I hate the gym in January (2 Viewers)

Ok GymGuys...I want to get a membership this year, is this the best time to do it as far as price goes (i.e. New Years specials)? I actually don't want to deal with the crowds, and don't want to be one of "those guys", so even if I get the membership now, I probably won't use it for a little while, or it'll be later at night after work (like 8-9pm). But I need to start doing something, and financials are such that it is now an affordable expense this year. Looking at the nearby Anytime Fitness due to the time flexibility and that there is one just down the road from me.
i used to train at a gym, but haven't in a couple years. Work with clients outdoors or at their house now. When I used to work there the time to get a membership ended when the gym closed today. Won't see any good specials again until they start analyzing first quarter numbers. Then the time to get in is at the end of the month. Best advice, try to get a month to month deal that you can get out of easily if something better pops up. Ending your gym membership can be. Royal pain in the ### though. SAVE YOUR PAPERWORK

You are only one of those guys when it becomes obvious you aren't there to use the equipment properly and take forever because you are so busy texting or checking yourself out. You can still be one of those guys if you go every day for ten years.

I'll be there with a vengeance. I've been there for 6 months now, but come January, I'm dialing in a serious diet, and I'll be there pushing weight with more anger than ever FU 2015, you're my girl dog.

Thanks, I knew I should have swung by while I was out today, but for some reason I was figuring there would be a bunch of deals to get folks to join one gym over another.

####### :X

I use an elliptical machine (it's just a slight variation from a normal one and there are only two of them) and I couldn't even get on it. Every time I tried there was some fat ####### schlep who might as well take a nice slow stroll around the block on the thing.

The jeans crowd was there, the place was overcrowded, and moron after moron taking their annual tour of the gym. ####face, it's the same thing it was when you toured last Jan and left last Feb.

Please wear a 1980's Venice beach style skinny tank top with nipples, maybe with like a Golds Gym logo on it.

Was at the gym this morning before work, hardly anyone there! :pickle:

The resolution crowd must be counting the new year as starting on the 5th.

To be fair, those guys do have their own special type of progression.

  1. Roll into the gym and spend time farting around on each type of elliptical, bike, and treadmill. Sweat everywhere and never clean up.
  2. Get the Nautilus tour. Do the exercises with as much weight as possible while having a near-zero range of motion
  3. A pro is born. It's time to take up more than one machine at a time while waiting 5 minutes between sets.
  4. Graduate to free weights, which means 10 minutes of texting/posing between sets.
  5. Set up at the bench press for 45 minutes, a solid scream for each rep so everyone knows what's what. Make sure to arch that back!
  6. Do curls, making sure get a whole-body swing going to let momentum help complete each rep. NEVER do legs.
  7. Disappear for 6-12 months after a, "Rotator cuff injury playing b-ball."
  8. Go to step 1.

Ok, I know what not to do. Having never been a GymGuyTM, what do I need to know, what should I take with me into the gym area and what should I do before going in? I'm pretty much a complete noob, I know the basics of various exercises, although I'm planning to sit down and find a decent set that I should do. Right now, the goal for the first 2 months is to get comfortable, know what I'm doing, not feel lost whenever I go into a gym, and establish a repeatable pattern that works for me.

Went today and the basketball court was full blast, 10+ people waiting which is unusual for my gym.

Didn't bug me because I was lighting it up, never had to leave the court!

gym bagChange of shoes

Shower shoes

Shampoo/soap

Towel

Headphones/phone for music (strap for your arm or just put phone in pocket)

Lock

Small cheat sheet listing exercises that day, crumpled up piece of paper in your pocket...just exercise names, if you can't remember what it is go back and memorize it again then do it next time. Write down more exercises than you will do. That way if you are unable to do an exercise because the equipment is not available you can do something else instead of waste time waiting for god knows how long.

Only do one exercise at a time. Don't take more than 30-45 seconds between sets. 3 sets per exercise. Somewhere between 10 and 15 reps per set.

Wipe down equipment after exercise before starting next one.

Since you're a noob you should be tired at the end of the third set, but not exhausted. More likely to cause an injury.

If something hurts don't ignore it, it will get worse, diagnose the problem.

Lastly, the first time at the gym is not the hardest. The second and third times are. You're going to be sore. When you're sore do the exercises just at a lower weight. This is normal. Have to do it though.

The same ##### has been running on the TM next to me and holding onto the rails for dear life for the last 10 years. She's still a noob to me.

Thanks! Do you generally carry a smaller towel for wiping down equipment (I know I'll sweat)?

no, then you're just carrying your sweat from equipment to equipment. Should be plenty of spray bottles and paper towels throughout the gym. Identify where they are when you're first walking through.

Highly recommend noobs to at least look at

Stronglifts 5x5 - There are very good apps for phone that will take you step by step through your workouts.

Or

Starting Strength - Great simple exercise set list. Perfect for noobs, probably my favorite.

Or

New Rules Of Lifting - Book which has many different routines and programs. Not exactly for noobs, but you can certainly do it as a noob.

Find one of those which seems the most useful to you, doesn't really matter which, and do it for 12 weeks, and either stay with it or change to something else.

usually recommend noobs over prepare then figure out your routine later. I don't take anything besides my headphones/phone.

Don't forget your belt to attach plates to while you do chin ups/dips. Lol forgot where I am never mind.

Plenty of naked old dudes to go round this time of year. Avoid touching the sink or locker room benches for the next two months.

Careful when waiting on a stall. Naked guys with their cranks dangling have been known to burst forth from within.

:goodposting: This is my first New Year in "my" gym (joined in August) and those not wiping down the equipment is frustrating. You can see regulars over emphasizing wipe downs to try and set an example. The amount of people ####ing around in the pool is annoying too; with the old lady perfume slick at a all time high :X

Never ever use the blow dryer. Old dudes think they are fancy newfangled junk dryers. Reminds me of Beverly Hillbillies marveling over the pot-passing sticks.

Unfortunatley I walked into the sink area at the wrong time and can testify to this one :X

Same here. Old man had his foot planted up on the sink counter.

Parking lot was FULL this morning, but the cardio and weight areas were at normal capacity. There were 2 classes going on that were both packed. Hopefully this trend continues.

Will the guys hanging their #### to dry by the sauna heater go away in a while too, or is this a thing now. Originally, I would see it once in a while, but it is starting to look like a clothes line on most days.

Went yesterday and today... As crowded as I've ever seen this gym the last two days.

Next weekend I'm going at 7am both days, this Jan crowd def doesn't wake up early and go to the gym.

I recently started going to the gym before work and I'll never look back. No crowd, get it out of the way early so you can relax after work, and it gets me going for the day. Not sure how I ever went to the gym in the evening now that I look back on it.

My MILF wife is joininf the gym in January. I'm staying away so that I don't get associated with all the things she's going to do wrong there over the next month before she quits it.

What's her name and location? I'll show her my rope...I mean the ropes.

Standing in line at the nutrition store to buy protein and the line is the longest I've ever seen it. Lady in front of me buying some juice cleanse crap, some kids buying protein and jack3d pwo, and a bunch of other crap.

Not complaining, just stating things that I'm seeing.

HOLY #### was the gym packed this afternoon.

Lots there who should be working out, but just watching them you can see the fear in their eyes.

If they are serious, they need to get over the fear and just do it.
