but I'm not sure I can work up a lot of sympathy for you on that one.
You do realize civilian employees also deploy right? That's why the policy is in place. But I'm sure if you worked somewhere that offered such a policy, you wouldn't use it out of principle right?
Of course I would use it. I just wouldn't moan and complain that other people had decided to use their hard earned money to join and attempt to get healthier, regardless of the time of year.

I guess you missed the point where it's on base and therefore there is no fee, it's free. Odds are pretty good that if there was a fee, 90% of these folks wouldn't have stepped foot inside. And sorry, but no, when I walk in to the gym and have to turn around and walk out because there's no machines avaialble for use, I really don't get all giddy with excitement that the place has been overrun with people that will likely disappearin a few weeks, never to be seen again. And I really don't understand why that concept is so hard for someone to grasp.

. But after 30 minutes I do the only appropriate thing and switch to a new machine. Staying on one machine for more than 30 minutes is wrong, especially during peak hours when others are waiting.
I disagree. If I want to run, non-stop, for 60 minutes, I should be allowed to. It use to annoy me to no end how my old gym would limit the time on the machines via programming.
 During the winters, I pretty much have to do my weekly long run on a treadmill. If that means that I'm tying up a machine for 90 minutes, tough. (In my case it doesn't really matter since we have plenty of machines and there's seldom a wait, but I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be able to do my normal routine).

I would like to go to the gym. I just can't get my ### moving in that direction. Just putting it out there.

So a free service is offered to all of your fellow employees, yet you don't want them to take advantage of it. I'm sorry, but you are coming across in this thread as whiny and childish.

Inconvenienced.Man, I thought you people were supposed to be jolly...

What the hell ever happened to tying on some running shoes and taking off around the neighborhood? I never understood why anyone would run on a treadmill, at least if the weather won't kill you.

It was about 19 degrees here in Atlanta this morning, with near 0 wind chill. I ain't running in that.

That I understand. But if it's above freezing, why not run outside? A TV in front of a treadmill has to be one of the worst ideas ever.

Thats the 10 buck a month one I joined. Always empty, only has dumbbells for weights though, but its has a bunch of smith machines and flat benches so I make do.Plus it's clean, no random sweat or pools of water anywhere.

I agree.

I've been going to the gym for over 20 years.

Yes it's true that the beginning of January is very crowded.

But you know it's temporary so you just adjust your gym schedule for a few weeks to a less busy time, like avoiding the 5:30 after work crowd.

Then when the crowd dwindles, you go back to your normal time.

It's not that big a deal.

We ran in Decatur at 5:30 this morning... an inner and outer layer of Cold Gear and I was all nice and toasty. It's great for outdoor activities in cold weather, I own about 5 Cold Gear turtlenecks.

Oof. You're a braver man than I.

The main reason is this. I can run end of the workday, leaving an hour early under the aformentioned fitness policy. I leave the gym and go pick up the wife, who I carpool with. We then head home. Easy, convenient and, normally, a nearly empty gym since it's 2:45 in the afternoon. Hopefully, as kids are now back in school and military are back at work, 2:45 will clear out some. Tomorrow will be the true test.

I live in San Antonio now so admittedly own no cold weather gear. It was 30 this morning. Not going to happen. Come spring? Heck yea, outside is definitely an option. Then summer hits with our 60 consecutive days over 100 degrees and it's back inside.

You're going to have to unwrap this one for me. What does waiting in line at the gym for a bunch of three week wonders have to do with being service oriented at work?

Retired. I deployed 7 times between 9/11 and the end of 2004. You?
Wow. You really are quite a peacock, aren't you?
He made an assumption. I provided a fact. Not sure how that's peacocking, but whatever.
The only fact you needed to answer him was "retired". The rest was peacocking, unless you were whining about being deployed 7 times.

Really? Saying retired would have addressed his "God help us if you ever get deployed" comment? You're trying to hard dude. That's a stretch by any means.

I like running outside. But I also like running on a treadmill, where I can control my speed, easily have water available, watch the game, and change my mind about how far I want to run whenever I want, and I don't have to worry about bugs or running out of daylight. I don't like running outside in the winter, even if it's fairly nice out, because you usually have melting snow getting your shoes wet, which gets salt and mud all over your gym clothes. If I'm going for a short run, I might run to the gym, work out, and run back, or run on the treadmill at the gym. When I've trained for 5ks or a half marathon, I ran outside a lot more often. But otherwise, treadmill running is a big part of my routine. My wife (who runs full marathons) and I have one at home and we use it all the time.

 Even when it's nice outside, I still run on a treadmill once or twice per week. I'd prefer to do my long runs outside, and I strongly prefer to do speedwork outside on a proper track, but if we're talking about an easy base-milage run, a treadmill is completely fine and adds some variety to the week.

As someone who generally goes to the gym fairly often year-round, the bigger crowds this time of year don't bother me, although I always chuckle at how many Resolutionists show up right around the new year, every year, on cue. Most of them give up in a matter of weeks when they realize that it is actually hard work.

Well, the whole idea of being service minded includes making other people's needs a priority. That's pretty much what service is. Your attitude toward the other folks in the gym is the exact opposite of service.

I'll take them over the geezers who come in regularly because they can sense the Grim Reaper is pulling up their file, and take forever using a machine, straining to do a light set of reps only to then sit there doing nothing for like 10 minutes while they try not to pass out. Then when you ask if they're going to be much longer they snort out some line about being a few more minutes while they glare at you. Or the schmucks who think the 30 min rule on a cardio machine applies to everyone else but not them.Nah, you usually get a few nice cougars trying to tighten up a bit, or some college chicks sweating the freshman 15 and worried about bikini season, during the resolution influx. Nothing wrong with that.
 I'll also take them over the androtwins who come in pairs, then (because there's two of them) set up on the bench (it's always the bench) for ten times as long. And all the while they discuss protein loading, flex for each other, and yell motivational "C'mon's" Ugh.
Had a set of androtwins this morning on the friggin' machines! Seriously WTF? One guy on the machine, the other just standing there doing nothing. I can almost see working as a pair on the bench so one can spot the other (though I'm with you, it's annoying) but on a nautilus machine? It's like they're pansies afraid to work out alone or something. And of course they took forever doing as many reps as some magazine article told them to do. :hophead:

So when I go to the grocery store, I should start bagging other people's groceries for them too? Seriously, WTF dude? You are off on some wild tangent here.

Ah, the ol' "He called me out on the fact I wasn't making sense and owned me, so now I'll try and distract him with insults" ploy. Well played.

You can make the claim all you want. Post it a thousand times if you like. It won't make it any more the truth than the first time you or he posted it. At some point though, it would be nice if you'd actually contribute something, anything, to the thread that addressed the whole point of the OP rather than just trolling.

And vice versa. No matter how many times you post this trash it won't make it true. See, I can say it, too.

What I don't get is that this happens EVERY year.........not just this year. All of you 'gym rats' know that it is going to get packed with the January resolution crowd every January.......so it's just poor planning on your part.

Why not take a 2-week break from the gym to let your system recover, or set up a home-gym routine for the 2 weeks?
